The Speakership*
Marion county has two candidates for the Speakership of the House of Itepresentatives, Hon. A. P. Stanton and T. J. Vater.—Exchange.
Both of these "candidates" are very worthy gentlemen, but neither of them happens to possess the.peculiar qualifications icdispensible in a Speaker. If either of them should chance to be elected to that position he would soon wish himself out of it, as has been the case with others. It is no disparagement of any man's abilities to question hia fitness for the Speakership, for we doubt if there are, among the more than three hundred and forty thousand voters of this State, more than a hundred men who could preside over the House with credit to themselves or to the satisfaction of that body. We hope the Republican members of the House will make a judicious selection among the candidatos for the Speakership. Much depends upon that officer, and unless the chair is filled by a competent gentleman, the important business of tho session cannot be got through with in the prescribed time. The Legislature has a great deal of work before it, and we hope it will not be delayed by the incompetency of any officer. There has been too muck of crowding the work of sixty days into the last night session, and then rushing it through without regard to decency or propriety. We shall have a repetition of that sort of thing unless a good Speaker is oiected.

SENATOR "WILSON encounters very great opposition from the ^Democracy in his efforts to reorganize the Supreme Court by an addition to the number of petticoateu fogies. The further proposition to permit a fogy who is seventy years old to retire from the bench at hit option, retaining bis full salary for life meets With no favor. The Democracy base their opposition on the assumption that Wilson and others who aim to disturb existing arrangements as to the number of Judges and the tenure of their ofice, ate merely seeking to bake the Supreme Court less conservative. We are not of those who have unshaken and implicit faith in the power of Radical men to resist the conservative influences that brood over the Supreme bench, and give to the court room an air of dim solemnity, through which the light of new ideas and novel views of human rights •ad human destiny letSom breaks, in even scattered rays. When you add to this the life tenure of office, you have very nearly pat the hermetical seal on the judicial mind, preventing all influx of radicalism. reorganization w(th any political purpose of getting rid of conservatism need not be undertaken with sanguine expectations. At least, we can see no more probable explanation pf the reports that the Erie gentlemen have compromised their innumerable suits."
THE following "good one" is told of Bishop Clark of Rhode Island, who, by ^he way, is quite as fond of a joke as any member of the laity: During the late session of the Genetal P. E. Conference in New York city, the subject of prohibiting the marriage of divorced people beiog under consideration, he stated that in Rhode Island divorces were obtained for such slight causes as to imperil the morals of the whole community, and that men actually sold their wives, mentioning an instance of a man selling his wife Cor $10,000. "Are such transactions common in your diocese asked a brother bishop. "Not at that price," promptly responded the bishop.

He says that after Judge Brady'* speech the President gave "three cheers for the State of New-York,'' which most have been a noble and inspiriting spectacle and that the entertainment "was gotten up with the artistic excellence of the cuitnary art that distinguishes all of Delmonico's efforts in thi.t line, and w?aa topped off \oith the divine iblefsin^yiatpked by the Rev. Dr. Hitchcock.'7 Another "effort in that line" is made by a Washington correspondent of the same paper, who writes that the celebration of Forefathers' Day at the capital ended with "the doxology and dancing."
The Lao^nla (N. H.) Poisoning Case From tb^ Great Fall* (N. •.) Journal, Dec. 19.' A cf.se of attempted poisoning occurred at Lf.eonia on Wednesday of last veek [Sonne of the particulars have been already given.—ED. HERALD] Mrs. Isabella .Farrar was arrested tor attempting to poison her husband, Geo. L. Farrar (who is a brother of Wm. H. Farrar, of Great Falls). The latter received a letter from his sister, who was visiting at the house of her brother at Laconia, from which we are permitted to make the following ex tract:
George has had a time of it, and his wife is at the bottom of it all. Sufficient proof has been found. She has heen lodged In jail—bonds $5,000. She has been trying her poison all summer, without doubt. His medicine and food have been watched for the last week, and milk which she prepared was given to two cats which sent them info convulsions. She has been writing to Aoaah Moulton, and the lot ter*' have been secured and they have telegraphed for her arrest at Lowell. It seems that she and Isabella have planned to put him out of the way, so that they can keep house there—a fancy one doubtless. How horridl She sent for her father
andean uncle, hoping to.get bail, but they have not yet concluded to go that. She will stand a chance to rest a while. He has had his eatabies from Mrs. Jewell's for about a Week, and what bis wife has prepared has been set aside, and he has improved fast by the change. The milk and medicine are now in Boston to be analyzed.
It is said the dish of milk has been analyzed and no poison found.

