The! vehicle of his son, Dr. Carles Abbett, wasj near, and the father and son jumped into' it endeavored to overtake the thief, but failed. It was learned, however, that the bold robber had gone east on the Na-' tional road, and two officers boarded the: Central train, and got off at Cumberland,: went up to the National road, and waited events. Events soon came along in the shape of the horse, buggy and thief, who were nabbed and returned to the city. The fellow gave his name as Reuben Lustin, and he is now in tbe county jail, awaiting transfer to Michigan City. The whole affair did not occupy four hours.

that, until within a recent date, the inmates of tbe Marion County Poor Asylum were fed, almost entirely upon salt mackerel and dried herrings, ahd were only served with vegetables at long intervale and were never permitted to indulge in such luxuries as milk or fresh meat of any description there was no nurse furnished for the sick, and none of the patients were ever washed, except their hands and faces, from one year's end to another, while others have been confined in small rooms chained to *he floor for months, and no one was permitted to see them. The consequences of this courae of life can readily be imagined.

The Mayor's inaugural message is a document of great length, reviewing in detail the work of all branches of th city government during the past year, and •peaking encouragingly of the material growth of the city.

The funded debt of the city on tbe 4th of January current, is over sixteen and a half millions. The unfunded debt nearly two and a half millions. Tbe means on hand for redemption exceed five millions, which leaves the net debt of the city &V 311,193. Increase during the municipal year of 1868 of the gross debt of $4,930,J10, and of the net debt of $3,308,681.

*A premature explosion occurred yesterday noon at the wreck of the steamer Scotland, off Sandy Hook, which resulted in the death of four men and severely wounding several others. The Neptune Submarine Company which made a contract with the Government last fall to remove the wreck of the Scot« land haVe been at work for several weeks whenever. the w.e&Uier would permit, in blowing the wreck to pieces. Theyj were about twenty men employed in this service under charge of Capt.

The diver went down and signalled to have one charge sorit down, which was done,,leaving one charge in the boat. BotH charges 'XVere connected by wire several hundnpd faet in length. Aftof placing tha chargoj. the diver came up and reported everything ready, when the boats began to pp 11 away, but had proceeded but half the usual distance when from some unexplained cause, the submerged explosion took place, followed almost instantaneously by the explosion of the reserved charge in tbe boat, blowing CaptainJQhurchiU and the men to atoms. It is. supposed tbe.charge in tbe boat was exploded try tlw cobcussiqn.

Several men in the diver's boat were seriously injured and have been sent to the hospital by the officers of the company.

The names of the killed are Captain Wm. L. Churchill, diver Louis Jurgins, seamen George Moore and James O. Shay.
