... Unrequited love, ir 4 The sad est, most humiliating case of unr^gui.ted..%v|, .ever presented at any time] befor^-aViy' people, is how paraded before the people of this Congressional District in tbe case of D. W, VOORHE4s who goes up and down fropi Mitchell to Perry ville, from Bloomingtpn to Merom hypocritically^ sniveling at the sight of blue coat, weeping on the highways and in tbe street corners at the mention of an qptpty sleeve, and bloviating in tbe most ostentatious manner of the deep, intense aad abiding love be i&s alW£|s botnfl for tbe Boys in Bltie. ,4.
It is sad to contemplate this immense but unavailing outlay of muscle and tears Though he travels like a second
and pours out the lachrymal flood likei reviifea editWn of NioBK, jet never a Boy in Blue feelB moved in bis heart to respond with a single answering throb of affection.
And why 1 Simply because the soldiers are not Idiots.,
Thoy know that the man who was the most persistent and relentless enemy of tbo cause for which they fought and bled for which their comrades died, could not have been and cannot be their friend.
They remember the record of this man' public acts and utterances, and they search it in vain from the inauguration of the war, in December, 1860, to the hour when the last rebel laid down his arms, to find one word that he ever spoke, or one act he ever performed, that exhibited any' thing but bitter hostility to his govern ment and intense-hatred of the came of the Union.
They know that bis speeches gave hope to the rebels and thereby prolonged the sanguinary Btrife, thus placing upon bis soul the awful responsibility of the sacri fice ofmany a patriot's life
They know that, more than three months after thb wir began, he took for his motto, and gave the same motto to bis friends "Not one man, not one dollar, not one gun .jwith which to carry death and desolation to Southern firesides."
They remeoSber the Hardesty letter, promising one hundred thousand men to defend the South, and they hear, In imag' Ination, the shrHl^ rebel yell with which that letter was greeted by rebel battalions when it was promulgated in. general orders and read at evening parade.
They remember thftt speech at Sullivan in which this man—forgetful of the dead and dying soldiers of the Union and their surviving1- comrades who were then appealing for help to drive back the ex* ultont enemy—boasted of tbe prowess ot the "eight milliooB of brave Cau^^§ps" whe could not be conquered."
They remember his advice about those iron collars."
They remember who it was that went through the old Seventh District flaunting a greenback in tbe faces of the people and telling them that in six months it would not be worth any more than t)onfedernte scrip,
They have a clear recollection that iu the dark days oTt^e gloomiest period of tho war-, YooRBKia, then in Congress, was asked tg vote "Uiat our ttawtlf: iir® tordercd to our soldiers in the Held for fheir gallantry in dqiending andf upholding the tiag'of tho tfbion,' and defending the great principlwdear to every American patriot," and that he answered, "aoi" thus declaring that "&othatik» were due" the Boys in Blue, lor "carrying death nd destructipg to Soather$ firesides."
Tbeso soldier boys also bear in mind that
we hold it to be the duty of Congress to pass alt necessary bills to supply men and money, and tbe duty of the people to render every aid in their poWeT to the constituted authorities of the Government in the crushing oat of the rebellion and In bringing the leaders thereof to Oobdign punishment,-' and that when asked thus to vote, his eloquent voice thundered back 'No I' thus deeping "It is not the duty ot Congress to supply mea and moaty," "it is not the duty of the paople to render
irtry aid in their poWfer to the conMltutad authorities of the Goverwaenfe In the crushing out of we rsbelliSi bringing the leaders thereof to condign giumlupsnt^
These area few of the reflections whidh the name- of VooBHBM suggests to the mind of a soldier and these area few of the reasons why they despise his professions of IoveT 'Tn as much as you were the Seoy of the cause for which we foogS^ you wate our enemy," they say. "We can forgive the open enemies whom we fought and conquered in th^ field, but we never can and never will forgive the sneaking political scoundrels who stirred up strife at the rear, the contemptible poltroons whose sympathies were with the tobels and, whom base cowardice alone prevented from taking up arms in the rebil"rankB."
Iforaee fireeley on the Sooth. Mr.
Irishman.
And they we»er
whose craven
lips uttered the words, Lincoln Dogs." They bear in mind that when their rank's were thinned by death and they called for help, Yoobhses, instead of iding them men, did his utmost to keep back reinforcements—but sent them instead, a speech against tbe government a speech so very patriotic I
couldn't circulate it without getting arretted. Tbay remember that he tried with all bis powerB of mind and heart, to destroy the credit of the government, to close ev.ery avenue by which money could flow into the treasury.
