MAYOR'S COURT.—Not a oase yesterday. A drunken man was "in soak" at the calaboose laet evening. Ho will have a hearing this morning.

THE Visiting Committee of the Ladies' Aid Society are canvassing this city this week soliciting donations for their Festival, to be held in Pence's Hall, on Thursday, 17th of this month.

THE CIRCUIT COURT did nothing yesterday worth mentioning. Young Watson, charged with stealing a watch, on whose case the jury "hung" last week, will probably have another hearing today.

THE protracted meeting at the Christian Chapel is proving quite successful. There were others who responded last evening, whose immersion will take placa after this evening's discourse. The public are invite^ to attend.

PAPER OOLLEBS.—For a neat fitting, serviceable paper collar we know of no better place to go than to N. Erlanger & Brother's, who are now selling at cost their entire stock of clothing and gent's furnishing goods. ,,

THE WEEKLY EXPRESS is issued this morning at te" o'clock. A good paper to send to absent friends. In giving the home news it is belter than a letter.— Single copies ready for mailing c^.be had at tho counting room.

DOWD & SLATE iriftite attention by an advertisement this morning to new arrir vals of furs, gents' underwear, the new Alpine Hat, woollen scarfs, gents' fur collars, capes and gloves at very low prices. Give them a call-in the Metro* pelitan Block, when in want of any article in this line. -i:

DISSOLVED.—The firm of McElfresh' Dengler & Co., proprietors of the Phoenix Foundry and Machine shop, has been dissolved, Mr, Ben Dengler going out. We wish him success ih whatever business he may engage in. The foundry businoBB will be continued by the remaining members of tho firm—T. H. McElfresh and John G. Barnard, practical'and competent workmen, to whom we havo no hesitation in referring such of our readers in want of good work in that line.

OLE BULL'S CONCERT.—The audience assembled at Dowling Hall last evening, in numbers and intelligence, was a magnificent ovation to Ole Bull on the occasion of his first visit to our city. Aad the entertainment furnished was such as to meet the highest expectation. Qf course the principal features of the evening were the violin solos by Ole Bull We shall not attempt a description of dhe playing of the old Norwegian upon the instrument which he has made the study of a long lifo. His first appearance Was the sigaal for the most rapturous ap pl»use, aad the same followed the exeou-' tion of each piece. While he was playing the audience sat as spell bound, drinking each note, amid a stillness almost painful.

Ole Bull has associated with him a company forming a first-class concert of themselves. Mr. Egbert Lansing is a pianist of no ordinary merit Mr. Gustavus Hall is a fair baritone, and sang the aria "Largo al Factotum" in such a manner as to call out & decided encore.

The star vocalist of tho company, howAVer, is Mies Barton, who has a soprano voice of remarkable flexibility and rare cultivation. Each piece she sang was moat enthusiastically encored, to whieh »he most obligingly made acknowledgement by singing again, and the second piece was almost invariably an improvement on tbe first. After the bttllftd "Loving Heart, Trust On," she sung, in response to an encore, "CoMiag thro' tho Rye,'' so naively as to call a second sncore, but this was more than human nature could stand, and she only bowed her grateful thanks. We think we never 3aw an audience so determined on getting the full worth of the money invested in tickets.

The piano used was a Chickering, furnished from Kissner's Palace of Music, and is a splendid instrument.

The fSC&ipts, we learn, were about iix hundred dollars, and at this substantia) as well as the hearty reception given, Ole Bull expresses regret that he did not give as two concerts. Come again, say ail.

OUR MANUFACTORIES.

