CITY NEWS,

DAN SHELBY'S MINSTRELS played* to another good house last evening. Tboy go next to Vincennes.

A COTTPLE

of lady contributors discuss

"hired help" and "woman's rights" in our columns this morning.

THK Indianapolis Furnace Companjj at Brazil, have just "blown in," with great success, and are making a first-rate quality of iron.

ICE—Not more than half enough jce to supply the city next summer has %VJ~IW „Tn stored, and the prospect of a further s^-t^irut.es ascribed, the wages are ply is not .favorable.

THE ODD FELLOWS of this city are making extensive preparations for attending at Indianapolis the celebration of fiftieth anniversary of the foundiogof that order.

THE New England Society has had printed in a very neat pamphlet the address on the religious history and character of the Puritans, delivered on the evening of the 20th December last.

TEBPSICHOBEAN.—Lovers of the danbe will observe the announcement of the Grand Masquerade Ball to be given $y the Msennerchor of this city. It is looked forward to as an event of unusual brilliance and pleasure.

ASH, at the Post Office lobby, has received Phunny Phellow, Chimney Corner and New York Ledger for January 6th. Ash is now receiving regularly tie Boston Pilot, Freeman's Journal. Iriih American and The Btnereld. a

IN the Senate on Tuesday, Senator Scott's bill creating the twenty-third Judicial Circuit,

REGISTRATION,

The Boards of Regis* tie' poM ff

tration meet next Monday, under provisions of the law, for tbe pur

making a new registration of the votitfg population. The Boards in this township will hold their sessions at the places where the last general election was help.

THE ECLIPSE.—Like the spirits Pence's Hall, a clear atmosphere is nepessary for a successful exhibition, and ftr a while last evening we thought should miss the semi-veiling of Lun^'i face, but as the sun went down the clouds cleared away, and the eclipse occurred precisely as the astronomers had recorded. 1

CONFIDENCE GAME.—We learn fr the St. Louis Republican that few since a farmer from the vicinity of tAis city on arriving a,t the depot in East St Louis fell in with a nice young man, wlj said that he was a junior member of a respectable firm in Terre Hauts, and on his way to St. Louis to sell some chandise, which was consigned to the elevator. The farmer felt pleased with l)is new acquaintance, and the usual civilitfcs were exchanged and a visit was paid the saloons at Dyke avenue. When fidsnce was secured, a freight agent ca forward to collect a bill of $30, wfiich w^e due on freight. The would-be owner, h|i no money just then, but asked his friend to let him have $30 on a check, he returned from the elevator, money was cheerfully advanced, and tfte result may be anticipated. Freight agi and consigner then disappeared. W^o Is the farmer?

MUSICAL.—Mr. L. Kisaner is klfeaay preparing for the Spring trade, and Is filling-his Palace of Music with all tit variety of tho best ftiusical instrument Yesterday ho opened three new pianos and one of Cgrhart & Needham's Organp, of a new style called the "Lit^e CTem." particular attention to the

report of the condition of the State Nc*• mal School building at Terre Haute. It seems that the Legislature left the Boartl of Directors without funds sufficient to enclose the building and protect it frofi tho weather. To enable the Board to Jo this, a loan was asked of Mr. Chauncefr Rose, of Terre Haute, who responded br giving them a oheck for $20,000. This amount saved the building, and when consider the importance of tbe loan mai "by Mr. Rose, the citizens of Indiana a certainly place! under more than ordin ry gratitude to him ior his prompt actii in this matter. But this is not the only act of Mr. Rose, which deserves honorable mention—monuments of his kindness tf heart stand along the pathway of his life,in almost eonntless numbers, teaching mankind that there lives one whose goodness of haart,-honeet and integrity have nqt been corrupted by the possession of wealth. Suoh mett deserve the blessings of mankind, and we suggest that a full size# likeness of Mr. Rose be procured anil placed in the Normal Institute, as a tokep of regard for the benefactor of Terip Haute.—Sullivan Vnieru- i: n.- "».HV

READ THIS.—Professor Andrews, of New York, the celebrated Mathematician, who is so well known throughout the country as a teacher of his new, short, exceedingly rapid, and practical mercantile course,' consisting of interest^ per* centage, and short multiplication of plain and fractional numbers, Ac., and wbo is having fine luccbsa in ofgj»niz(Bg a class of our citizens, is highly recommended by hundreds of the fli^t citizens of-Chi-cago, and other cities. feited, dismissal follow^-with -a loss ,of character, making it very difficult fbr tho individual to provide herself with another home. The plan works well, in suring comfort and Tespect to all. Our ladies, unfortnuately, (in many cases) lend themselves as instruments in the hands of their servants by a mistaken sentiment of ignorance of domestic knowledge will quote a few remarks from Mrs Beecher's excellent work on "Domestic Economy," they being so exactly apropos "It is often the case that young ladies pride themselves on their ignorance of these subjects, and seem to imagine that it is vulgar and ungenteel to know how to work. In fast ages, and in aristocratic countries, leisure and indolence, and frivolous pursuits have been deemed ladylike and refined, because those classes which wore most refined countenanced such an opinion. It may be urged, however that it is impossible for a woman who dow hf^se-wotk^to acquire? the habits and manners of a lady. It Is because such work has generally been done by vulgar people, and in a vulgar way, tlhfet Ve have such associations, ini when ladies manage such things, as ladies should, then such associations will be re moved. Thera-are pursuits deemed very refined and genteel which involve quite as much exposure as kitchen employment. For example, to draw a large landscape in cdoted ccayfcrfs, would be deemed very lady-like but the writer can testiiy from experience that no cooking, washing, sweeping, or any other ^domestic duty ever left such deplorable'traces on hands, face and dresses this sane lady-like pursuit. Such things depend entirely on custom an $ M8ociations, and every American woman who values the institutions of her country and ,wishes to lend her influence in extending and perpetuating blessings may.feel that she is doing this whenever, by her' example and influence she destroys the aristocratic association which would render domestic labor degrading."

The indulgence of meok mistresses who, for the sake of retaining their "girl,? give her the] privilege of using a "night key" do a very wrong thing. A lady ought to feel it her duty to know that her servant girl is safely^used at the time for retiring.

The owners of the premisos are the only ones who should exercise the privileges of iogrea sod egress at all hours.

Many a foolish girl has lost her right sense of propriety and virtue by having this privilege allowed her. S.

A change in regard to these matters, it seems to me, must soon occur, and ttie sooner the better, for all parties. There has been much said and written in regard to the rights of servants—should be respected, &c., &c. The rights of the employer have been overlooked, and the management given into the hands of the domestics, and until the ladies enter into some systematic and uniform arrangement, we are msdo liable to all sorts of 'impositions and afc-eorts ot discomforts

Let us have a change! S. S.