The Largest Skeleton Ever Fouud —The Kxhnmatlon of an Antediluvian HOBUM SkeietOH
From the Sank Rapid) Seatinel, 18th. I Day before yesterday, while the quar* rymen employed by the Sauk Rapids Water Power Company were engaged in quarrying rock for the dam which is being erected across the Mississippi at this place, they found imbedded in the solid grante rock the remains of a human being of gigantic stature. About seven feet below the surface of the ground, and about three feet and a half beneath the upper stratum of rock, the remains ware found imbedded in the sand, which had evidently been placed in the quadrangular grave which had been dug out of the solid rock to receive the last remains of thk antediluvian giant. The grave was twelve feet ia length, four feet wide, and about three feet in depth, and is to-day at least two feet below the present level of the river. The remains are completely petrified, and are o£gigantic dimensions The head is massive, measures thirty-*ne. and one half iaoh«9 ia circumference, but low in the froniit, and very fiat on he top. The femur meatrea twenty six and a quarter inches, and the fioula twenty-five and a half, while the body is equally long in proportion. From the crown of the head to the sole of the foot the length is ten feet nine and a half inches. The measure around the chest is fifty-nine and a half inches. This giant must have weighed at least 900 pounds of flesh. The petrified remains, and there is nothing left but the naked bones, now weigh three hundred and Sour and a quarter pounds. The thumb tod fingers of the left hand, and the left foot, from the ankle to the toes, are gone but all the other parts are perfect. Over the sepulchre of tho oafcaostn dead was placed a large flat limestone rock that remained perfectly separated from the surrounding granite rock.
Theae wonderful remain* of an antediluvian, gigianttc race are intheposaession of a gentleman who ha« started with it to his residence East. This gentleman, it then is Mftd Wlll Winl the remain* to Boston, and possibly we may hear ali that can be said on the subject by the learned in these things. It is supposed by some of our ablest men, among whom is General Thomas, that many more skeletons will be found duri&jg the process of excavating the granite rocks in tha place. Some seem to think that these remains were deposited in this sarcophagus prior to the formation of the present strata of rocks that now abound here but this is a mere conjecture.
A Beautiful Passage*
Artesian wells are sunk through the sod of tho prsiries, through the loam, through the gravel, through the hard-pair which is almost granite, until at last, 1,000 or 1,500 feet beneath the surface, the hand of man reveals a deep and rapid river coursing through those solitary, sunless depths at a speed of ten miles as koor, swifter than the Ohio, or Mississippi, or Hudson, or any of the bountiful and imperial streams of this country, flowing, as they do through picturesque mountain scenery, stately forest qt enamelled meadow, amid towered cities or cultivated fields. And when the shaft has reached that imprisoned river, and the rent for the firBt time has been made through its dungeon wall, the waters remembering the august source on far distant mount-ain-tops, whence fegea ago they 'fell, leap upward to the light with terrible energy, rising in an instant far above the surface of the earth, and pouring forth their healthful and fertilizing current to delight and refresh mankind. And with even such "an awakening are we gladdened when nalf-forgottea humanity bursts from time to time out of the depths in which it hag pursued its joyless, sunless course, moaning and murmuring through long centuries, but never quite forgetting its divine and distant origin. Such was the upward movement out of intellectual thraldom which wo call thp Reformation, when the shaft of Luther strurk the captive stream such an awakening but. a more signifioant and hopeful one, has been heralded for this whole Republic,
East and "West, North and South, and for all humanity, by the triumphjof the right in the recent Soar years conflict, in which all havo beea conquerors.—/. L. Motley's Address before the if. T. Historical Society-
