Taa people expect that the next administration will see that there is retrench ment atld economy In every department of Government and In this they will not be disappointed. In a recent conversation it is reported that Gen. Grant took occasion to My that he should effect thi* reform.
TBS comic papers of Buenos Ayres are after Mr. Washburk. He is pictorial ized as running off in a panic, with car pet-bag and umbrella in hand. Let them smile, Mr. Washbubv, People will laugh, even when a fellow rushes into the street from a burning house in his night-shirt.
The official vote of the State, for Presidential Electors, as given in the Indianapolis
and published elsewhere
in this paper, shows a majority for Gbaxt of 10,072. The
Sentinel

puts
Grant's majority at 9,564. We are unable to explain the discrepancy, but presume the
is correct. As there
are many bets pending on ten thousand majority, the difference between the two statements is of very material importance, and is becoming quite interesting.

Although the revolutionary struggle in Cuba seems to be somewhat more seri ous than it was at firsts supposed to be there are as yet no indications of ultimate success. As is usual when Spaniards Southerners or Mexicans fight on either side, it is utterly impossible to extract the truth from a comparison of the conflict' ing stories. Some people do so much of their heavy fighting in bulletins and pro nnnciamentos that one can never tell whether they have really burned any ponder 05 not. In Cuba, both sides pretend to have everything their own way, which is the Spanish method, but a comparison of admitted incidents in the conflict gives the impression that the force of the insurrection has Well nigh exhausted itself. Whatever tnay happen in Cuba, we most ardently hope that no meddling SrwARB or Johnboh wfli embroil thlp country in the affair. It will be years before the United States can afford to an dertake the solution 6f another problem, social, Industrial and political, such as the possession of Cuba would involve.— We have twelve States in/need of atten* tion alre^ Jr ^at^hat^

AMONG the varied eensations which have contributed,to. mitigate the in flu et)ce of universal emui since the culmin a tion of the election excitement, one of the most noteworty was the Convention hcSd in Boston in the interest of woman suffrage. We believe the number of wOmon in this country who really have any jatefecl ia- jhis movenaieBt is yery smiall. It is doubtful if it exceeds the uslial fern ale attendance, as delegates at this Convention, and the Conventions which have preceded it, of the same character. The number of women in the country who desire to be voters, if we may judge by the apparent interest in the subject, might, by groat vigilance in collecting names, be exteneed to a hun* dred. Lucy Stonk Blackwell, Cadt Stanton, Julia Ward Howb, and few more, constitute the rank and file of the party. They are to be found in all thise Conventions, and although they assume to represent the women of this country, they really represent nobody but themselves

So far as tangible evidence is concern* ed, nothing can be adduced to show that ti women of America have any desire to ineddle with politics, or that they have on4 particle of sympathy or fellowship with these strong-minded intermeddlers Thb true woman instinctively shrinks fro in the roughness, excitement and pas' sions of political life. Her home is ber empire, and she has no desire to be a leader in affairs of State. She knows that she-would uusex herself in becoming politician, and instead of being considered by taan a creature to love and cherish, she would be too often regarded as a political enemy, to be used roughly and to be treated as if she were unloveable.
