IT is well that Sue Murphy's claim has been pushed into that mausoleum of dead jobs—the Claims Committee. Personally, we regret that Miss Sue Murphy should lose her house and her seven thousand dollars. Uncle Sam would hardly miss the dollars, and Miss Murphy undoubtedly does miss the house. But when the multitude of such claims is considered, when it is remembered that if all the claims put in by men or women really loyal, were granted, the Treasury would be bankrupt, and when it is observed that every man or woman who has a claim pretends to be loyal, and that nobody on earth can ever settle the vexed question, it becomes perfectly clear that the Unitod States must go to protest or else send such claims as that of Miss Susan to the tomb of the Capulets. In her case, it seems, the pretence [sic] of loyalty was disputed. It is a very strange thing that no rebel ever lost the value of five dollars since the war began! They were all intensely loyal, the men who lost anything.

THE INDIANS have received a lesson from General Sheridan, that they will never forget. In him they have at last found a General whom they cannot hoodwink by false professions of friendship, and who will visit upon the children the offenses of the fathers until they cease entirely from their murders and outrages.--They cannot be hostile to-day and friendly and peaceable to-morrow. Hitherto they have been permitted to devastate at their own will and pleasure during the summer and fall, and when winter made the plains no longer desirable for their abode, they have at once become friendly again, been received into our forts, fed, clothed and protected, and at the coming of spring furnished with abundance of arms and ammunition, and again sent forth to repeat their murderous exploits. This is not Gen. Sheridans' style of fighting. He "forces them into canons" and starves them into submission, instead of feeding and protecting them through the months of cold and snow. The result is "unconditional surrender" on the part of the Indians, and probable quiet through out the frontier henceforth. Sheridan recognizes these murderous redskins as criminals to be punished, not as frieads to be petted and provided for. With his advent into the field the reign of Indian Bureaucracy is ended, and their scoun-

drelly friends are made to feel the heavy hand of war in earnest. Now let the

Nation's legislators do their duty, and extirpate the parent nest of those Indian agents—confederates, often, of the Indians themselves in crime—and wipe out the entire bureau at Washington. In a question of veracity between Sheridan and the Bureau, there is not a man who would regard tbe affidavits of the whole tribe of agents against the soldier's simple word. Congress has no excuse for not instantly abolishing the Indian Bureau.

STATEMENTS continue to be pnt afloat by one or two letter writers or pretended conversation-mongers at Washington to the effect that the new President even after he shall have been freed from the restraints of the Tenure of Office Law, will leave in undisturbed possession of their Federal positions those Democrats appointed by Andrew Johnson who have discharged their official functions faithful" ly. We are not in the new President's secrets. We are not even in confidential relations with the enviable Washburne, (he of Gelena,) but we have seen in our day a goodly number of incumbents of office come and go, and have even witnessed the rise and fall of several political parties and reasoning lrom the plain logic pf history, philosophy, and analogy, we affectionately advise all Democratic administrators of Federal offices not to lay the flattering unction to their souls that they will be permitted long to reap in the partisan field where others have sown. Let them ask themselvos how long, based upon such a policy, the Democratic party would have endured, and they can furnish a bettor answer to their own in terrogative hopes than any Washington peddler can furnish.

TBE ROGERS MURDER.

Mr.Rogers' Detailed Statement totals -Pastor, Rev- W. T. EnyarcL^

The Brooklyn

Union

of January 16th

publishes the following letter: x_•« To the Editor of the Union: DEAR SIK Your evening issue of Wednesday, the 13th,-oontains what purports to be a statement of the facts connected wigi tbe assault upon and billing of Ghas. MTBogers, in New York, on the morning of the 31st of December. Substantially the same statement appeared in a brief paragraph in the

Union

shortly after the

murder, and was subsequently mrtle in one or two of tho New York papers.— These statements were undoubtedly thought to be correct, and to have been gathered from a reliable source. Perhaps they were. They differ, however, quite materially from the relation of the circumstances made to me by Mr. Bogers himself on the day of the assault also by his wife, and other members of his family, to whom he had previously stated them.

