Official Bcport of the Condition of the

j*

Wheat.—It

Oats.—The

d*

sued a report on the conditon of the crops in October.

says that the full erop

promised in the early summer has not been realized in the wheat harvest. The increase of area over that of last year in its effect on the aggregate production is nearly neutralized by a diminution of some of the principal wheat-growing States, in yield per acre, so that the increase in the total quantity, as shown by the October returns, ia scarcely more than three per cent., and that is obtained mainly from the Pacific coast. Averages from October appear to show a decrease in production in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Texas, the latter having only half a crop. The other States Indicate an increase. In most of those east of Mississippi very slight, in Minnesota thirteen per cent., Iowa six per cent., Missouri eight per cent., Nebraska thirteen per cent., Kansas twenty-three per cent., and California twenty-five per cent. Many persons in different parts of the country, especially in Maryland and Wisconsin, report a disproportionment in the yield of grain in thrashing.

oats crop is light in the

Eastern, Middle and Southern Atlantic States, and not a full average in Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa. InotherStates the product is above the average, the largest increase being twenty-one per cent,

Nebraska.

Cobn.—-Considerable

to the corn crop is reported in Northern Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and in the more northern latitudes. In some parts of Iowa an estimate of two-fifth of soft corn is made. From Southern Indiana, Southern Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania, come complaints of immaturity, in consequence of wet weather, and accounts of iDjury from drought are received. No general or very severe droughts have been reported. The total product will not be what was hoped, in the early season, or what is needed for the country, with our rapidly increasing population, but somewhat larger in quantity than last year, which was a season peeuliarly adverse to corn production.

area of cotton is some

what less than last year, but the culture has been better and the preparation for planting more complete, as a general rule. Early in the season the promise was fine. SeriouB losses have of late been incurred, however, principally from depredations of the cotton caterpillar, or army worm, which have proved more general and severe in Georgia than elsewhere. They are very troblesome in portions of Alabama and Mississippi, and somewhat prevalent in the Carolines and Arkansas. Heavy rains in Tennessee and the Southwest have caused some anxiety, but have done less damage than was expected. Returns indicate a smaller crop, possibly by fifteen or twenty per cent, than last year, but a complete estimate will not be made till the crop is gathered.

Other Articles—Peasand

be nearly an average crop. Buckwheat is very generally deficient. Connecticut, New Jersey, Minnessota, California and some Southern States furnish favorable exceptions. Sorgum has been more suecesslul than last year in Southern New England, New Jersey, Delaware, the Gulf States and California. Potatoes are reported at a full average crop, with a deficiency of ten per cent- in New York and Pennsylvania, from three to seven per cent, in the Southern Atlantic States and Tennessee, twenty per cent, in Illinois ten par cent in Iowa, eleven per cent, in Indiana fifteeo per cent, in Ohio, sixteen per cent, in Michigan, and a greater or less reduction in other Western States. Beturns from Louisianna indicate an increase of twentytwo per cent, over last year in the sugarcane. The amount of old wheat on hand is somewhat less than usual throughout the country, with the exception of the cotton States, which have a higher average than last year. This remark will not apply to Texas, where the grainaries are uniformly empty. The quantity left over in Wisconsin is relatively somewhat lower than in the neighboring States.

The stock of beeves in preparation for market is larger than last year, west and south of New Jersey, except in Indiana and Illinois, which States constitute an important beef-producing section. The deficiency in Illinois is placed at five per cent., and in Indiana at five per cent. The condition of the fattening cattle, almost universally, is of a superior character, giving promise of better and larger meat supplies than usual.

Tbe Momisd Boilders of Tennessee.

An interesting lecture was recently delivered in JNashville, by Dr. Joseph Jones, on the Tennessee mounds and their build* ers. In many parts of Tennessee are found large artificial mounds, the product of a race of people very different from the savages who were familiar to the early settlers. These relics have often excited the curiosity of those who saw and examined them. During the war, when the State was in the handB of the Union forces, the excavation made at Chattanooga," (Knoxville, Murfreesbore and Nashville revealed a great many curious remains, which were carried away to the North.

Dr. Jones bdgun a series of explorations a year ago, and has succeeded in collecting and classifying a remarkable array of relics and remains. In Giles county be discovered the remains of a great chief, buried with numerous relics, and around him the skeletons of some of his-subjecta. Drifting into the sides of the artificial mounds, ashes, bits of pottery, and bones of both human beings and animals were found, mixed up in one incongruous conglomeration, often with beautiful specimens of vases and shell ornaments. He also found large stone idols carved oat of a dark iron colored rock, the largest some thirteen inches in height, and the others perhaps four inches lees in stature. One represented a female, with the hair gathered up behind in a sort of a waterfall, while in the longer specimen, that of a males the hair was represented twisted into a sort of oue, not nlUtllki style of

-r mmm* mlwi*

forefather, in the Revolutionary reat mound near Frank*

not unlike a child's foot, witju. the open ing at the heel, and tho ottet -torinounlad with a carved head, with a halmet, having a remarkable resemblance to that of aSpiuiish cavalier. Here wasal«ofound the girei at/in of a child, the face of which was covered with a curious shell bearing occult hieroglyphic^, among which could be distinguished perfect triangles.

Many other curious relics were discov-

l^red by Dr. JoneB, who «%oed from the

remains tha^the

nal race of mound builders had come in

continent, and also that they must

have

communication with the later

Spanish niuipnirios. The Tennessee mound builders, the Doctor thinks, must certainly belonged to the great Natchez tribe, who, coming from the South, spread themselves throa^iout the Valley of the Mississippi and its larger branches.

Dr. Jones will soon publish a book on the antiquities of Tennessee, in which the origin and history of these singular mounds will be discussed in detail.
