Being a member of the Methodist church she sent for some of her fellow members to attend her in her dying hour, and to them she confessed that about seven years ag3 she poisoned her infant child and that it died,T.and a .year afterwards she administered poison to her husband's father. Later still, on the return of ber husband from the army she dealt to him also a fatal poison.
The woman had borne a good character. The only reason assigned for making this dying .confession was her desire to rid her conscience of this load of crime prior to her death.

THE FRENCH CABLE.
It appears the French Cable Compan^ has bought from Leigh & Howard, of this city, a charter granted by the legislature of this State conferring upon tlierti a valuable telegraph franchise.— Part of the purchase money was conditioned upon procurement of the opinion of the Chief Justice, to the effect that the charter confers exclusive right to lay and work cables between the shores and islands of New York and France, so that no future act of the Legislature of the State or the Congress of the United States can limit that right, or authorize any one else to interfere with its enjoyment.
The Chief Justice declined to give opinions, and recommended B, R. Curtis be tried, and from him and from Mr. Evarts unsatisfactory opinions were ren coived.
The company next made trial of Reverdy Johnson, and procured his opinion in a banquet speech.
In tho course of his remarks our Minister said he would remind his friends belonging to the empire of Franco of the aid they rendered to America in the Revolution. Their government did not differ much from England in the great principles upon which it was founded.— Thev had made each State sovereign, and each was left in undisturbed possession of its own territory, therefore be could not understand how the doubt had risen what the company wanted. Altogether he did not precisely know, but he supposed they wanted as much as they could get, but if they wanted to carry their wires into Maryland, and got permission of the State, no one could hinder them from going there. the isthmus canal.

The Post says it is asserted that Gen Grant has been consulted about the Pana ma Ship Canal, and is warmly in favor of the scheme. It is said he thinks its speedy construction necessary to preserve our commercial and naval supremacy, and our empire on the Pacific.
It is rumored Gushing has been examining maps to report upon, the most feasible line ior a canal, and thBt hels convinced the canal must be built at or very near the line of the present Panama R. R., and that the Canal Company and the Railroad Company ought to be on#.".
