We derive our judiciary system'from England, and in that country, judges receive high salaries and their office is one of great dignity. The judges of the Queen's Bench get as large salaries as our Presidents, and no country ever produced greater or more upright and indi pendent judges than England. AB far back as the reign of the fourth Henry we are told that the Chief Justice com mitted "Prince Hal," the heir apparent to the crown, to prison for contempt of his court. We, hav^ febe material for the best judiciary in the world, but men can not be expected to act as judges for less than half what they can make by prae ticing their profession. We trust, therefore, that the Legislature will increase the salaries fifty per cent, at least.

Philadelphia Press truthfully says

that the curse ef.American politics is the triangular contest. It serves to unsettle parties and cramp convictions. Two men, equally matched, seldom have a fair field for the battle of position. When all their strength has been exerted, all their muscles held tense for a time, as the hour of decision draws on a third party makes his appearance to destroy the balance of power and create a panic by side-issues. Frequently such are successful, sometimes they are representative men but the question is, have they succeeded by exactly fair means? All mankind recognises the ring proverb, "Fair play and no gouging." A square stand-up fight is not enjoyed only in the ring. Who is the better man, morally, socially, intellectually matter of as much ourlonity to outsiders as of vital moment to those personally inter* ested. Where there has been a lengthen^ ed culmination of forces, a protracted counting of chances, opportunity for appeal and discussion, the choice of a constituency is their truest representative.-^* These thoughts are suggested by the hard fate ?rtrich oVer General Carl Schura In Missouri. He has fought his ground over nobly for Senatorship with Mr. Sanderson. They represent the Radical and Conservative tendencies of the State, and the question can only be settled Cairiy^tt»tthraplrTf-on» of them: A third candidate,- however, is upon lb# tapis. He may b«4»tter than either of the others, thing is eertain, he is bound to spoil a "fair fight." We wish th«m'ttU" saoc(9SB. .r-«t-:..,-.'. •. i.-.

Land Agent-

A book called "Realities of Irish Life,1 by W. Steafet Trench, lahd agent in Ireland, to the Marquis of Lansdowne,Mar quis Bath add Lori Digby, has just been published by Longman in London "From youth to manhood, andfrom man hood to the'verge of old age," says Mr, T.rencb, "it has been my lot to be surroun ded by a kind of poetic turbulence, and almost romantic violence, which

apparently about fifty years

of age, and his bald head lay uncovered on the ground. -JJo

was quite warm, but

Mr. Trench wished at once to ride off in pursuit of the murderer, but a more experienced friend assured him that the man was probably among those who were quietly looking on and that afterward proved to be the fact. A villain had been hired by a farmer on Mr. Hall's estate to kill him for five pounds, and a young man was selected to accompany him. The intending murderer followed his victim as he walked in the fields on that bright May morning, anct on. ^wo occasiona as he approached him to fire, Mr. Hall turned round and thwarted him. The rascal went back to his companion and declared, with an oath, that the affair was unlnqky, ahd he would not go on with it. The young man swore at him as a coward, took the pistol from him, and coolly went up to Mr. Hall and shot him dead. He then threw the pistol away, and stood quietiy with his hands in his pockets, mingling with the crowd who gathered round the body. His companion after ward turndd apprbfer, and the youth was cbnviotfed and hung. The following strange scene occurred oh the trial: "After the witness had detailed how he had bimaetf undertaken So be the mur derer and had twioe stolen behind Mr. Hall for tbe purpose pf shooting bim in the back, and bad only given up his design because he fancied it was 'unlucky,' the prisoner's counsel said: 'Then it

'I would,' replied the man, quite unappalled, and growing desperate. "The lawyer still continued to excite him: 'Yoti Would sboOt yotir father for money,I suppose 'I would I' exclaimed tbe man furious-

Mower may be found innocent of this scandalous charge. There were thousands of cases of sheer robbery under military authorl ty, but the character of Gen. Mower has been heretofore above suspicion. The lesson to be drawn from such cases is, that there

Mr. Trench has seen the Irish tenantry from the point of view pf the agent of Irish landlords has been-among the scenes of Tiojence which/orm sO'dark a chapter in the so cial history of Ireland, and takes us with him behind the scenes. His tales havo the additional attractions of being literal ly true.

Passing over the events of the author's youth when "O'OonnelVs police" as the Liberator's ragged escort were called, had nearly killed him for hot taking off

it, when almost immediately

a man came running

son's book store, in Pittsburg, and made the basis of the Mormon Bible. The Salt Lake editor thinks Orson gave them "clear" insight into the "dim" vista of the "almost forgotten past."

hat as tbe great man passed by, Mr. Trench brings us to 1840, the time when the Ribbon Conspiracy was at its height. His first experience of an agrarian out rage occurred in the May of that year. "On a beautiful. bright sunny day at noon,

I was riding with a friend to the sessions at Borrisokane. I heard a faint report at a little distance in the fields, as of a gun or'pistolv:bdt took ho notice

Is he dead?'Iasked. 'Stone dead!' was the man's reply, and

as

he said so I never shall forget the strange mixture,of horror and of triumph which pervaded his countenance. "Wo rode on rapidly down the lane, and just where we emerged upon a little grass lawn was the body of Mr. Hall. He

