If this statement is correct, if the deceased was not tho wife of AttOusTus I Dickens, but merely bis paramour, while C. The matter has gone so far that justice to the I dead as well as the living requires tbat the facts should be given to the public,
The country has tried Grant as a military commander he is now to be trfed as a civil administrator. He is doubt* less aware of the great responsibility before him, and on what ''slippery ground" he is soon to step. The circumstances are favorable for a splendid triumph oVor public abuse.
Desperate men have gone to suoh jm extent in public swindling that should ftufT secure an honest service to the country the contrast will be one of the proudest monuments that ever secured an immortality of fame. We have fkithiin General Grant, and so has all the world.

suit him. She consulted Francois Joye, the heiV doctor, who shuffled some cards, and said, "Behold! there is a death that will be very agreeable to you." Joye finally prevailed upon her to give her husband some powders, and to cover up the matter* "burn a wax candle to the Virgin Mary.' She communicated with her mother, Madame Dye, her intention to kill her husband, and wa8 encouraged to the act by the mother, who said that she had deN elded to poison her own husband. A few days before his death, Mr. Gilbert left his guilty wife the full enjoyment of his property.
Such were the principals in these jisoning tragedies. Mme. Lambert, the fortune-teller, was next examined. She is described as "a woman of assured look and powerful forehead." She had been married, though she had not lived with her husband for children. She he beat her and did not give her sufficient money* She never had lovOrs, was a tailoress, and lived by her, industry. She practiced fortuneteHftig /She denied that the pow d«rs given t»: the woman Salvago were poison. She said that M. Joye handed her the powders to give to Mme. Salvago but she did not know/ they were poison. Mme. Salvagoprotested that her statement was entirely tree. Mme. Lambert also denied complicity in the Ville case^ though she acknowledged to shuffling the cards for her, and advising her of the man Joye who "bewitched people.":
The woman Yille still insisted that Lambert not only knew that poisoning was the object, but that she herself first proposed it. Joye professed to draw peo pie to him by the force of bis masquerie charms. When confronted with Joye, she said: "Abl if they had left you free for ten years, you would have caused half Marseilles to perish."
The prisoner Joye was then examined He stated that he had been imprisoned at Toulon for exercising tho profession of medicine and for swindling. He then came to Marseilles, where he sold Wine and herbs, and "occupied himaelf a little with spiritualism." He told fortunes, and many people came to him. He did not charge for his spiritualism, though he told fortunes for a franc and sometimes less. He got a license to practice herb doctoring. On being asketf why arsenic was found in his room, since herb-doctors did not use it, he said he did not know it was there.
He said that Marino, the lover of Mm& Salvage, came to him, sayiog that he was in a difficulty between two women, and that he wanted to kill his wife and keep his mistress. The accused stated that on being threatened on all sides by the police he took to Mme. Yille "all she wanted," He said the woman Gabriel applied to him to enchant one of her lovers, whom she pointed out to him. He continued to do all he conld by invocation and en chantment. The woman Garriell insisted that he proposed to poison her husband
I
She thought if he was out of the way her lover would come back to her. On being pressed he confessed to giving pois on to the woman Dye to kill her husband. He also confessed that Mme. Lambert requested poison of himjfor another woman to kill her husband also medicines to produce abortion on three young girls, which he refused. VVhen asked bow it was that he was so mixed up with such criminal matters, he replied: "Was I not driven into it by a crowd of women?"
At this stage of the proceedings the Court adjourned and further facts are to enrao. S
