OfrBtftta Prisons.
froatbe Pataam Banaar.]' An articlerstppeared in the Indianapolis
Journal
of a recent date on the man
agement of our State Prisons under Republican rule, by which it appears that the directors of the Southern Prison will be able,4? r!iport at their next settlement s—wwygfr'tbe tlfyOOOUppropri ated for annual current expenses, the Prison having become entirely self-sup-porting. This is certainly very gratify ing to the tax payers of Indiana, and especially so to the friends of those gen tlemen who have so admirably managed the trust confided to them.
Buttthis much, and perhaps more, may beeaid of the management of the North ern prison. Upon examining the appro priations made by the Legislature two vears ago, it will be found that near two hundred thousand dollars were apropri ated to the Northern Prison, to pay old debts that had accumulated for current expenses, and the building for the completion of the unfinished walls, and the cell house, andfbr building the kitchen, dining room and hospital.
This bogs Bum teems to have been ju diciously expended. The walls of the ptfsoti tfcd tne cell lionse hato beeh com pleted the kitchen, dining room, hospital and chapel have .been built, all strictly wttUn the apptiqiriations, so that the Legislature, will not be called upon to make any appropriation to supply deflcieUtitti hil a portion of tbe funda ap propriated for current expeoBes have been used, it bas been owing to the fact that the prison was in course of construe tioa, and the loss by fire of one of tu» principal shops, which has been rebuilt *t,a cost of over five thousand dollars Besides, the. labor
at
folly one-third of
the coeviots coaid not be leased atpsofitable rates, and bfought nothing into the treasury-,. Thislaborhss.however, been used in rebuilding the shop, and in mak ing lewersgn aitd other improvements which otherwise would have cost tbe State a laige outlay.
The Northern prieon is now colaplete, fart at leastj the State proposes to lid at present, and not one dollar of indebtedness stands against jt It is an "Bflffflftto tbe Stcte, ~aod the men who luilt It. The prison labor hat been leased at profitable rates, and thfc most perfect diseipline is maintained. But, what Is better, an earnest course of mdral training, under the administration of Rev Aaron Wood, as Morel Instructor, "1»: being faithfully carried out-
AU this has been consummated under the management of Republican Directors, *nd~the result
of
their work contrasts
happily with that tjf their Damocratic predecessors, who will be riinaiabered only fbr theic abitt^y to jaquander the people's money. And the same contrast will be found in the adminwtrsAion of every other department of thej State government, showing oonclusivefy^that it the people want an economical and WtMal management of affaire, they must keep the. Demooratic party out of |ower.
