Voobhees' Friends compelled to Fork Ovbk^-A Democratic "Opinon! of the Revenue Law.—It having comp to the ears of our wide-awake Assessor that two men, Baker and Stewart, from itear {JentrevHIe "in VIgS county, were peddling liquor without Government license ftt th'e Voorhees meetings, he went to Stanford", on the day Voorhees was posted at that point, and after having jeen fcthe l.iquor peddlers sell a number of annks, asked them to exhibit a collector'! receipt. Thisjtheyjwere, of course, unable to do and to the demand of the Assessor that they should pay the proportion of the: $50 Vidtehso due that time ($33.33) they very enaphatically demurred. At this juncture up stepped Eugeno I. Hoi den, (one of Daniel Yoorheeg' traveling companions) who arrogantly demandec: that the Aseessor should tell him who he was, and what right he had to molest those men, or interrupt their traffic. The As' aessor quietly informed him, and exhibited the law upon the subject. At this, Mr. Eugene JL. Holden, Adjutant of the White Boys in-Blue of the State of Indi ana, exclaimed pointing to the Revenue Law: "It -is unconstitutional I It'is not worth a damn I It is not worth the paper it is printed upoi) 1 It was passed by a damn ed Radical Congress!"
The, Assessor was not to be frightened off by the blood-thirsty Adjutant in this manner, and as the liquor peddlers plead ed that thiy had no money, Voorhees was sent for,'who'said be "would endorse for Stewart, and that it Would be adjusted as soon as they reached town." An attempt was made by the peddlers to drive their wagon off, and that failing, they tried to tire the Assessor out by staying at the grounds until near dark. Finding all their tricks useless, they finally paid the amount demanded.
The collector not being in town, they were given no receipt, but it is said they hav.a exhibited a receipt at Worthington, and 'at other points in Greene county with the nante of "E. E Slues, attached there to.. If so, it is a forgeiy, as Mr. Sluss gave them no receipt or statement that they had paid the money.—Sloomington Progress, 'I
