T1IK DISASTER flF FRIDAY NI01IT. From the Cincinnati Times.] Tho steambent disaster on the Ohio river, near Florenco, Ifld., on Friday night, was sufficiently appalling to enforce attention to the causes of the disaster. It seems that there was a conflict between the pilots of tlie America and the Unitod States at that dreadful hour of midnight darkness, when the lives of hundreds who had intrusted themselves to their care, were at stake!

What right had those pilots to disagree as to their respective rights to the middle of the river? Are not the rules of navigation on tho Ohio yet settled, after nearly three-quarters of a century of barge and just half a century of steamboat transportation? That they are well settled there can be no doubt. Why, then, that fatal conflict of rights at that solemn moment? There is room here for investigation.

Then, again, it is testified by Capt. Wade, that the night was dark, but not foggy. We have supposed that the dark', er the night the brightor shines artificial light, whon there is no fog. What excuse then for a collision? The pilot of the America says "it was so dark that he could not see the signal lights of the United States." lie does not say that there was either fog or smoke to interfere and certainly his experience should tell him that mere darkness is not sufficient to render light invisible?

There are doubtless many things to be inquired into before the exact truth will be known about this dreadful calamity. The sudden and terrible destruction of seventy human beings will doubtless prompt the parties concerned to most searching investigation. Undoubtedly the masters of our river navigation desire above all things, and intend, that every possible guaranty of safety shall be afforded to person and property intrusted to them.

One more reflection. What about the petroleum on board the United States, which so suddenly sprinkled itself over the fire and flashed up to heaven like a flash of lightning, and suddenly wrapping both steamers in all-consuming flame? Now that so many disasters have shown it to be almost as fatal as gunpowder at the touch of the lsve Bpark, should it not ba held criminal for any carrier of passengers to receive this sort of freight? There are modes enough for the transportation of Petroleum beside the steamboats and cars that carry human beings.

We grant that it is not proper for tho press to ba hasty in forestalling public opinion as lo the responsibility of euch calamities. The public should wait paa 1 tl-i nvi^Anna KaforA inrltiloinif

calamities. The public should wait pa-

Ohrlstadoro's flair Preservative, tiently for the evidence before indulging .. .. J. jt ton HFivArfllv in censure. In this case. too severely in censure. In this case, however, the cry "ao one to blame," without a full investigation, will not satisfy the public mind.

THE GREAT CALAMITY.

From the Cincinnati Chronicle.]

The collision and burning of the fine steamers of the Louisville Mail Line, the America and the United States with a sad loss of life, has startled and appalled our community. No boats were deemed safer, and no company doing business on the river has been more fortunate in exemption from disasters hitherto, during a long period of years. The public—and tho company as well, we presume—will not rest content without a thorough investigation of the causes which produced results so terrific. Meanwhile, we know that, while the night was unusually dark, it was not foggy the lights of tho boats were seasonably recognized, or might havebeen and signal whistles ware blown but misunderstood or disregarded. A strong wind blowing up stream may have prevented the signal of the descending boat from being distinctly beard. The petreloum freight was a dangerous element in the case, and was so stowed that a portion of it was breught in contact with the fires of tho United States the moment of the collision. Tho pilots of both steamero are men of experience and ot good repute in their calling, so far as we are aware.

A presence of mind, hardly to bo expected from persons just roused from sleep, would probably have saved nearly nil the passengors, brief as was the time HIlowed

for escapo. The loss of so many

al to short distance from the land and under circumstances so dreadful, with the liery eloment furiously pressing its victims ou the one hand, and the watery deep awaiting them on the other, will make this calamity ever memorable as one of almost unparalleled horrors. The passougers who escaped lost nearly all their effects on board, and tho company losses heavily in freight, as well as in tho distruction of its costly boats. But these resaltsiare trivial in comparison}with the sacrifice ol' human life.

From the light as yet thrown upon the case, the responsibility for this fearful calamity is likely to rest exclusively upon one or both of the pilots of the two colliding boats. If the theory that they were consciously contending which should pass on the shore side, bo correct, there was a recklessness of human life involving the highest criminality. No one should accept this opinion through hasty inference merely. Criminal negligence would be innocence, compared with this. We hope to know all about the matter soon. The hurried testimony as yet furnished is more or less conflicting, and clearly ioascurate in many particulars.

When an experienced pilot tells you it was so dark (though not foggy) that he could not see the lights of an approaching steamer, it is manifest that his optics were not in good condition. This statement is attributed to one who was in the wheelhouse with the pilot of the America but he was probably misunderstood. What we need is full, careful and sworn testi mony.
