PLAKE'S Bulletin, a Texas paper, undertakes to prove that labor is honorable.— The South is learning the true gospel of republicanism.

THE New York

SENATOR

Times says: "We hear

that horses are now seized with a disease that makes short work with them, and puzzles the skill of the best veterinary surgeons. Within a few days several valuable animals belonging to a gentleman in this city have succumbed to the disease, which is so rapid in its effects that, tbe suffering horse never survives the first 8}mptoma of the malady more than twenty-four hours. The trouble in its general character is not unlike that which played such havoc among the Tex an beeves."

FROM a special dispatch to the Cincrncinnati Chronicle, we learn that the ques tion of the location of the Ohio Agricultural College has practically been settled At a meeting of the Legislative Commit tee, seven out of eleven voted in favor of Urbana, and a bill will be prepared to earry out that decision. We regard this as fortunate for the interests at stake, as (without reflection on the othei excellent places recommended) the soil of Champaign county, representing that found in sixty out of tbe eighty-eight counties of the State, is best adapted for experimental farming. Then, as a railroad centre it is unsurpassed.

STEWART, of Nevada, argues

that the first clause ot the Chicago platform, which pledges the Republican party against national interference with the right of suffrage in tbe loyal States, is not inconsistent with the proposed constitutional amendment on that subject.— The matter is to be submitted to a vote of the States, and tbe people cf each will have a voice, he says, in deciding the question, when voting for members of the Legislature.

It is not easy to see how a State, our own for instance, which should elect a Legislature that would vote against the amendment, would be left entirely free to regulate this question in its own way, it the amendment should happen to be ratified by the required constitutional majority. But Mr. STEWART is no doubt ingenious enough to mako that point clear, if he will only make the effort. We hope he will.

SOUTHERN

journalism has always smelt

as sweet a9 its chivalry—which is no ex-» travagant flattery. The Memphis Avalanche has hitherto contended with the LaCross Democrat for the cloacan preeminence of being a ''Democratic organ." Tho Frankfort (Ky.) Yeoman thus competes, in adverting to a Chicago paragraph "It is the coward, the poltroon, the assassin, the whining cur, the grovelling reptile, the slimy pismire, the dirty, lying, mendacious, snarling creature, mis-called man, who would insult the prisoner after surrender, would spit in his face and rob his pockets would endeavor to excite the mob to outrage him and would heap all manner of outrages upon him—always, however, making sure that either power or distance renders such course entirely safe. The Chicago whelp which snaps and snarls at the image of reckon ridge when thousands of miles away, would whine and crawl and lick his very feet if he should turn up in Chicago. And so of the whole pack."

Pergonal and Political.

BISHOP CLARKE, one of the ablest divines of the Episcopal Church, is deliv ering lectures to the convicts in the Bhode Island Penitentiary—an example worthy of imitation.

America for his health. If popular sentiment here wero as healthy as it ought to be, he would have to stay away from North America, for his health.

THE Cuba revolutionists have gained a great point in the capture of Puerto Principe, a city of the interior second only to Havana in population, forty-five miles distant from the port of Nuevitgs, with which it has railroad communication. The insurgents thus secure their possession of nearly or quite all of the eastern half of the island, and are Bteadily advancing westward. DULCB finds his volunteers a poor reliance, and he is short of regular troops.

THE Cleveland

Herald says: "General

Stager,^Superintendent of the Western Union Telegraph, leaves in a few days for Chicago, tbe headquarters of the line having been removed to that point. We regret the removal of Gen. Stager, with whom so large a number of our citizens have had pleasant business and social relations, but aB the telegraph annihilates space and time we shall continue to claim him as a Clevelander, though bis name may be on a Chicago doqr-plate."

PERSONALLY,

there is no ground of ob

jection to the admission of Senator Hill, of Georgia. He maintained his integrity as an unscrupulous Union man throughout the war. His right to a seat is made to turn altogether on the question whether the Legislature that elected him was legally organized, and the State of Georgia restored to its Federal relations by compliance with the terms of the Reconstruction acts. The House determined this matter affirmatively, long since, by admitting Representatives from Georgia to seats in that body. Tbe two branches are thus at variance with each other, and it seems a little unfortunate that while Representatives of rebel antecedents and Saymour-Blair politics readily got io, a staunch Union man and Republican, like Mr. Hill, should be kept out. The usual attitude of the House and tbe Senate are exactly the reverse in this case, the more conservative body having become the more radical.

