THE closeness of the recent contest indicates plainly that the present is no time to relax our efforts. We want unremitting work from this morning until six o'clock in the evening of the third of November. Don't count on Democratic de« moralization. That party will always do more voting than any party -o#r"its size that ever existed. Nothing, but hard, in cessant work will ever defeat it 1

FATAL ACCIDENT.—Jas. P. Kelley, an Irishman of advanced- age, who resided at the corner of Fourth and Mulberry Sts., was instantly killed yesterday morning .under the following circumstances: He was engaged in drawing gravel from the pit north of tbe city and,' by some means not well understood, was thrown from his seat oh the wagon, falling in front of tbe forward wheels, one of which passed over his neck. The hind wheel also passed along until It rested on his neck, when the team stopped. When the driver of the next team came up he found Mr. Kelley in the condition above described, dead, his neck having been broken. Thedeceas ed bad a large circle of acquaintances, among whom he was highly respected as a worthy, honest and industrious man. Ho leaves a family to mourn his sudden death.
A GOOD' MOVEMENT.—We menlionei in our issue' of Monday last that one of the -tiapviest losars by the fire at the Bun^in Souse, last Sunday, was Prof. A. Shide, he having lost everything he had except the clothes he had on. He was especially unfortunate in the loss of a fine and lajgfr musical library which he had been engaged, in collecting for a number of years. Mr. Shide came herefrom Memph is, $fh aeskee, some six months ago, as successor to Prof. Meininger, and during his short stay has gained a holt of friends. We are therefore happy to see, that the Terre- Haute Idfaennerchor, of which society he is a leading jnember, have tendered him a beneficiary concert, to take place on Tuesday evening next, at Dowling Hall. Our liberal-minded fcitiiaens, we afewrej will give him a^full house. To-morrow we will publish pm. gramme and particulars.

Martinsville has again been made the theater of another revolting murder. On last Wednesday evening while the town boys were building a bonfire on the west side of the public square, in honor of the result of the election, a row occurred on Piercy's corner—how, we do not know, —in which Joe Baldwin aged about 17, was stabbed to the heart by Bill Miles, aged about 18. The excitement.at once became most intense, and a general riot and lynch law seemed inevitable. Miles was immediately apprehended and lodged in jail by Deputy Sheriff Kennedy, whither tbe crowd followed, threatening vengeance. But for the interposition of citizens disposed to favor peace and moderation, there is no telling what the result might have been. There are a thousand rumors afloat as to the origin of this sad affair, the responsible parties, instigators, politics, etc., but for prudential reasons, we forbear commenting, hoping that all the facts may be brought out upon legally investigating the case.—Martinsville Gazette.
