"The late massacre at Fort Pillow, by Forrest, seems to have filled the community with indignation and surprise. To thoaej in the front of our armies who know Forrest, there is nothing astonishing in bis conduct at Fort Pillow. I know that this very much respected Confedeaatebero has upon former occassiono, condescended to become his own execu« tiocer. "To show the style of the man Jeff Davis and the Confederacy delight to honor, I will relate the following* which was stated to me last summer by a rebel citizen of Middle Tennessee, a man ofkigh standing in his community, who bud it from iiis nephew, an officer serving under Forrest. "About the middle of tho summer of 1862, Forrest surprised the post of MurfrQesborougb, commanded by BrigadierGeneral T. T- Crittenden, of Indiana, The garrison was composed mostly of the Ninth Michigan and Third Minnesota Infantry, and the Seventh Pennsylvania Cavalry. After some little, fighting the troops were surrounded. "A mulatto man, who was a servant to one of the officers of the Union forces, was brought to Forrest on horseback. The latter enquired ot him, with many oaths, what he was doing there. Tbe mulatto answered that he was a free man, and catno out as a servant to an offiicer, naming the man. Forrest, who was on honieback, deliberately put his hand to his holster, drew his pistol, «nd blew the man's brains out. "The Mbel officer stated that the mu latto man came from Pennsyiv ania and tho same officer denounced the act as one of cold-blooded murder, and declared he would never again serve under Forrest. ''This murdered man was not a soldier, and, indeed, the occurrence took place before the United States Government determined to arm negroes. Of the truth of this there is not a shadow of doubt, as it can be established any day by living Besses-.--"Your obedient servant, (Signed) D. L. Stanley, Maj. General."
