A CORRESPONDENT writes to the New

York <Tribune>, that the Pacific Railroad

will run 40 miles north of Salt Lake City because Brigham Young doesn't want such a Gentile contrivance running through his capital. If so, he shows his usual sagacity. Our opinion in the premises is not worth much but we think the great world's highway is shortened this avoidance of the Mormon Zion =====

In our lustjissue we called attentioi ig the gross iuji|lice perpetrated upon the colored tax payew of Ifcis Stste, in requiring them to contribute to the support of our public schools, from which their children are excluded. We do not propose that the prejudices of caste shall be vior lated by the Admission of colored children to our public schools, nor do we understand that the colored people of the State make any each demand. They prefer that their children shall be educated in colored schools, and they are showing very great liberality in the maintenance of such schools. In this county there are several graduates from 9berlin engaged in teaching the .^.colored youth. Thl^ir schools are well conducted,, and their piipils are advancing in their studies at about the same rate of progress as is observed in our public. Schools of simitar grades.

But while tbe parents of th&e children are thus giving them these advantages for the acquisition ol knowledge, they are also paying taxes for the education of white children. They draw not one cent from the school fund, nor is a single penny of the annual levy for educational purposes devoted to their benefit. "A State which has the magnificent fund of $7*000,000 for public instruction, is yet guilty of the unparelled meanness of not only excluding the children of colored parents from any participancy in its benefits, but of taxing those parentsr fore* ing them to Contribute for the education of white children.

You may 3earch the statutes of every State in the Union, and you will Arid no legal outrage that parallels this. Every honest man must feel a sense of shame to think that any portion of the money which educates his children, is obtained by such means. It is disgrace to the christian civilization of the age, a burning shame to the fair same of our State, and it calls loudly for redress. Tho Legislature should see to it that those colored peoplo have their share, pro rata, of the school money, expended under the direction 6f tho Department of Pablie Instruclioti, for the .tiduraiisu of colored children. This is right, and the Republican majority inirthe, General Assembly can afford to do right.

Think of tnis great Commonwealth, compelling negroes to help support schools for white children, while it refuses a single penny from its munificent fund, or illiberal levies, to educate tho blacks! But, it may be said, "the blacks are poor, and don't pay much taxes.'' If such were the casej there would be tho greater rea» son why they should share in the school fund and levies, and why they should not be compelled to pay anything for .white education. But the truth is, there are many heavy tax-payers among tho blacks in this State. In this county some of our wealthy and prosperous farmers are blacks. Thoy are taxed, to day, to educate the white children of the county, whilo the education of their own children is left to their own direction and their own expense.

OUR CHICAGO LETTER.

(.'ottespondetco Daily Txpresi.

Tho excitement engendered during the reoent political campaign, has measurably subsided, and the people have once more turned their attention to the ordinary affairs of the world. Business is resuming its accustomed.channels. Professional men, mechanics, and laboring men have again donned the old harness, and gone to work in their various pursuits. Even loafers and all sorts of professional idlers are mado sensitive to tho precariousness of their "bread and butter" supply by the resuming din of universal industry. Politicians whose fortune or fall has been determined, know the result, and, conscious of their inability to avert the fate, when it might be desirable, becomingly acquiesce in the new order. And so is life. During tbe great and truly important political contests in which communities are so frequently involved, men are very likely to forget individuality in the height of general enthusiasm. But there is always a reaction, and sooner or later, the stern realities of life that affect individuals, loom hp above all other considerations. It & gratifying that the reeult of the recent election is so generally accepted with cheerfulness. 1 I

Chicago has a bad reputation, ft is spoken of as the most sinful and immoral city in tbe "West, as the stronghold of every kind of wickedness, and there may be a degree of truth in thesJT rumofsT" It excels in nearly every other respect its sister cities and why not fn this Bat, with all her errors, what Western man doesn't feel proud of the Garden City In a former letter the vote of the city at the Presidential election was referred to as indicating the population to be 238,260.

This month will average about the same. There have been no very destructive fires for some tube.

Thefe fr" much activity in telegraphic circle#.., The "Western Union," has had a1 almot exclasi^ monopoly of the whole country, but is likely tv lose some «f its prestige Rival lines-aroapriafiag apja every direction, and unless they are shortly swallowed up, as has been the fate of pre* vious like enterprises the last few year? tbey wfill soon prove formidable rivals.— It fs a noticeabk- feature of the" lines now constructing, that they axe built well, as if for permanence. The "United States" lines which were sold out a year or b? since, were cheaply constructed purposely to be sold at a speculation. Among the rival lines now converging into this city, are tho "Atlantic & Pacific," which has two wires running to New York, and others are being, strung The "Mississippi Valley," which extends from New Orleans to St. Paul, Minn., and runs branch from Dubuque to Chicago, and the "Great Western," which is now working between this city and Milwatl. kee,and is now distributing poles through out the Northwest for a thousand miles of wire. The poles will- be set as soon as the frost is out of th.j ground in the Spring."

Another company, the ''Pacific A Atlantic," is building in from Cincinnati, and will connect with New York via Philadelphia. The "Atlantic & Pacific" talk of extending their Wires westward and connecting with tbe California line. When all those, and other prospective lines are completed a lively competition may be looked for. Bates between this city ai.d New York have .jslready been reduced. s1 a Is

The •'Metropolitan Telegraph, a purely local institution, has offices throughout the city, and is doing a fair business- It was»orgauized last Spring, and has proven a great benefit to the business community The tariff id fifteen cents for ten words or under, and one c^nt for each added word. Other oceanic wires are to be laid. Truly the greatest and most magic enterprise of the age is being pusbed forward with extraordinary vigor.

Dealers and speculators in mud-holes and swamps are come to grief It has been the custom of Real Estate dealers' the last year, to go up to their offices every morning and mark up prices about ten per centum, but now it is exactly the reverse. They have to substract instead of add tbe per cent. Money is rather cleflo, and-speculation has come to an actual "stand still'" There has been no decline in good lots, either in the city or within a reasonable distance of the limits. In fact, this class ot property is as firm as ever, though there is less changing of hands, but the andesirable low marshy ground is decidedly lower, and even unsaleable at the decline. It is predicted that some parties who have invested heavily in this property, buying on partial payment and expecting to make sales before balances came due, will be obliged to relinquish title to the original owners.

The pork packers are maBlng consid», erablestir. A good many are in operation already, but work very light. The receipts of hogs at the Union Stoclr Yards are pretty heavy, but the prioe tends downward and operators are afraid to invest liberally. Hogs are bringing $7.00 to $7.60, but will be lower. The market for beef cattle is firm on account of a light supply. $ J.»

Forney's Press calls the attention of Democratic journals, which refused to publish the fact that the national indebtedness for the last month had decreased some $7,000,000, to the additional fact that by reason of tbe rigid system of retrenchment insisted upon by Congress, the expenditure of the Ordnance Bureau for tbe last year only amounts to $3,092,000,or less than three-fifths of theexpenditure qf the previous year. This may seriously impair their charges of extravagance, but tbey can gain nothing now by irsisting upon falsehood.
