outrages as that recently committed at Dunlap, Iowa, so long we may naturally expect to be visited with the blind vengeance of the Indians. Yellow Smoke, chief of the Omaha tribe, was liquored and drugged by roughs of that place, and then brained by a blow from from one of the party. This chief was noted for his friendliness and strict honor with the whites, and it is not surprising that his warriors are gatherin [sic] in angry mood. Here are some fifteen hundred previously amicable savages muttering wrath against innocent men, woman, and children, all on account of the act of these murdering brutes of Dunlap. That place owes it to justice to put these ruffians to death with promptness. Such men can never atone for the innoirent blood which their deeds have caused to be shed.
AS THE character of Brigham Young is studied it becomes more and more a mystory. He is no doubt making exceeding great capital out of his mission. Instead of being a demure, monkish, austere man, he is wide awake to speculation, and seems resolved to have a supply of this world's goods on hand if he is forced to decamp. But we don't believe he ever will decamp. He can afford to allow the Saints to become civilized and break up meeting first. With his natural tact and present wealth he can then be as much an autocrat in business circles around Salt Lake as he now is in religion. The Gentile merchants of his city have been running a tilt with him in sales, and have got rather the best of him. Brigham owns a controlling interest in three stores, and has taken the matter to heart. He delivered a discourse to the faithful upon the subject, and warned them against lowpriced goods and Gentile charmers A resident has written the following to a San Francisco journal concerning the strange man:
In a recen discourse he said the railroad and telegraph companies were the only outsiders that had ever treated him fairly. The cause of this statement is
irith huuurto EimaeL* and cstdft to ths the simple f*ct tW#taonmp.ni-6fecve, NEW ACVERTISEMENT4 brought to him »diiiton*l we-Uth. They both, from motives of policy, gave him valuable contracts. Much ot the railroad grading in Utah, though made ia the names of others, inures" EC
Brigham's individual benefit, and when the road is completed be will be a heavy stockholder. The telegraph company went further than the mere granting of contracts; favors have been conceded, the policy of which is exceedingly doubtful. Brigham owns $50 000 worth of stock, in the California branch alone, $10,000 of which is said to have been a gift by Mr. Street, the builder of the line, in behalf of the company, and the other $40,000 was a contract worked out by Mormons, and credited on their tithing account.— He was also made a director, and, if he desires it every message that passes over the line is shown to him. At one time he had a wire direct from the central office to his own. This, however, caused so much talk that it was removed, at least from sight. Many declare it still exists.
When one of your San Francisco papers expended a large sum of money in procuring by telegraph the message of the President, last December, it was taken off here for the benefit of Brigham, and given free of charge to lhe Mormon papers. We all thought the company, in this, as well as in other matters, went a little too far in its subserviency. +++++
