THi! CJevel^id Leader announced last week, witM&op sorrow, "that the editor of the Cincinnati Gazette has go^e crazy." It aays, «5 a reason for this conclusion, that it baa read a recent long article of his through twice, "from beginning to end, and then from end to beginning, and It doesn't mako conao cither way."
How much moro quickly execution fol lows judgment, politically speaking, in England than in this country. The Brit ish Parliamentary elections were some time later than our Presidential one, yet the new Premier is already installed' while wo must ondure our popularly condemned Chief Executive three months more.
THE telegraph informed us that three more offenders wore publicly whipped in Delaware on Saturday, two of them having previously stood for an hour in the pillory. It was not the criminals so much as Littlo Delaware that were disgraced in this way. Conviction and imprisonment furnish all needful degra dation for the former.

THE New York Times makes the mo tion that WESTON, the great walkiat, go right on when he gets to St. Paul, and not go thore and bach, as advertised.
The Cincinnati Timet seconds that motion, If he will proceed directly west of that place, we are willing that ho shall walk more than 5,000 miles, and do it as fast as ho wants to. will be contested, in spito of his large majority. The ground of contest mentioned is that he has not been long enough a citizen to entitle him to a seat. The game paper thinkB a like objection will be made to any colored Representa tive or Senator who has besn etnancipa1 ted since 1862. If so, the defense of the right to sit of either of the members whoso seats are thus disputed, willdoub! less be able and exhaustive.
THE St. Louis Democrat rather Beverly says of Judge CHAPMAN'S attempt "suppress publishers Excluding reporters and admitting spectators has been tried before. The judge who undertakes it may know law, but he knows nothing else. If stupidity is often "worse than criminal," this same judge deserves all the lashing that he receives, and his stilted and swollen importance of air raises hearty laugh whenever the report of his doings is read.

BOUTWKLL,
of
Massachusetts, is very generally spoken of for Secretary of tho Treasury. His skill and executive ability, as manifested in organizing tho Bureau, of Internal Revenue, have no doubt contributed to a conviction that his known energy and integrity can be made especially service able at the head of the Treasury Depart ment.
It is more probable, however, that he will be called to tho State Department, unless Mr. WASHBURN® should feel averse to undertaking the severe labors of tho Treasury. Either appointment would give assurance of an honest and economl c.al administration *of the Department
THK London Times has attempted to t.ako satisfaction out of DIARAKLI by denouncing his resignation as a "cowardly retreat." It is morally certain that had he remained to beard the new Parliament by his stubbornness, the same "Thunder, or" would have found occasion to warmly denounce his obstinacy. "When a man is down, hit him," seems to be the motto of the English press. A man who has been guilty of failure is a safe subject for abuse. DTSBAKLI being, juBt now, down, the Times and its cowardly imitators will, of course, do their best to keep him in that position. The course of the late Premier may have baeu unusual, but there are few, on this 6ido of the Atlantic, who will say it was inj idicious.
to be a settled fact that a
man, in any part of this country, may ilay the seducer of his wife, daughter or sister with impunity, so far as the verdict of a jury is concerned. Witness the verdict in the COLK-HISCOCK case: "Tha jury stated they found the pria. oner to be s&no at a moment before and a moment after the killing, but wore ia doubt as to hia sanity on the instant of homicide. The judgo said thoy must give the prisoner the benefit of the dcubt, and thus instructed? they rend«rei a verdict of acquittal."
That tella tbe whole story. Men who propose to play the role of seducer may as well understand that they will do so outside the protection of law that their lives will be regarded by the public sentiment of the country as justly forfeited to tho avenger of woman's wrongs. We do not propose to discuss this sort of common law. but simply state it as an accepted fact.

The New York Tribune says: "Tho naturo of this gigantic combination, effected by tho great Pennsyl vania line, while ours are busy feeing lawyers and procuring injunctions, may be better comprehended in the light of the fact that it brings underjone management property valued at two hundred and eighty millions of dollars, and reaches for freight and passengers from Philadelphia to Chicago, Cincinnati, and St. Louis."

