a recent cause before Judge McDonald, involving the question of tbe fees and charges of assignees in bankruptcy) the court held that: An assignee is entitled to retain out of the moneys in his hands as such the amount of all necessary expenditures by him, and enough to reasonably compensate him for all services performed by him in the faithful execution of his trust, as well as his per cent age allowed by the bankrupt act on all moneys received or paid out by him.— And the Register may allow these claims when opposition to them is not formally made.
SCOTT it AS A RIVAL I—One Dr, E Preston, of Harmony, Clay county, is about to snatch tho laurels from the brow of J. T. S. as a mathematician. He delivered a speech at Stanton a few dayss since, in which be stated that "tc transport the enormous debt- of the Government it would require a line of wagons long enough to reach around the globe, al lowing 2.000 pounds of go Id
to each
wagon." Allowing sixteen ounces to the pound and $20 to the ounce gives us $H20 to the pound, winch multiplied by 2,000 pounds, the amount in each wagon, gives us $640,000 to the load. Allowing rods or 49J feet for each wagon, gives 107 wagons in a mile, which multiplied by 23,000, the number i.f miles around tho globe, gives 2 925.000 wagons, which multiplied by 640,000, the number of dollars to each wagon, gives $1,872,000,000,000 which, according to the Doctor, is the amount of the public debt.

MR. EDITOR:
night, as the
train due here at eleven o'clock, was passing Harmony, on the T. H. & 1. R. R., it ran over a man, whose name was not known at the time and which we have not since been able to learn. The top of his head was crushed in a horrible manner. It is thought that he was drugged) then robbed and laid on the track. This1 however, is mere suspicion. The body was taken, care of by the railroad officials.
MON
yesterday, was an immense sue
cess. About four thousand people were present from the counties of Parke and Vermillion. Several Bands of music were on the ground. Col. Wui. E. McLean made the iirst speech, occupying nearly two hours in an able, eloquent and exhaustive review of the principal issues of tbe campaign. Hon. John Hanna, of Putnam, followed in his usual felicitous style. Old Parke is getting thorough* ly aroused and will come in with more than her usual majority in October.
SPIRITUAL PHENOMENA,
—Your paper being
channel through which to reach the public ear, and premising in the outset that you do not indorse all tbe ideas, crude or otherwise for which you furnish type, I doubt not you will give room for a statement of the few following facts and thoughts upon a matter deeply in turesting to at least a portion of your reader*.
That a few gentlemen associated them selves together in the earJ3T part of the past winter for the purpose of improving, scientifically, their spiritual growth, and have been holding scenes at "Ponce's Hall" for the purpose of aiding the invisible intelligence of a higher life to manifest themselves to their friends of earth, through the mediumship of Dr.
W.
This will be more readily understood when it is considered that ihe forming of the materialism i3 purely a chemical pro cess, one which can not be realized in solar or decomposing light. This law in chemical manipulation is not new to the scientist, or to tbe artist, though by them little understood. What is the picture photographically produced? It is not by any means a shadowy nothing, but is
essential in materializing spiritual bodies. I
NT I
...
Ihe same law holds good in both cases. It is stated, however, by spirit mteligence?, that by certain chemical combinations, a light, delfusive in effect, can be produced which is entirely unlike the
reflected light produced by tho consump-'
lion of combustible matter. A light not
destructive to the matenalized
ranee of the circle, they have the moet convincing evidence in the manifest progress made, as indicated by test lights given from time to time, tbe greater power evinced in handling the instruments, opening and closing of doors, passing up and down etairs.playing on tho accordeon. moiodeon and other instruments, speaking in louder and firmer voices. 5fr?., &c^ while it is knercr. that the medium is intact, and a passive observer, like any other member of the circle, of the trans* piring phenomena.
They have not only these palpable and unmistakable evidences of fact before them, but the controlling band of Angel intelligences say they know whereof they speakwhen they assure them that the great object songht after is not a question of fact, but of time only, and that pot far distant.
There has been a strong desire expressed by many of our citizens to witnen the

manifestations constantly occurring at these seances and in a measure to gratU fy that wish, and assist at the same time the medium pecuniarily, the Association determined a few weeks ago to sell a few tickets for each seance, the number being limited to six, as larger circles would be detrimental to the attainment of the groat object specially sought after.
T.
Church, is qnite well known, and their purposes and motive, of which but little could be understood, have been pretty thoroughly criticised, pro and con, by the citizens.
Tho fact is.well known to that class of spiritualists who have looked into the chemical science of spiritual manifestations that darkness is an indispensable condition to their production. Raps and the moving of ponderable bodies are produced by magnetic and electric forces, the laws governing which are understood by disembodied spirits, but their action and control are not yet explainable to the understanding of those in the physical plane of life, riut unlike these are the laws governing the physical manifestations such as playing on instruments of music, speaking in audible voices, &c., &o These can not be prodnced except through physically material contact. Spirits, disembodied, can not lift an instrument and manipulate its strings or keys without first taking on,or so materializing the spirit form as that it shall correspond with the natural body.
To those who have thus far attended the manifestations have been generally satisfactory but to the more skeptical (honesty so doubtless) they have not been so convincing. For the benefit of the latter class, and to put the manifestations beyond all question or cavil, the circle by and with the consent and approval of the medium have resolved that in the future at all seances of this class tho medium shall be confined in such maimer as to render it impossible that he nbill have any voluntary agency in tbe phenomena produced.
Pursuant to this suggestion on last Thursday evening at a private fitting of the circle proper the medium wasjponfined by passing a common tape round^iis body, under the arms, bringing the endsjforward through the arm holes of thefvest and tieiog them snugly on the chest iwith too hard knot.*. Then carrying tpe parts down on either hide and to tho bapk round of the chair beneath the seat, t| which they were again tied with hari knotsThen one end was tacked to a l|ijg of the
tape and tack heads at those poinfe of con tact, as well as the knot first tiljd,' were covered and pressed down witl^ sealing wax,
thu3
The reader can scarcely bo sxpected to form a just conception ol' these most extraordinary manifestations by what can be said of them in the limits of a newspaperjarticle. To realize their tangibility, and weigh their importance to the future of tho human race they must not only be witnessed, but studied. M.
