The Opeba.—There was fully aB large an audience at Dowling Hall last nigbt -as on the evening previous, and "Faust" Was rendered in a manner as to elicit the highest'admiration from the enthusiastic audience. The singing and acting of Marie Friederici as Marguriette, Himmer as Faiut, and Weinleich as Mephistophelee, called forth frequent bursts of apglause from an audience not given to bestowing such reward, unless there is something worthy of merit. At the conclusion of the third act Friederici was taken suddenly ill and could not appear. The disappointed audience was given, instead of the conclusion of 'Faust," the last act of "Stradella." The management certainly have no cause to complain of the patronage bestowed by our people, the sale of tickets for the two evenings amifeiitfng to about six hundred
dollars.

Laugh.—An exchange gives rules for anew art of reading the character of a person by his-stylp jof laughing. We are told that "Ha, ha," indicates that the laugher is frank, fickle, fond of noise, and nervous. Phlegmatic and melancholy persons laugh thus: "He, he, he." When you hear a man laugh "Ho, ho, ho," it betokens generous sentiments, and firmness in his actions, but, it is added, beware of a woman who uses tb is vowel in laughing. "He, he, he," is the laugh of children and innocent persons, and denotes a nature pliable, devoted, but timid and irresolute. Blondes also laugh thus, but we are warned that such are not all innocent. AvQid like the plague all who laugh "flu, hui'f. They are avaricious, hypocritical, misanthropic, and take pleasure in noth-

our rapidly growing city. A gentleman prominently connected with public affairs of the city, is of opinion that if such an Institution was in existence, all the vagrants, men, women a&d boys, who are how either sent to the poor asylum, jail 6r ported by the county treasury, might be made to support themselves by being confined in a work house and compelled to labor. The extraordinary expenses incurred by the county every year on account of this class of persons would seem to demand some remedy, and tbat too, very quickly.
