In this age of ceaseless striving and breathless business, blessed in even that preacher who giveth his beloved congregation sleep. All beings have value if put to their proper uses, and a poor sermon may be a good (and harmless) opiate.

PERSONAL.

The Bev. Thomas A. Morris, senior Bishop of the Methoidst Episcopal Church in a ministery of over fifty years, never read a written sermon to his congregation, and never had notes before him, when preaching, beyond three times. Each time he found himself so embarrassed by referring to his notes that he felt like a man trying to run a foot-race with his feet hoppled. More that a third of a century Bgo he resolved, when his memory so failed that he could not recall the general arrangement of his sermon without the aid of notes before him, he would quit preaching altogether.

A prominent character in Swedish history has just died at Stockholm. Count Otto von Morner was born in 1781, and during his long life of eighty-seven years took a very active part in the politics of his country. It is to him that the present Swedish dynasty is chiefly indebpted for its possession of the throne. In 1810, on the death of Charles Augustus, Count von Morner immediately went to Paris and offered the Swedish crown to Marshall Bernadotte. The Marshal then presented himself as a candidate for election as Crown Prince, and Count von Morner labored so zealously in his behalf that the election resulted in his favor, notwithstanding the ill-concealed opposition of the King and hia Court. TJltin, ately Bernadotte was crowned king as Charles John of Sweden, and Count von Morner was appointed his Aide deCamp. The deceased was very intimate with the chief members of the royal family, and occupied several important civil and military posts.

A correspondent of tbe Vi« Parisietme gives the following pleasing description of a young European sovereign: "Hats off boys!" cried the schoolmaster to his twenty boys, whom I had met in the large poplar alley near Hohenschwangau. "Here comes His Majesty the Kingl" Sure enough the tall youth in the comfortable gray summer suit, and with a fine Pana« ma hat on his head, was no other than the sovereign of Bavaria. He is, by all odds, the fioest young Sovereign prince your correspondent has ever seen. He wore no kid gloves, and held in his hand a twig he bad torn off from a tree, and plucked leaf after leaf from it,' while humming a ditty. When he came up to the school-master and hit txrps he stood still, told the teacher to cover his head, exchanged a few words with one or two of the boys, and asked then all of them in a load voice, "My children, are all of you industrious at school?" The school-master replied that be was satisfied with the application of his pupils. "Then, sir,'' said the King, turning to him, "I hope you will let the boys have a free afternoon to-day." The school-master was only to happy to comply with His Majesty's requeiU the boys shouted "Hurrah" and the King, bowing and taking off is hat, passed on, humming again and plucking the leaves from his twig. He looked like a student of a
