CITY NEWS.

Thb cost of stone crossings on Main street is sixty-five dollars.

Ash, at the Post Office Lobby, has Putnam's Magazine for Februry, a number quite equal to any of its predecessors.

Pebsonal.—A. T. Lansing, editor of the Bowling Green Aurora, is in the city negotiating for a velocipedo.

Criminal Court.—On Tuosday HonH. D. Scott introduced in the Senate a bill providing for a Criminal Court in this county, and also providing for the election of a Judge thereof.

Nicholson.—By reference to the proceedings of the City Council it will be seen that that body decides adversely to laying of a Nicholson pavement on Main street and also in regard to stone crossings on Main street. I

We invite attention ,to the card of Mr. A. H. Dooley, successor to M. "W O'Connell, in the book and periodical trade. Mr. Dooley has recently come to our city, [and impresses up as a clever gentleman and a clever dealer.

Senatorial Votk.—On the first ballot taken in the State Senate on Tuesday, HD. Scott, in obedience t3 instructions received from his constituents, voted for Hon. B. W. Thompson. In the House Mr. Pierce did the same, while Mr. Ham* ilton cast hi9 vote for "Will Cumback.

Minstrkls Coming.—Major Edwards called in last evening to announce the coming of Dan Shelby's Minstrels with fourteen first class performers—a full minstrel troupe and brass band. Extracts from the press in cities where the, the company has recently played give evidence of superior excellence.

A brilliant Aurora Borealis spanned the northern heavens yesterday morning between five and six o'clock. Appearing at such an unreasonable hour—for editors of morning paper—wo missed the exhibition and cannot give a description It is one of the institutions that does not advertise, and consequently the audienoe was not so large as it would have been had there been a previous announcement. The favored few who saw it, represent it as a grandly beautiful sight.

Velocipede.—Wildy, Thomas carriage builders, corner of Walnut and Second streets, have completed the first velocipede built in thisjcity. Yesterday evening several gentlemen gave it a trial —causing a vast deal of amusement lo bystanders, but with no very flattering results. The thing ran so oasy that mounted it with confidence that we could go right off the first time. We did

matter.,. .: .jum Street Etiquette.—Probabiy in oity of the Union of the'sijeei li& the^e so lamentable a want of the^kiKmled^e or Ihe practice of street etiquette as in this city observation has led me to this conclusion, and a desire to call' attention h^s "dictated the writing of th4s article 'i

It is a cojnma* rule and one easy hi obseEv^nce, b6th with iAUclefe iand pe desttlans going in opposite dirajtiotis, when they meet, each should take the tight hand side in passing oofliuagjts ja more disagreeable, and to hysti more ludicrous'sight, (except losing" fen hat in a high breeee) than to meet peraon who takes the same, side of the Wfi|k a yotirtelf, and causing frequently |a dod^inf of both panties from one side to ?«he other, until one losing patience stub still and lets the other pate.

The writer of this article meta lady in ihe street a few days ago who attempted to take the left side the writer in Ukiog the'right, (no pan intended) of course wts the cause of bringing both to a Btand stil) both immediately moved in the other dU region with the same effect, to the inex-

Another breach of street etiquette is formation of crowds around the street ners. "Where there is nojlaw to prevent it, common regard for the comfort of walkers would indicate the impoliteness (mild term) of standing on tha street crossings, especially in muddy weather. The following from the c^ftfcittee on Streets was concurred in Tebre Haute, Jan. 18, 1868.

The committee to whom was referred the petition of sundry citizens, asking the improvement of Main street, by ,,the laying down of & 'Nicholson Prfvemeat, have considered the subject, and beg leave to report as follows

The committee believe that there is not sufficient unaqimity on 4he,paf^cf the. property holder! on avor of the prbpoaCd improvement, withou' Which general concutrance,it wo^liLbe unsafe to undeftake it, but, "whenever the citizens shall more generally unite in demanding the ^$jjroveig0nt, tftetf6$fci' will be prepared to second the petition of the citizens.

The pecuniary condition of the city, in regard to making the improvement at the street crbesiSgs, is isuch that it~frouW not be prudent to undertake an expendi* ture of from six .to s^ven thousand dollars at the present lime, as all crossings must be improved at the expense of the city Treasury.