TIFLBXAFC KEEKS' HUB AND SPOKE FACTORY.—It is really a pleasure for one $rho feels an interest in our growing city^ to'atrbll About the etreota and mark tKeL spirit of improvement that is visible on every hand, and especially is it a pleasure to visit our manufacturing establishments far too fow—and hear the busy hum and clatte Hf machinery. Yesterday, for the first tinie, Wo had the pleasure, under the guidance of Mr. Keyos, of a minute inspection :cf the .novel aqd interesting jnachiaery by which Messrs. Thompson &.J£ey$a manufacture hubs, spokes, feU loes, plow'handles and all bent work for carriages and wagons. Their manufactory is located on the corner of First and Pofclftr 8treete, in the building formerly known as the "Wallace Foundry." The building is 76 by 95 feet,- two and a .half ptories high and is admirably adapted to ^he busings, far which i{ is now occu ^ied/'it is filled with the best machinery that can be obtained, and is the .most complete of any similar manufactory In the State,-except one at Indianapolis: |and this excels in but one particular".

The machinery is such that cheap labor can be employed in nearly all departments, and in this cheap wooden country they can easily compete with eastern manufacturers.— For instance, they have a machine for turning wagon hubs by which orieman can turn out eighty set of wagon hubs a day, and with two other machines two men cap mortice the same number. A log ten foot in length can he taken in at one door and in -fifteen minutes pass out at another as finished hubs, ready for the market—with the exception of kiln-drying and painting.

The machinery, worth from $25,000 to $30,000 is driven by an engine of fortyhorse power. It afffltdB more power than is now required, but tho proprietors deem edit wise and economy to erect such an engine so that machinery can constantly be added. They started three and a half years ago with about half the present capacity. They expect .bv next summer to be doing one-third more work. Among other things $ey will add the manufacture ot wheels complete. They now make all the woodwork of a wheel, and only lack putting it together.

Employment is, given now to thirty men—two years hence they expect to afford employment to over two hundred

Of course a* considerable amount of timber is used. It is obtained in this immediate vicinity, and it is no uncommon thing, especially on a Saturday afternoon to^ee twenty wagons come into tbe yard at one time loaded with timber Of hub timber they use about three hundred and fifty feet per day, and as much more for other articles. For wagon hubs oak is used elm is used for buggy hubs, For buggy spokes they use largely second-growth hickory, which cannot be split. Few manufacturers do this, but Mossrs. Thompson & Keys are determin ed to use tho very best stock, and it pays to do so, as their order book shows. They have orders often from one to four months ahead, so great 'is the demand for their work that they can not keep up with present facilities. Among other large unfilled orders we were shown one front-Topping & Brother, Alton, Ills., for 2,700 sets of hubs and as many sets of spokes. A firm at St. Louis wanted 1,500 set ot hubs, and soon. Much of the stock goes south, but the largest por tion goes west to Illinois, St. Louis and even Western Missouri, where wood is scarce. Hence there eenms to be an actual necessity for such a manufactory right hero on the western border of wooden country.

To ftiPBSird City oj Terrc Haute: GENTLEMEN*- Imny last annual report your attention was directed to the

of

Besides the manufacture of wagon and carriage material, they are largely in manufacturing plow handles, tnd these they often fill in orders of twenty thousand. Mr. Keyes exhibited a machine for smoothing plow hundles— one of his own invention—which works admirably and expeditiously the han dies thus finished, giving, we are inform^ ed, better satisfaction than any others manufactured in the west.

The waste wood, beside that required for'h^ating and for -feeding the engine furnace, amounts to four of five cords a week, and is sold cheap as stove wood, delivered anywhere in the city.

The establishment has capacity for turning out the wook-work for the wheels of eighty wagons and buggies, beside plow-handles and bent work in quantities to supply the demand. Their stock on hand does not appear to amount to anything, And yet we were told there was flfen five to ten thousand dollars' worth in the house. They have had the experience of all other new manufactories. The beginning was not as soocepsful and prosperous as desired, but they have altered and added the newest and best machinery, by which cheap labor can be employed, thus bridging.down tbe .cost, so that now with a good margin of profit they c&n compete with any manufactory in the country.

In the above we have only given a few items in regard to the business carried on by Messrs. Thompsoto & Keyes. Our knowledge of machinery will not permit a detailed description of the many ingenious and complicated machines used.

We want many more such manufactories with just such energetic and enterprisipg mon at the head of them, and giving employment to that class of the community which are the salvation of the country.- Let manufactories be multiplied,, for they are the true wealth of any
