WE are in receipt of the Sacramento Daily Union,
of the 10th ult., containing
the interesting proceedings of the opening of Sixth Industrial Fair of Mechanic's Institute, at Sac Francisco. Our former townsman Newton Booth, Esq., delivered the opening address.
i.-. POLK RAISING.—The Republicans of the Fifth Ward were successful in raising their pole yesterday afternoon, on the open space on North Eighth street, just across the canal. It is one hundred and fifty feet high—the tallest in the city.
Last evening a large audience assembled 011 the ground. Stevens' martial band was in attendance with souKstirring music. Col. John P. Baird led off in a few practical remarks, spoken in such common-sense way as to carry conviction to his hearers. lie was followed by Major Garter in a half-hour talk and he in turn by 1. N. Pierce, Esq. Brief remarks were also made by Messrs. Rankin, Turner, O'Rielly and Filbeck. It was an excellent meeting, full of euthusiasm and breathing tha right spirit.
Go SLOW.—On the night of the Palmer demonstration stones were thrown at the procession and into the crowd at the Court Rouse. Similar conduct has been observed on several other occasions. We are also informed that Demociatic crowds have been stoned. We do not beliove these stones were thrown by voters of either party, but think some idle and mischievous boys have chosen this sort of amusement. But, whoever have been the aggressors, they have been guilty of outrageously wrong and mean acts. They have causelessly endangered the lives of people who were only exercising the right of every citizen, and have .justly incurred the contempt and indignation of all firm minded men. This campaign is quite exciting enough without resorting to any other means than such as are con tldered honorable in political warfare. No cause can be helped by brutality or rowdyism. We hope all good citizens, irrespective of party, will unite in an earnest eftort lo put an immediate stop to everything that looks like insult to either party on the occasion of public demonstrations. Let us maintain law, order and public tranquility.

PROBABLE MUBDBB.—James Miller, a young man in the employ of Anthony Creal, was shot yesterday afternoon some eight or ten miles ncrth of this city, by Dr. Whittaker. Two balls entered the young man's hip, and a third entered the breast, glancing out at the arm, from the effect? of which it is supposed he will die. Dr. Hollingsworth, of that vicinityi gave the injured man such immediate attention as was necessary until the arrival of Dr. Link, of this city, who went up last evening. Dr. Whittaker came down to thi? city last evening and gave himself up to the officers. On a partial examination before Mayor Cookerly at ten o'clock last night, he was admitted to bail in the sum of $1,500 to appear to-morrow morning at nine o'clock, when the exajnination in full will take place.

T" NewAlbanyXefogrthinki' 'strange indeed" that the State debt has not been? decreased more than $5,000,000, while the Republican party has controlled its finances! What then must be the public judgment on the Democratic party, which during fifteen years of continuous supremacy, not only failed to pay anything on the debt, but actually increased it mor» than one million dollars ?—Ind.
A MEETING was appointed for 1
inid by.jjtenubliqans township'of Polk. Our Republican friends had been on the ground but a short time, until it was made evident that a number of Democrats bad come to the meeting armed, Ind full of 'bad whisky,! with a determination to drive the Union men from the ground. Their first demonstration, after a considerable"amount of threatening had been indulged in, was the wresting of a Union flag from an individual who held it, tekfing -it iiHo 'riMonn/a7id stamping it in the dust!
A company of ,'Fjghting Boys in Blue were on the gronnd, and it was with the utmost difficulty they could be restrained from giving .these guerillas the thieabing they so rumly lleser^ed.
One of the Republicans, who darea to cheer for Grant and Colfax, was knocked from his horse, with a club in the hands of a Seymour and Blair Democrat, And wifila lying Hunned, beneath his animal's feet, was kicked and beaten so brutally that he has ever since been eonfined to his bed.
This is the second meeting at which tfae Republicans have been grosslyjnsulted, in Monroe county—a third attempt may be resented by the Union men.
This result can be traced almost directly to the inflammatory articles that have recently appe*jw£ Aft Bloomington Democrat,—Hloominglon Progress,