Our
a rStber hopeful view of the future of the South: But let no one fear that the crimes whereof the South is now the arena and the viptinrcanjlnally triumph. In all the dark days of Kansas, hardly twelve years ago, when Leavenworth was seised by armed rufflans from Missouri, her noblest citizan- butchered, and all who were known as antislavery men "sent down the river," while the ruffians hold an election and chose their cronies to every municipal office. Remember the burning of the Free State Legislature at Topeka, dispersed by Federal soldiers with loaded cannon and lighted matches and remember ftat this "was the sch ooll wherein Nathaniel Lyon and Edwin Y. Sumner first learned to comprehend and execrate slavery. I cannot deem it probable that the crimes now rampant in the South sballl achieve even a temporary triumph for their contrivers but, if they should, it can only be so ordered that they may invoke a more complete and signal retribution. Slavery, "the sum of all villainies," now writhes under the heel of the Federal Constitution. It must not be expected to die peaceably nor speedily on the contrary, its spirit will infest, will haunt us even after life shall have been expelled from its quivering remains. But the work of Congress has been done so thoroughly that it will be found Impossible ever to reanimate the carcass or give to its last oppressions even the semblance of a renewed legality
The black is no more a chattel he is now in law a man, and must sMhd or fall as his conduct shall determine. There is no more a logical basis for any discrimination by the State between tbe legal rights of one citizen and those of another and such discrimination cannot, in the nature nf things, undure. The child is surely born who shall see this fair, broad land, in every part, ajand of Equal Rights and Equal tws where no man shall be degraded or exalted because of his color or origin wherein every avenuo to fame and fortune shall be open to all alike and whereon each morning's sun shall smile more benigoantly because Justice is the basis, and righteousnes the measure of its
)littcal institutions. A land purged of and Howel Cobbs, and consecrated evermore to Sill humanity, through the universal diffusion of knowledge and virtue, under the segis of universal, lawguarded freedom. gjiiaici."''1 'T 1 little Story.
A story illustrating the position of the Democracy as regards the national debt has its origin not far from the city of Ottawa, Illinois. Bearing in mind the fact that the Democratic party, in every State where they had a majority in the year 1$60," rebelled and attempted to secede from the Union, and thereby caused the expenditure of nearly $4,000,000,000, of which $2,500,000,000 remains in the form of a debt, and that they are now abusing the Republicans on account of it, the point of the'story will be easily perceived
An honest Irishman, perhaps a little too fond of whisky, had a wife, who thrashed him with great regularity, and often sent him to bed without his supper One day he entered the office of a lawyer, to whom his hapless condition had been for some time known, and asked for private consultation, when the following conversation ensued:
-"The ould woman is in jail.'
Lawyer.
"That's lucky."
Irishman.
"Well, yer honor, how shall
we get her out Lawyer.
"What is she sent to jail for
Irishman.
"She's fined fourteen dollars
for breakin a winder, and sent to jail till its paid." 'Latoyea.
"Is it only for breakin a win
dow?" ',-f" Irishman.
"That's all, yer honor, ex
cept this," [taking off his hat and showing a fresh gash on the side of his head.] "Ye see I was sitting in Mr. Mulrooney's grocery, and thftould woman came by and jist heaved ashtone through the winder and took me here."
Lawyer.
"Well Patrick, if you must
get her out the cheapest way is to pay the
Irishman. "But she'll murder me for shqmndherm the money:"—Chicago Tribune.
Sodden death or a Singular Person From tbe Sueqnoh anna (N. Y.) Ind«jeadent. Miss Mary Hurlburt was found dead in her bed September 12. This was the eccentric Miss Aurlburt, from whose person Dr. Sumner, now at Rochester, ex tracted„about ten years since, such an in credible number of needles and pinsmore than three hundred in number She wpuld never give any account of the manner in which they were intro duced whether she swallowed them or thrust them directly into her flesh nor did her friends by watching her ever find out They were found at different times working on the surface of almost every part of the body, but chiefly on the limbs. A lady, who refused to believe the stories about their removal, states that she went to satisfy herself, and saw Dr. Sumner extract nearly fifty from one arm. The girl seemed to be very little affected by the operation.

Minister to England, Mr. Reverdy
Johnson, though unanimously confirmed by our Republican Senate, seems to repay such liberal courtesy by standing aloof from the whole Liberal party in England, and by throwing himself into the arms of a faction which was and is the foe of the United States. From a recent letter from Mr. Roebucks, tbe member of Parliament who always yelled with exultation at the news of rebel victories, Mr. Johnson has been billing and cooing with him, and "usingexpressions of kindness Which touched him very nearly." However, a short six months will terminate this hobnobbing with an American will represent land whose sympathies wor his country throughout her great "struggle, and who knows her friends abroad.— If.