IT is said that General Grant will ngt inform the country, nor even the gentlemen themselvos, whom he has selected for his cabinet till ..fie ifafeady to install them. The country can easily stand it but how about the gentlemen Can the persons who are expecting to be Secretary of State, of the Treasury, Navy, and so forth—can they endure this suspense 1 There are probaby «even dozen statesmen in each State of the Union who are confident that the government is languishing for their services, and that Grant must appoint each and every one of them in his cabinet, or else the Republic will go to rack. Will any of these men be .'cr.Tr-. ri-n struck by the lightning 7^-

A GOOD actor appreciates the capabilities of little parts. He seizes their microscopic excellences, and very often terns his small chances to greater account than the leading impersonations. Edwin Booth inherits this knowledge from his father, wbo, once, in the zenith of his fame, played tbe Second Grave Digger in Hamlet, in a London theater, making the character almost the center of interest. Jtiis son has engaged amateurs to take the part of the supernumeraries, trusting to their ambition to ex?ell for endurable assistance. The experiment will, we believe, succeed, as it must undoubtedly add greatly to the ensemble of the plays.

THE Democratic journals are generally, if not universally, opposed to Ashley's bill for the dissection cf Utah. The St. Louis Republican and the New York World, have bitter articles against it a8 an outrage on religious liberty and an insult to one of tbe sacred institutions of Holy Writ. The "twin relic" which the lebellion destroyed was equally precious in the Democratic eyes. The World's argument is, and it is the general argument of its party, that the government has no right to concern itself with the morals of tbo people, or, in the World's language, "to run the moral machine of the country." In other words, if a man wishes a hundred and fifty wives—and why not if a woman a hundred and fifty husbands ?—legislation has no business with him further than to protect him and secure him in tbe possession of bis females. a v.: '-i' './!

hk Indianapolis Journal makes a very fervid and pathetio appeal for "justice" towards Mrs.

LINCOLN,

which jus

tice is to take the shape of a pension.— We do not believe that "justice" requires the Government to do any more for Mrs. LINCOLN than it does for .the widows of soldiers who lost their lives in the mili* tary or naval service during the late warIt is well known that Mrs.

LINCOLN

took

fropi the Government, without permissio| or authority, property equal in value to a the amount of soldier's widow's pension for many years. People who de mand justice should practice it. tt is not our purpose to say an unkind word of that unfortunate woman. We wUh her health, prosperity and discretion. But if the Government is ready to go into the pension business fairly—which it never has—we are prepared to give the natnes of hundreds of women whoso claims for material aid are quite as well founded as are those of Mrs. L., and whose story is as pathetic as that which the Journal tells of her

The truth is, the whole system of pensions is conducted on false principles The widow SMITH, whose husband was a barroom loafer till gubernatorial partiality or even less honorable influences put an eagle on his shoulder, draws $30 pej month. The widow JONES, wboBe huiband left an honorable and lucrative pr4fession or trade and went into the ser 1 vice and met death as a private soldier, impelled only by love of country, this wi&ow draws, tho munificent sum of $8 per month 1 The whole thing is fraught with wrong and outrage, disgraceful to the Government that directs and the people Who tolerate it.

We are willing that Mrs. LINCOLN should have as high a pension as the widow of the noblest private ur officer w|o died on the field of battle. By existing laws that cannot be less than $96, nqr more than $360 per year. Will the Journal be good enough to tell us why she should have more?

Vice and Immorality-

Mr. James who was for many year the Curator of the Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, represented that city in the Legislature of Pennsyl vania during several sessions, about forty five years ago. On one occasion a coun try member presented a petition for a lot tery. Mr. moved that the petition should be referred to the Committee on Vice and Immorality. The member who had presented the petition got up in great vrrath and exclaimed: "Mr. Speaker, do you and tbe members of this houje know ho# the member from this city gets hia living? He shows naked images to ladies and gentlemen for a quarter.dollar bead. He's a pretty fellow to talk to us about vice and immorality!"—Lippincott's Magazine.

Walking in the Old World The increasing passion for walkingmatches has extended to the Old Worli and brought a number of Becass—runners of the nomadic tribes of Central Africa —to Paris. They far surpass anything dona by our race. When they carry gov eminent despatches, they run for days without sleep. In order to keep the chest free, they seize with both hands the ends of a stick, which they place horizontally behind their neck. Their stock of provisions consists of a flaw dozen dates, and their whole costume of a pair of trousers perhaps they also carry a pair of aandala, which they put on when the sand of the deselrt becomes too hot to bear. On the way they lose as little time as possible. When they are out of breath, they stop, count up to sixty inspirations, and continue the journey they sleep only two Or three hourB out of the twenty-four and in order not to oversleep themselves, they tie a rope of date-bark to one foot and set it on fire. They know exactly how long it will bum, and when it reaches the foot the pain makes them jump up, and off they go once more on their errand
