"I AVFrom St. LOUIb. Louis, Oct. 5.—The eighth annual Fair of the St. Louis Agricultural and Mechanical Association opened to day under the most favorable auspices. The wa&ther was charming and attendance unusually large for the first day.

All the departments are filled to overflowing and present an extraordinary fine appearance.

The new brick buildings of monster size which the association have erected forsthe mechanical and machinery departments are crowded almost bey?nd thdir capacity, and a largo portion of the grounds is filled with agricultural, i^v pigments from all parts of the cauDtt^-a m&racing tibanyji^w and valu.s^le in,

The Art Hall and Textile departments aro superior in every respect to those -of last year, the latter particularly, being crowded^ to excess.

The floral display this year is in the shape of a most beautiful landscape, occupying a large part of the soatherif sMfe'of thai grounds, embracing a miniature lake dotted with islands covered with growing flowers and trees, grottoes with miniature fountains, rustic arbors and flllod with the choicest flowers, and bridges, grpen lawns&c, &c, the whole presenting one of the most charming scenes imaginable. Thk poultry, swine and sheep departments are unusually large, .and filled with the best representations of their class, ever brought here. The exhibitions fn the rin£ were very fine, and consisted of draft stallions, geldings and mares of different 0b. E. Dillon & Co.„of Bloomington, linois, Grant and Strong of flarrtetown, Illinois, and Davis and Patrick, of Bunker Hill, being among the successful competitors. Several jptoorfed hqraes of this class belonging to JeffK. Clark, of St. Louis county, attracted much attention and received a premium. The premiums for matched carriage and buggy horses geueratyyj -went to St. jLouis men, the entries from the country not being able to success (Hilly compete with the fine and valuable, hortur of our city gentlemea. The performances of the day closed with the' amusing feature of a mule race, the slowest animal to have the priae. 'n
