:td|r:farfiaiBr

Politically, '69 promises us many good things.' If it were not the inornhigj when, of all the year, we are bopnd t,o be on good terms with everybody, we should name as one of the best promises of llhe year, that of ridding the Presidential chair of .its present incumbent, .^s it,i8) we give the "powers that be/.' but are not long to be, our New Year's greeting,' and note as the best promise of the year that-of putting an honest man chair of State. We can not so far do'ia-i justioe to the old year as to forget that its months gave us the' hard work, and the glorious victory which makes it possible for its successor to put uS in full possession of so great a pleasure. _'J..'

Unless the new year b?. unthruthfuj, or we have misunderstood its promifees, it will also relieve us, as a nation, of much of the inefficiency, and dishonesty, and extravagance whiih prey^il in. oivil affairs at the present time, Wfe da not expect it to lift the terrible.load entirely off our shoulders, but.we do exp^t a mighty effort, and. npt^^MHe actually .accomplished. Then, too, remembering that the old year gave to the South abud-| ant harvests,"ank that its povfcrty^evlr aj source of discontent, has been thereby^ in a measuse, removed, and that it alaoj settled many of the questions whioh be^ fore were in doubt, aad being, in1 doubt^ were sources of discontent and bitter ri-j valries, resulting often in the shedding o( blood, remembering that the old yea^ did so much for them and us in these re| spectit the .new year must prove a, gr^»i blunderer if It does not give iu more o{ peace and quiet than any one of Its eight or ten predecessors- |n fact, the new year gives us many fair promises for national prosperity and happiness. If wfe might make a suggestion to our, young friend, it would be In favor of a judicioujs use of fire and brimstone lunong the "bulls" and "bears" of Wall street, or a discriminating earthquake along the

Erie B. including the office of the Company when the Board of Direotois should be in session. A little "special providence" this kind would ba a gre^t blessing to honest naen, and might pdt the rascals born of last year, under ia wholesome terror.

As a commuoity, the nev? year promise# us much. We catch not a hint th^t the fisvors which the former y^ars have shown us, are to be withdrawn, or in aniy degree, checked in their rapid^Jncjreasi Business and educational Interests leem about to be secured. Four or fivo new railroads, each ot which will be a direct source of growth and prosperity to our city, the year promises to see well under way. Our new library will be put on its legs, or rather its shelves, and, perhaps, our new Normal School building vilt be oMBpleted and occupied. Morally and religiously, our churches, will as heretofore, prove sources of strength and iipprovement, and will battle against the •Tils which strive to master and cura£ the individual and the community.

GRAND RAILROAD STRATEGY

(Fom the Indianapolis Journal) The enoTmous issue of Erie stock was a great sensation. Tha lease by the Erie of the five hundred miles of the Atlantic and Great Western was a lively indication of

reat speculations., The monstrous swinof the.K«w t'ork Central in watering its etook to the extent of twenty million ollars'is fresh in the minds of the people more especially in those who were short in Oentral stock at $1,30 and covered at $1,60'.

coup d' eia\

is the grand

awoop of tho JSrie in leasing the ColumOhioago and the Indiana Central

Some months sinje the Pennsylvania Central consolidated earnings with the Pittsburgh-, Fort Wayne and Chicago, and the Pan Handle from Columbus to Pittsburgh, the effect of which was to put off the Indiana Oentral from the trade of tfat ftbrtfewest. diverting that business to the Toledo, Port Wayne and Chicago, and also to cripple the Indiana Oentral in its^Southwett connections. It was natural that she should seek some seaboard connection outside of the Pennsylvania Central. Thisshe has now accomplished.

What tffect th» consolidation will have on the new route to Paris, Illinois, from this point, and on the new St .Louis route via Vaodalis, it is impossible to determine. The Pennsylvania Central will still have an outlet to Indianapolis via the Bellefontalne. Or if that shonld be cut off by the Lake Shore and New York Oentral interest the Pennsylvania Central.* has only to build twenty eight miles of road frrm chmond, Indiana, to Cambridge City, tc connect thar with the Junction Rjad to this city, and thence by the various routes West.

The New York and Erie has nosr become the largest railway, under one cor* porations, in the world, possessing nearly two hundred million dollars' worth of property, with all its franchises, powers and privileges

We doubt whether soch vast power in the hands of a single organization can be conducted for tna public good still the competition of the three other great rival routea to.oor seaboard may prevent serious evils. With a broad gauge from Urbana'to Indianapolis our eiticens will have anew route for shipment to the seaboard without transfer. The power of such a gigantic corporation for good o,

for aril is beyond estimation. If its POW" er »h*ll be used for the interest* of JJte country, we welcome the consoldation, qut if it shall be used for political, personal, or stock-jobbing interests, we deplore it

for the present.

tually constructing a new road to Chicago) by laying a third rail and building a few miles of new track, was knocked into •'pi' by Vanderbilt, the managers of the Erie have had on foot negotiations, tending to secure the aame result by different mtans. They have probably been hastened in this by the action of Pennsylvania Central, in securing the Pittsburg, Fort Wayne and Chicago road, and which also •!. .i1 n*l Knal

threatened the taking cf the ColumbusH of duty toward those who are

Chicago, to New York and

Boston In addition to these new fines secured, the Erie will own a large interngt one-third, we believe—in the Indianapolis and Vincennes and the Vincennes and Cairo roads. The Erie Will then be. with perhaps one exception, the greatest railroad corporation iathe world.— IU great rival, the New

will be thrown completely in the shade, •o far as Western traffic is concerned, and even the Pennsylvania Central will have been distanced. The magnitude of these operations is astounding, aud far exceeds anything ever dreamed of in the way of railroad consolidation.

What the effect of this great change will be upon Indianapolis is more than can be told now, but we think it can not be anything else than good. It increases the importance of our city as a railroad center, and may possibly be the meatas of constructing new lines which will center here. The Pennsylvania Central mus^l have soma outlet, jpf feeder in the direction of St. Louis, and as it already owns a line to Columbus, Ohio, it is but fair to suppose it will push on out. Besides, it is interested in eeveral roads building in the West, including the Indianapolis, Crawfordsville and Danville, and the new route from Terre Haute to St. Louie, and it is, not piobable that it can agord to lose" the advantages derived from their construction. Be this as it may, howeveT,.tbe increased business brought about by consolidation will bo of great advantage to our city, as this will be the direct route from the East to St Louis and the Southwest.
