•-L'-vV/W England. LONDON, Sept. 8.- The English yacht "Aline" has been laid up for the season, consequently her owner declines to euter her from Cowesto Cherbourg and return with the American yacht Sappho. Telegrams received from Aden, Arabia, state that the German savans who went there to make observances of the recent eclipse, were entirely successful, having taken 3i* photographic views, four of which were perfect.
LONDON, Sept. a.—The Times says the policy of the United States towards the Indians is one of conciliation and forbearance, but so costly as not much longer to be profitably pursued.
From Savannah, Ga.
SAVANNAH Sept. 7 A. A. Bradley, colored who was lately expelled from the Georgia Senate held a Republican meeting, this evening. He said Clift and other carpet-baggers and Yanks are not to be trusted, and advised the negroes not to trust them white people, and especially the Yankees who were the meanest people on earth be doubted if even the mulattoes could be trusted, as the white blood in their veins might gain the mastery. He said the recent action of the Georgia Legislature in turning out the negroes would increase the majority for Grant. At first he thought tho negro members would draw revolvers and assert their rights in blood, which would have benefited Democrats.
He was glad they had done other »vise. He thought the coming election, which bling and contradictory character, many ever way it event, would cause bloodshed. The whole speech was of a ramhearers being doubtful which side the speaker supported. He spoke nearly the whole evening. About four hundred persons were present. The meeting passed off quietly.
Advices from Mexico. SANFRANCUCO, Sept. 8.—Advices from Oolima, Mexico, August,15th, report great improvement of affairs in that State and State of Guerrigo. General resumption ofbusinessj had taken place. Mansonf illeo, a seaport of Oolima, had become of considerable importance since the opposition line of steamers from SanFrancisco regularly stop there. Many buildings were being put up and new business agencies established. Stages from Tepis to the city of Mexico will commence running regularly by the middle of October next, making trips in seven days. Another revolution had broken out in the State of Tamaulipas. Col's. Vegas and Corronda having pronounced against Gov. Gorza. Provisions scarce in several States, famine threatened. In the State of Guerrero, beans nine cents per pound, corn two dollars per bushel.
From Ottawa-
OTTAWA, Sept 7.—The trial of James "Whalen for the murder of D' Arcy McGee commenced this morning before Chief «J ustice Richard.
The court was densely crowded and there was much excitement in the city. James O'Reily, of the Queen's Court, appeared for the Crown, and Messrs. J. H. Cameron, Kenneth McKensie and McCameron for the defense, assisted by .McFarrell, the celebrated criminal lawyer of Quebec.
The prisoner appeared pale and nervous, but answered boldly to his name. After the jury had been sworn Mr. O'Reily opened the casse, stating that the Crown expected to prove the murder was planned by a band
ot
conspirators in
Montreal, and the prisoner was the instrument chosen to carry the crime into effect. He spoke at considerable length, detailing the facts of the case.
The defense made no opening speech. A large number of witnesses were examined for the Crown. The most important evidence given is that of La Croix, who swore he saw Whalen shoot McGee. The other ovidence was circumstantial, and differs in no material degree from that elicited at the inquest, but is very damaging to Whalen. It is said the Crown will put a woman in the box to swear that Whalen told her he murdered McGee.
The trial will occupy four or five days. INTERNATIONAL RAILROAD. It is stated that the Imporial Government has sanctioned a general outs line of the International Railroad, providing it should strike certain points The details are left to tho Dominion Gov-, ernment to arrange.
Pastimes in Kentucky. LOUISVILLE, Sept. 8.—A company of 15 or 25 mounted men^ntered Versailles, Kv., Sunday and commenced firing upon a number of negroes. The inhabitants of the town soon organized and returned the fire and the assailants were driven off, leaving two of their number by capture and had several wounded.
A number of the defenders are reported wounded, none seriously. Christmas Mill, three miles from the city, has been on one or two occasions surrounded by armed negroes with the evident intention of taking forcible possession of it. The employees of the mill opened fire on the negroes, driving them off and wounding one in the heel. A servant girl named Nellie Conner, living on the Salt River road, was dragged from her home a few nights since by a body of ten men and stnpped and tarred.
