the ordisr of Deaconess is not so much of a novelty among Protestants abroad as in this country. There is an institution at DusseldorsT Prussia, established by tho celebrated Pastor Fridner, for the training of these Deaconessee, who resemble in many respeots the Catholic "Sisters of Charity." They wear a neat uniform, re semblingthe dress of Quaker ladies. They haveqeen found especially useful as sistants to foreign missionaries. In the first of these Deaconesses arrived at Jerusalem, on the invitation of Bishop Cobat, and soon proved that they were invaluable assistants to the Bishop and to the physicians of the English hospital at Jerusalem. Since that time the Des conesses have been, established in many of the Basteru-eifcies, and in other parts of the world.
Paris paper says: "Every year on the same day, at the same hour, a beautiful woman of about 35 comes to the Palais Royal on foot, and enters the famous •Freres ProVencaux.' She is always alone, always dressed in black, and deeply veiled she- wears no ornament that might at tract attention, no jewels save two beautiful black pearls in her ears. Without saying a word to any one she. walks quickly up the stairs and enters the private room No. 4. The proprietor of the establishment,'who knows her ways, orders her dinner, consisting always ot the same dishes. These are all placed upon the table at the same time, and the mys teriouslady is left to''herself for about two hours. No bill is made out the unknown visitor leaves one of her pearl 'ear-rings in payment. For twelve years We are told, she has come this way, al
