BY REVERENCE
IN
NEW YORK."—Last
evening Mr. Wirt Sikes gave his lecture on the above subject as the first of the season in this city, for the benefit of the Young Men's Christian Association. The audience speedily discovered that Mr, Sikes possessed one great advantage over the majority of lecturers, in the fact that he had a story to tell—that he talked as if he had
something to say,
and not as if
he had to say something. And the story which he had to tell was one in which he himself, it was easy to see, was intensely interested this being so, it was almost impossible that he should fail to interest others. His earnestness and sincerity were so unmistakable, his zeal so genuine, that if he had been as indifferent reader as Horace Greeley himself, hii matter would have held an audience but he reads better than jjforace. His utterance is distinct his voice, though ligh^ penetrating and clear, and he has a very good talent for imitating the Irish brogue^ the Dutoh accent, and the slangy speech of the low-life rough who figured largel^ in his address.
The lecturer commenced by mentioning an incident which occurred on his first visit to the Five Points, when he was $ boy of fifteen or sixteen. A drunken woman expressed herself as ashamed to go home while "the sun was shinin'— after dark she could go home." This was^ so to speak, the lecturer's text. The incl dents and scenes which he painted weri chiefly "after dark" scenes, but the ideji was conveyed thst itr was the
at
well as physical darkness of New York which engaged our attention. He sai that those who argued that it was wron| to lay bare tho plague-spots of city lif^ so that the pure and virtuous might look upon them, were themselves, indirectly aiding the cause of wickedness. Crimp asks at our hands no greater favor than this—not to talk about it, not to writfe about it.
Mr. Sikes described the disguise which he assumed when he plunged into tha dark currents of the city's misery qt night He wore a costume of rags, "and as much dirt as he could stand," but we^t unarmed, save with the weapons n&turte had given him but he had never had tp resort to his fist, owing to the superior ugliness of his personal appearance.— [Laughter.] He proceeded to tak£ his audience with him, so to speak, in a toJr in critneland. He showed them a queer gambling-den known as "Monkey Hall conversed with tho thieves there gathered visited a thieves' ball in the Fiva Points took them to lodge in an underground cellar, where a row was kicked up, and lecturer and audience fled together. These scenes, though in the ma^i painfUl and frightful, were enlivened many laughable incidents and mirth-p voking comparisons.
Having entertained his audience for a|i
n.N-. :S
hour this style, Mr. Sikes came to the meat of his discourse, if we may call it so. With an earnestnees and pathoe, he argued for works of

It was a mighty army of souls, and of all the fields in which philanthropy did its work, there was absolutely none which appealed with such moving eloquence to the heart of man. Until this vast body of struggling girls found relief—until the hordes of vagabond boys in New York were provided with all the help they needed—he believed in his heart that it was

a stock of dry goods, for Messrs. Landen & Higgine, and sold them out for the firm at Salem, Washington county, at a salary of

Beturn ing to Flemingsburg, Ky., he waB engaged as a salesman and clerk in the dry goods house of Wallace & Triplet, for five years at a salary of $200 for the first year, and $300 per annum for the balance of the time. At the end of his five years, he found he had saved one thousand dol lars in cash, and he at once conceived the idea of commencing merchandizing on his own account. THE
LADIES
of Sullivan continue to
hold prayer meetings in the liquor saloons. The
thus describes a scene of fre
quent occurrence (n£hat town In front of a saloon stood some ten or twelve of the most accomplished ladies of Sullivan, each with an umbrella stretched to Bhield them from the cold rain, while one waB offering up a prayer for a temperance reformation in oijr midlt./ W(S believe that each saloon Had bean Vilued for the previous three days, and wherever permission was granted tho ladies went into the saloons and laid the Bible upon the bar and offered up their prayers.— This, oF coarse, has been the means of creating a great deal of excitement. Old men, young men and children looked on in amazement. Drunkards skulked down this alleys and went home—the saloons became almost entirely deserted, but ~few ventured a defense of them or the traffic in strong drinks.
LATER.—The citizens have held several meetings to determine the best mode to get hd of the saloons now in our town. Fifteen hundred dollars was set as the amount which would be given to the five saloons, if they would surrender their licenses, and take their stock out of the county, and pledge themselves never to go into the business again in the?town of Sullivan. We think this a pretty liberal offer, but do not think (he terms will be accepted. We understand the sum asked is $2,8(10 which, we consder equivalent to saying they will not surrender their license. Wo understand that one saloon, whioh would not invoioe $150, wants $900, others seem to be more reasonable, but what will be done in the premises we-cannot now tell.