When the potato blight had passed, and emigration had .began to change tbe whole condition of the Irish agricultural classes, Mr. Trench, became agent to Lord Bath. lAe rents were £30,000 in •near, and ho begaa hy o&ring help to the insolvent to emigrate,

day but life is sweet" So there was nothing to do but to go and see him.— Accordingly, Mr. Troitsk rode over to his place alone. McKey, after a parlg, admitted him to the house, where he apa two pthers were distilling poteen.^ Aitff som&Ulk, Mr. Trench said, "And iof' McKey, you are the terror of the coun» try, and no one dares to take yoa Mc Key looked restless, and replied, "No one has taken me." He then went to a coa' which was hanging en thi wail, showed a large brass pistol from the pocket, then pullet saidr ^That's wS«: theooFf* «ith." It bad neither lock, nor barrel.

Mr. Trench slowly .raised his right hand and pointed ltis pistol fall at McKey face, who folded hU arms and stood calialy looking into his opponent's eyes.

Suddenly Mr. Trench Celt that McKey was merely acttng oh the defensive, and with a sudden impulse be threw the pistols on the table within McKay's reach and said: 'You scoundrel, you know you dare not hurt me I' "He looked at me steadily, and then sitting down gradually and quietly on the chair, without trusting himself to look at the pistols which lay loaded and cocked on the table before him, he put his hands to his head, leaned his arms on the table, and said in a low voice:

What do yoa want me to do, Bir 'To give me possession of your house and place at once, said I, 'and to come with me now into Carrickmacross.' 'I will, sir,' he replied. "He rose, put his iron finger into the place where the handle of the door should have been, and turned the bolt and walk ing up to the other men in the kitchen he said: 'Begone but of that till I give up the place. They stared at him, and were perfectly astounded. 'Begone, say I' be repeated, and lie pushed them out of the room. "The youtig woman tlfen came up to him. 'What is this, Joe?' she asked "'You must go,' said he kindly. 'Don: talk—leave the house.' "She went at once. He put out the fire by kicking it about the floor, took 'sod and twig' from tbe garden, and banded me legal possession of the hous.e and grounds 1 'And now,' I continued, 'come with me into Carrickmacross.' "He hesitated. 'Sir, I will follow you in, but don't ask me to go with you.' 'Why not?' I asked. "Because I always Bwore no man snould ever take me alive, and if I was seen to go in with you ttre people would say you had taken me prisoner.' 'I understand you,' said I 'can I trust you then to follow me "He seemed almost hurt at the ques' tion. '1 would not fail in my word for thousand pounds 1' 'I have not a doubt of it,' replied I and I mounted my horse and galloped into Carrickmacross. 'I told my head clerk and confiden tial man all that had happened. He could not believe his senses, and thought I had lost mine. 'Well,' I said, 'McKey will be here within an hour, or I have been dreaming alt the morning" 'He will never come,' was his reply* "As the hour approached, I confess became very irervous and anxious and at length, about the time I had stated, the clerk came into my inner room, looking somewhat pale, and said, 'McKey wants to see you in the office, sir.' "There he was, quiet, but firm as ever. I told bim to return to his home for tbe present, and that I would see him handsomely provided for in America. He left and said no more. "The sequel wassad enough. He never reached America. Hearing that he was very ill, I resolved to go and see him once more. I rode to the house and found poor Joe McKey lying on his bod, a corpse—the same stern mouth, the same noble forehead, but hollow and sunk* en cheeks. The young woman knelt beside him, weeping. "When did he die?' I asked 'This morning, sir,' she replied and her tears flowed fresh and fast. "'What did be die of? '"A decline, sin H« never got the better of that day. The people said you took him—which your honor well knows was a rank lie—and it broke his heart that they should say sol"

This victory over McKey so discouraged the Ribbonmen that they marked Mr. Trehch himself for murder. After the murder of Mr. Bateson, of Carrickfergus, be became aware, by tbe confes sions'Of the informer, how nearly he had esoBped on several occasions on which men had laid wait for bim on the road Meanwhile he was warned by a young woman that her sweet-heart, who had joined the Ribbonmen, was on for the next job. Inquiring what this meant, he found that the order for his own assassination had already gone fortb, and taat the men charged with the murderous task were waiting to execute it, and this young man-had. been named as the agent for the murder of the next man who should be marked but as a victim. Mr. Trench however sent the youth to America, and in a few months he came back quite an other man, and took his sweetheart with him as his wife.

Then they began to talk about the five years rent wing, and McKey took Mr. Trench into a roem where were two chairs and a table, and billhook hanging on the wall. McKey slammed the door, and Mt. Trench saw that it could only be opened with a key. Ho kept himself between McSey and the billhook, which McKey confessed was his defender, and tboy sit down with tbe table between them to discuss their grievances. Presently McKey ams excited, looked nervously at the billhook and rose, Mr. Trench rose tbd, and drew his pistols from his pocket, and as McKey drew himself op to hie full height, the two men stood confronting each other with the table between them
