*1

THB REPUBLICAN EXFOUWV* COMMITTEE OF VIGO COUNTT.

To the Republican voters of Vigo County.—

The Presidential election on next Tuesday is BO important, in all its bearings upon the future happiness and peace of the country, that we venture to address you a few words of admonition in reference to it. If, from any cause, any portion of us should fail to discharge our entire duty, and the Government should thereby, pass into the hands of those who are now in open and avowed alliance with the

rebel6 of tbe South,

we should hereafter most deeply regret it We, therefore, urge

every one

of you to

go to the polls, on Tuesday and east your votes tor Grant and Oolfax, and thus aid ia keeping the Government upon the right track—upon the track that will lead to honorable and permanent peaee.

Heed not the perpetual cry of a violated constitution and a destroyed Government made by our adversaries. This, with them, is the logical result of admitting in behalf of the rebels, that the Government had no power to preserve its own life, by putting down the rebellion. If this doctrine be admitted, as they claim it, and the Government be turned over to them, secession may become, in the future, so far consummated as to terminate the existence of the Union. They deny the constitutional power of tbe National Government to

"coerce a State."

With Seymour and Blair as President and Vice President, the Southern States therefore, would have nothing to do, in order to break up tbe Union, but to repass their ordinances of secession. Mr. Seymour would not call out the army to put down a rebellion thus begun, because he and his friends say such an act would be unconstitutional. They arraigned Mr. Lincoln for doing it, and charged him with violating the Constitution in that and everything else done by him to support the loyal cause and maintain tbe Union. Their policy of inaction, therefore, would enable the seceding States to set up an independent government, hostile to the Union, and to maintain it, if necessary, by alliances with Great Britain and France, both of which governments stand ready to aid in overthrowing our popular institutions, that they may, thereby, perpetuate the

"divine

The principal plank in the Democratic platform embodies the doctrine of nullification, which, wben accompanied with an overt act, was denounced by Geaeral Jackson as

treason.

It declares acts of

Congress, passed pursuant to all the forms of the Constitution, to be

"revolutionary,

unconstitutional and void,"

"Due

and proposes

so to treat them, and to disregard then entirely, even before they have been passed upon by the Judicial DepartmentsAnd the Democratic candidate for the Vice Presidency goes one step further, and avows that if is the duty of tbe President, if one of that party shall be elected, to trample them under his feet. If the President can do this, as to these laws, why may he not do so as to all laws? and thus make himself a despot, governing the nation by his single will

The government has not been destroyed, because the Bepublican party, by supporting and maintaining our gallant army, has preserved it from destruction,— With Grant and Colfax at the helm, it wi'.l still be preserved against every foe— whether at home or abroad. Tbe duty therefore, of every Bepublican is, to be certain to go to the polls and vote for these great standard-bearers of the party If this duty shall be discharged, faithfully, there can be no doubt of the result. Victory, most triumphant will perch upon our banners.

In behalf, then, of the most sacred oause that ever called forth the energies of any political party since our Government was formed—in behalf of a Constitution already imperrilled, and of a Union already theatened, we admonish you to be active and prompt, and to give

to your country. Fail not ift

this, and we shall achieve such a victory as was never achieved before one that will plant the foundations of oar Government too firmly to_ be_ev®r hereafter a I

In behalf of the Executive Committee Litres A. BUBNXTT, Chairman.

"THE ISSUE.

Address by

N*w Yosx, October 27.—The Bepiib llcan National Committee ha* issued the following address "N*w Toax,October 28. "FlLLOW-CXTUens—On the 3d of November you are to register a decision at the ballot-box whieh will control the Government for four years, and affect the deetiniaa of the country for all .time. The Desaocratie party, enter iag into the campaign with practical repudiation on its banner, and a determination to open the qusatioo of re construction, ty declaring all aota relatid, has met t&k ^g&al de* ing thereto

purposelfM^ tie

cUred' iii its plA^bnn. Be not deceived T&e mein who met in Kaw York on the 4th of July lm«wrh»k they: yUeod«d to do, if they could carry the. election. To inspire their followers in tbe South and then friends and aympathizaro at the Korth, tbey pnbliBhed their purpose to tbe mffidi On thia dbclantion tb«y into tbe canvass, and, although

a* tried-.to explain away iu full meanings they never denied it until beaten at the polls. No change of candidates can change their purpoae. They clean to t« ir» from an enfranchised nee it* only safeguard, the ballot: they mean to repudiate the national debt, incurred at a tima of greatest danger to the nation, or, at best, pay it in a manner which will tarnish the national credit, and make the great Bepublic a shame to honest men and a by-word in the financial ciroles of the world. The Presidential candidate of the Democracy declares that his purpose will be to hold Congress in check for four ears to come, as Andrew Johnson has for four years past, and thus to Stand in his position. "Fellow-citizens, tbe country wants peace it has had enough of opposition, from executive to the legislative department. The people elect botb, and mean to have harmony and good-will between them. The loss of the States holding elections in October has shown the Democratic leaders that they can hope to carry no Northern State. In desperation they call upon the people to come to the rescue. They place Mr. Seymour on the stump, and meditate the withdrawal of Mr. Blair, who has too openly and boldly proclaimed their true aims and purposes, and tardily^ay they mean peace and obedience t^the laws. But the spirit that really animates them may be seen in the attempts to carry the elections by fraud, on a gigantic scale at the North, and by intimidation, violence and murder at the South. "We appeal to the people who stood by the Union in her darkest hours, whose faith has never faltered, who have never believed the war a failure, or that those who stimulated the rebellion are the proper persons to administer the Government they sought to destroy and we ask them to rally once more, and, by an overwhelming majority, show the Democratic party, and the world, th$Jjt there is no hope for the lost cause. "No one doubts the patriotism of General Grant. He has already announced his desire for peace. This is no idle word. His election will be the guarantee of harmony in the different departments, of energy and economy in its administration, of safety in person and property to the citizen every where, and boundless prosperity following in the train of peace.
