EIGHTEENTH YEMii

An Awful and Disgraceful Tragedy.

Our dispatches give full particulars of

one of the most daring, and in many re-

spects, unparalleled outrages ever perpe-

trated north of Mason and Dixon's line.

The gang of scoundrels, banded together

under the name of "Seymour Regulators,"

and who, under pretense of punishing

crime have committed crimes vastly more

heinous than those they have pretended

to punish, have at last put the climax to

their infamy by the commission of an act

—the performance of a terrible trage4y—

which will arouse the indignation of all

who care for the good name of our State,

an act which should lead to the inaugu-

ration of prompt and decisive measures

for the extermination of a gang the fur-

ther existence of which is incompatible

with the safety and honor of this com-

monwealth.

Early on Saturday morning, sixty or

seventy of these fiendish miscreants ar-

rived at New Albany by rail, took forci-

ble possession of the jail, and dragged

from their cells the three Renos and Charles Anderson, confined and wait-

ing trial for the great Express Robbery,

with the history of which our readers are

familiar.

Being in possession of their intended victims they lost no time in hurrying

victims they lost no time in hurrying

them into eternity |by hanging them to

the iron iron railing around their cells. Their work of murder accomplished, the vil-

lains departed to their homes in Seymour. It is to be. hqped .the authorities, will be

able to detect at least a portion of these

outlaws and, by change of venue to some

civilized portion of the State, may suc-

ceed in acquiring their conviction. For details of this strange and most disgrace-

ful tragedy we refer to our telegraphic

columns.

Express Bobbers Hung by lators. Cincinnati, Dec. 12.—The following particulars of the hanging of the Renos, at New Albany, have been received:

New Albant, Ind., Dec. 12.—Between three and four o'clock this morning from sixty to seventy Seymour regulators, masked and heavily armed, arrived here via Jeffersonville railroad.-— Immediately upon their arrival they proceeded by a direct route to the county jail, placing guards at every street and alley to gnard-against surprise. Arriving at the jail, one of the guards stationed outside there took alarm, and attempted to raise an alarm but was quickly taken charge of and placed under guard. They then entered the office of the jail, and after twelve or fifteen of them had entered, Sheriff Fullilove, awakened by the disturbance,' came to the door, when they oamacdedjhe keys. He attempted to get away by dodging down a cellar way, a&u coming out on the outside of the building, but he was commanded to surrender, and by some means was shot through the arm. They had cow complete possession of the jail and found the keys in theSheriflTs bedroom, when they immediately proceeded to the cells, and forced one of the guards to unlock the cells- They took Frank Reno, Simeon Reno, Bill Reno and Charles Anderson, the express robbers, out and hung them to the iron railing or posts supporting the walk around the outside of the cells. The victims were placed in chairs, the ropes adjusted, and the chairs kicked from under them, Frank and Simeon hanging to one post, Simeon in front and Frank behind him the other brother hanging at a corner post, and Anderson backwards in the rear of the Jai'-

After being satisfied that their victims were dead, the bold marauders quickly locked up the jail and all its occupants, taking the keys with them and takingone of the County Commissioners to tho depot, when, after all being ready, they started away, giving the Commissioner tbe keys.

Ab soon as possible the alarm was sounded, but too late, no one could be found, and all that remained to show their presence was the dead bodies of the express robbers.

The most intense excitement prevails here, and is getting higher overy minute, tho news spreading like wild fire.

Mrs. Frank Reno and Mrs. Anderson are in the city. Frank Reno fought the regulators, knocking three of them down, but was overpowered and knocked senseless, his head being badly bruised and blood running down his face.

The victims presented a most ghastly and horrible spectacle. From the jail to the train armed men stood guard to prevent any alarm being given.

At 4 o'clock the train with the entire party started off. They came well armed and equipped for the work. They intended to hang a man named Clark, the murderer of George Tilley, but they concluded not to do so, fearing to remain long-

The vigilante came from Seymour, Indiana, in a car by themselves, attached to the regular train.

Chas. Anderson and Frank Reno were surrendered by the Canadian authorities upon the solemn pledge by the United Statae government that they should have a fair trial, and if found innocent be roi turned to Canada.

Chicago, Dec. 13.—The local committees are very busy in their preparations for the great army reunion which is to take place in this city on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.