It is only because injustice is done thprein to the character of Mr. Bogers, in leaving tbe impression upon the public mind, that he allowed himself to be drawn Into a quarrel with a ruffian, and thus lost his life, that I feel called upon to give the facts as I received them from his own lips. -All- who knew Mr. Rogers knew that he was not the man to bandy words with a rowdy, or to engage in a quarrel with any one, Tbe disposition and temper of the man were utterly averse to any such thing. His was too amiable and noble a character. Hence bis friends have been pained by the appearance of such statements.

Tbe account contained in your paper to which I allude, says "The history of tbe case is, that Charles M. Rogers, of 42 East Twelfth street, New York, was attacked by one of two men while cleaning the snow from his sidewalk on Thursday morning, Dec. 31. Some remarks insulting to Mr. Rogers were made, which he resented. Then blows followed, and a struggle, in which Mr. Rogers was stabbed in the abdomen.'

The facts are these: It was the duty of one of the bervants to sweep tbe basement hall aud front area every morning. On the morning ot the sad occurrence she was late. Mr. Rogers wont' up stairs to ascestain the cause of her delay. She complained of not feeling well. With his ohaiacteristic kindness of heart he told her to lie down for a while, and he wbuld see that her work was attended to. He thought he would do it himself. It was something he had nevor. dena before, and on this occason only to relieve his indisposed'servant. He had get as far as the top of the area steps. He was inside of his court yard and not upon tbe side-walk. His attention was first attracted by hear iDg some remark in which the words "old man" were used. The remark was not addressed to him. He looked up as one naturally would engaged in sweeping and saw two men walking slowly. One was taking, off his overcoat, which he gave to tbe other, who ran ucross the street with it. The movement, however singular, did not create any suspicioii in the mind of Mr Bogers. He heard the one from tbe opposite Bide say, "Don't Jim you had belter not." All this occupied but a moment or two. The other immediately made a dash at bim with a knife coming through the gate and in the yard. It would seem from this that murder as well as robbery was intended from the beginning.

This attack was made at his head, and the hat of the unfortunate man was cut in several places. Mr. Rogers naturally threw up his hand to ward off tbe blows. His assailant then quickly grappled him, and in the struggle that ensued, succeeded in obtaining possession of his pocket-book, which be thrust in tbe breast-pocket of hia flannel sack. Mr. Rogers became exhausted in the struggle^ and for a moment ceased bis resistance. It was then that the assassin cut his watch-guard and thrust the watch into the same breast* pocket. In the accoubt which you copy from the New York

Times,

No word was addressed to Mr. Roger* by his assailant. There wu, therefore, no quarrel previous to the assault. The attack was made in his court-yard, and without provocation.

This much I deem it necessary to say in justice to Mr. Sogers, whose memory is dear to me, for the sake of his afflicted family, and the large circle of friends who deeply lament his sad fate.

The rapidity with which PLANTATION BITTERS have become a household necessity throughout tbe civilised nation, is without a parallel in tbe history of tbe world. Over five million bottles were sold in twelve months, and the demand is daily increasing. Bich and poor, young and old, ladies, physicians and clergymen, find that it revives drooping spirits, lends strength to the system, vigor to the mind and is exhausted nature's great restorer. It is compounded .of the choicest roots and herbs, tue celebrated Calisaya or Peruvian Bark, etc., all preserved in pure St. Croix Rum. it is stated

that tbe massive chain attracted the eye of tbe assailant Mr. Rogers wore no massive chain. He had worn for years, and did on this occasion, a very plain hair chain, wth a small gold slide. It was by no means conspicuous. A massive gold chain would not have beon so easily cut This act seemed to fire Mr. Rogers anew, and he again seized hold of his assailant, hoping to detain him until assistance came, crying, with what little strength he had left "murder I" and "watch 1" It was then that the fatal wound was given.

The coat was torn from the murderer in his struggle to eeeape after the stabbing took place. Mr. Bogers kept the piece of garment in his band until he reached his parlor, and told those who
