Much interest has been exci&if in 'all parts of the country in relation to4he Maine Senatorship. This interest has arisen from the fact that ex-Vice President Hamlin is a candidate. The failure to nomiaato him with Mr. IiisrcoLH in 1864, and his resignation of the Boston Collectorship after Johnson's apostacy in 1866, have led to the hope that he would be returned to the Senate as at least a partial compensation. The vote in cau cus was very clo3e between Mr. Hamlin

During'the late warj 'many wett^riead persons, referring to the past, concluded that the rebellion would not be ended in very mahy4yeftrs. When old fashioned bank notes constituted our circulation,' tbe people often ^iad good reason to doubt the solvency of the institutions issuing them, and therefore, upon the slightest rumor, they desired to exchange the paper for gold and silver—not to use in legitimate transactions, but to secure themselves against ultimate loss. But In reference to greenbacks and-their equivalents, I venture the opinion, that there is not one per cent, of the entire population of tho United States, that have the slightest fear that they aria unsafe and' thay become worthless. On the contrary, 1 am quite sure the Impression is general, that we never had asaftr circuiatIob,-ai$d that it must appreciate at least with the growth and prosperity of the country. If the opportunity was offered with ample means to make it reliable, no one would exchange their green hacks for gold, for fear they might become worthless, but because they wanted the gold to vis in transactions requiring gold, or for the reason that gold as compared with paper, was held at a premium.
We have heard so much of gold gambling in New York, for soma years put, that we have come to regard the gentlemen of the "gold room" as the arbiters by whose decison the value of bullion was fixed from day to day. But such is notreallj-the -fc#—they. ©oly ^aawrto the music outside, Tbey gamble upon the real wants of the community, aad •their "occuf a'.ion would soon be gone" if the people ceased to xpant gold to wse, not merely to look at and this brings me to the gist of the matter. Ihe Great Financial Problem^
Editors Express:—Being profoundly impressed with the majgriitude and intri« cate natUM of the questions involved in the solution of our great financial problem, I am deeply sensible of the danger of hasty legislation, or action of any kind in regard to this matter.
It must bo admitted, that notwithstand-
ing our vast debt and the depreciation of
our circulating medium, we
enjoying ft very fair dogree of prosjirerity. and a wise-legislator, would be extremely careful to' the sugges^ion pfsmeasures calculated to disturb the presort condition of things, without the r*»aft must infalibly better our circumstances, We can well afford to take time, to investigate and discuss the Bubjects'-of' currehcy ^atid finances, until they are fully comprehended. That they are ntot at present, ia obvious enough from the fact, that clear headed men totally disagree, both as to the oause of the depreciation of our circulation, and the means necessary to ri»» store th6 public credit.

An objectun. hat been urged, #iw#ottie ftrcfl, fn TOtfc this "city and Louisville, that if the proposed road bas its southern terminus at Mitchell, Cincinnati, through special and reduced freight and passenger rates^on the Ohio and Mississippi road would, without contributing anything toward building the road, reap a large share of its advantages. If the terminus of the road was Bedford, this objection would be done away with. This is an important consideration, and one worthy of the special ataU»pUon of the people of New Albany.
We
the road ia Jxearr'Bedford thtf-dtliens of that town end .vicinity, (and very many of them are wealthy and enteiprking) would subscribe largely to its stock. If Bedford, is made itotemioaethe road would not run fot twelve or fifteen miles nea|- to atf para|iU witfc-nhe Lounyil^, New AWafty and Chicago road. -It would terBve Red«r, though, to tbe L., N. A. & G. rotid exdt&fa&i/i,- yrhich would certainly be..an advantage to this city and Louisville, as it would give them a monopoly the rich f^oUpnf of ^c^ntry the road would penelrato.
Personally We regard Bedford as decidedly the preferable southern termtnosof the 'proposed road. But the question is one tor the .citizens of Jfew Albany to consider for themselves 'and in order that they may have all the information nec essary to lead them to a proper conclusion, we hope they will attend the railroad meeting at the Coohcil Chamber tonight and:h«ir *haf' the dele&aies from Bed for 3 may nave to say!

Tbe road from Bedford' to Mitchell, it ib contended, will'run for some eleven miles on a nearly parallel line with the New Albany road, and that, too, through a hilly tounlry, where the expense of making the road will be very heavy.— This expense can b# saved, as wetl as that' of a bridge over White: river, by making Bedford instead pf Mitchell the southern terminus of the road
It is true that freight and passengers intended for the Ohio and Mississippi road would require to be transported for the eleven miles between Bedford and Mitchell over the New Albany road, but
here would be no difficulty in this, as it confidently believed that a very