INDIANAPOLIS,
Dec. 1,1868.
The papers have pitched into Judge Chapman without stint for his attempt to muzzle tbe press. They have all had their say, and generally have said it well It was an outrage upon thejpublic, and especially so in this particular case, and if the Judge of the Criminal Court can not see it in that light, it is because he underestimates the intelligence of the people.- jTba Judge in this instance not only erred in making the order, prohibit ing the publication of the testimony, but ha indulged in illnatured llings at th press, and was feebly sarcastic in refer ring to tbe assumption of the editors that it was in the spirit of public enterprise and desire to accede to the wishes of the community, and not a yearning for dol lars and cents particularly, that induced them to undergo tho risks of disregard ing Lis judicial embargo.
It will be remembered, in extenuation of the Judges proceedings, that the order grow out of an application of the counsel for tho defendant, and was inada by Judg Chapman, as ho says, unwillingly and in doferonce to tho counsol, thinking at tho tune that it would probably be of equal benefit to the State and tho defendant. After the ordor was made, however, and when it was seen that a storm was brew ing, tbe Court, to maintain its imperial dignity, proceeded to enforce it, and in so doling erred again, and again manifest ei petulance and ill-humor.
There was as much to aggravate the public in tho manner of the Courl, and a certain military threat of power, as the order itself, and the natural result was a determination that no one-man power, misguided and arbitrary as this, should be allowed to flourish in terorem over a law abiding and justice-loving community.
Soon after tho apparent enforcement of the ordor it was seen by tho counsel for the defence that the movement was having a bad effect in various ways, and that a strong prejudice was growing rap idly against them. It was even whis" pered audibly that the suppression of the testimony was a part of a scheme tose cure the acquittal of the accused, that the jury was carefully selected by the defendant's counsel from tho neighbohood in which she'had lived, and that prominent mon of the city were using money and influence to bring about a "result that could not be obtained under an impartial trial. As soon as the order was rescinded however, these mutterings eeased, and as therelwas no good grounds for them, they are heard no more.
MRS. CLKM.
You have doubtless seen something in the papers of the personnel of tbe wo man who is accused of the murder, or of being an accessory in the terrible taking off, of Mr. and Mrs. Young. Whether she is,guilty or not, she is a remarkable woruac. She comes into court attended by hor hushand, who is v(ith her all the time, in and out of jail, and carries hersoli with a certain defiant air which teems to aay she is not guilty of the mur der—that is, that she did not do the shooting and mangling—but that she know! how it came about, and so far as •he is concerned the State can find it out, if it can. She is keenly alive to all that )s going on in the trial, but exhibits no •motion during the examination of witnesses) or in the recital of testimony that points unerringly to her as a participant of tha great crime.
He? husband, fine looking mau of about forty, clings to his wife in ail her trouble. He says he believes her to bo entirely innocent, that she is the victim of a conspiracy to divert attention from the rosl criminals, but that he will accept tho issue of the trial and be guided in his relations to her as that may decide.
MTSTKRT OF 7'HE MURDER.
The theory advanced soon after the discovery of the murder, that Young belonged to a band of counterfeiters, or
slill entertained by many, si assume something like tangible £hag£e ia 'he evidence of the^itneases. It is not generally believed thai Y«ung was murdered solely for the money he had, though that may have been one of the objects in view but that some violation of Compact, or quarrel over ill-gotten gains, resulted in lite twrrlMe tragedy. One ef the witnessess, a dressmaker, examined Saturday, testified that she hod loaned Mrs. Clem $925,that the last time she bad asked for it, Mrs. Clem tbreatned her, saying she (the witness) would be ki lied by one of a company, if sko told anything about her* -*l ts'i-•
It bas been suspected for some lime past that an organization fur counterfeiting, Bafe-blowing, etc, has had headquarters near this city, and though it may have no .-exBtonce .outside of the vague rumors of that character that are Bomotimas floating .about, the trial it is hoped, will lead to soma developeiAents that will either confirm or remove the suspicion.
THE VBLOCIPEDK MANIA
bas arrived and bide lair to be the 'most fashionable sensation. Quite a number have already been ordered by persons here, and the ooming spring will no doubt find a number of amateur velocipedestrians practicing on the ctreets running ihto the public's shins, and terrifying people generally. If ordinary mortals can manage them as well as tho Hanlons who were on the street- with them last week, they area success, but to the unitiated looker-on, one might as well try to sleep comfortably on a clothesline a» to ride a velocipede.
J.
Sclentflc Oaring.
From Onco a Week One dull day in August, just after noon, a balloon roso in the air at the foet of Cloet Hills, on tho western edge of the contral plain of England. It was inflat ed with tbe lightest of gases which chemieal skill could produce, and It rose with amazing velocity. A mile up and it en tared a stratum of cloud more than a thousand feet thick- Emerging from this the sun shone brightly on the air ship the sky overhead was of the clearest and deepest blue, and below lay cloud land—an immeasurable expanse of cloud, whose surface looked as solid as that of tho efertb not wholly lost to view. Lotty mountains and deep, dark ravines appeared bolow the peaks and sides of those cloud-mountains next the sun, glittered like snow, but casting shadows as if they were solid rock. Up rose the balloon with tremendous velocity. Pour miles above earth a pigeon was let loose: dropped down through the air as if it had been a stone. The air was too thin to enablo it to liy. It was as if a bark laden to the deck were to pass from the heavy waters of the sea into an inland unsaline lake the bark would sink at once in the thinner water. Uuj up, still higher! What a silence profound 1 The bights of tb sky were ad still as the deepest depth of the ocean, where as was found during the search for the lost Atlantic cable, tbe fine mud iB as ucstirred from year to year as the dust which imperceptibly gathers on tho furniture of a deserted house. No sound, no life—only tho bright sunshine falling through a sky which it could not warm.—
Up—fiva miles above earth—higher than the inaccessible summit of the Chim berazo or Dawangiri. Despite the sun shine, everything freezes. The air grows too thin to support life, even for a few minutos. Two men only are in that ad venturous balocn—tho one steering the air-ship, tbe other watching the scientific instruments, and recording tbem with rapidity bred of long practice. Suddenly, as the latter looks at his instruments, his sight grows dim betakes along to help his sight, and only marks from tbe fal ing barometer that they are rising rap idly. A flask of brandy lies within afoot of him ho tried to reach it, but his arm refused to obey his will. He tries to call on his comrade, who has gone up into tb« ring above, a whisper in that deep silonce would suffice, but no sound comes from his lips—ho is voiceless. The steersman comos down into the car ho sees his'com rade in a swoon, and feels his own senses failing him.
He saw at once that life anddeath bung upon a foW moments. He seized or trie*, to seize the valye, in order to open it and let out tho gas. His hands are purple with' intense cold—they are paralyzed they will not respond to his will. He seized the valve with bis teotb, It opened a little—once, twice, thrice. The balloon began to, decend.. Then the swOoned marksman returnd to consciousness, and saw the steersman standing before him He looked at his instrument, but now the barometer was rising rapidly the balloon was deecending. Brandy was nsed. They had been higher above Ibe earth than mortal man or any living thing had ever been before. One minUto more of inac tion—of compulsory inaction—on the part of the steersman, whose senses were failing him, and the air-ship, with its intensely rarefied gas, would have been floating unattended, with two corpses, in the realms space.
