A CORRKSPONMET of the Indianapolis Journal,

speaking of Col. Nelson's recent

speech at Franklin, pays that gentleman this handsome compliment: "Colonel Nelson combines in such happy proportions eloquence of diction with perspicuity of logic and force of argument that the secret of his command over audiences is not difficult to be discerned.

HON. BAYLESS W. The reply was, in bold letters, "GFIANTL1 Planchett was not asked any more political questions, and Bayless declares it a Radical invention.

MEN OF OUR DAY.—Mrs. Cohoe is now in the city canvassing for thfl work, which is a series of Biographical sketches of Patriots, Orators, Statesmen, Generals, Reformers, Financiers and Merchants, now on the stage of action, including those who in Military, political, business and BQcial life, are the prominent leaders of the times in this country. It is printed on good paper, clear type and embellish* ed with forty-two portraits from life. It is furnished to subscribers at the low price of $3,00. We commend the book and Mrs. Cohoe, who is the wife of a crippled soldier, to the kind consideration of our citizens. .,

UNION CHRISTIAN COLLEGE.—We invite attention to the advertisement of this institution, which begins its fall term Wednesday the 16th init. This college is now prepared to compete with any other institution of learning in the west It is pleasantly situated at Merom, Sul. livan county, on the east bank of the Wabash, two hundred feet above the waters of that stream, and overlooking the prairies of Illinois. The morals, order and quiet of the place, are unsurpassed. There is not a grog shop, gambling saloon, or allurement of any kind to en danger the morals or dissipate the minds of the students on which account the students of Merom enjoy this further advantage that the expense of obtaining an education there is much less thin in any other place with which we are acquainted. rtHSM .. w!

"LIG«,J! of tne Indianapolis JouiHal has been to Evansville and, having be* come enthused/ expresses himself in relation to that city as follow*.

Evansville Is moifo like a city than any other place in the State. The Ohio river, which, in the peculiar economy of nature, runs past large cities, gives it the

ability to 2arry on a hea and South, with

trade, North tppi and up Steamers com

mercial importance of the place is rapidly increasing. Tne people are alive to their business interests. There is plenty of capitalafcdnpna of itvahiggish. 'It-is ready for promjtt investment, whenever a good opening is presented. The completion of the Evansville, Henderson and Nashville railroad, now fairly under way, will mark an epoch in the history of the Cresent City. It has long lines of closely built business houses it has beautiful residences and spacious yards it has an earnest business community, largely composed of Germans and a society unexcelled in the State.

It.has a Street Railway Company operating a long line, and which is constantly stretching out its iron fingers, and talking into the market large unoccupied tracts of land, which find ready sale at good figures, indicative of a feeling of confidence in the future of the place. It has a people of generous impulses and unbounded hospitality: not too modest in their estimate of the importance of their own city, and with good reason, as every visitor will concede and last, but not least, it has the most gorgeous crop of "poles" of every politics—Grant and CoU fax, and Seymour and Blair—to be found outside of Brown county, where poles are the staple product.

The Republicans are alive and earnest. They feel confident of the county and the District, and are sure of being one of the vanguard in leading the electoral vote of the State to form the triumphant column for GrfkPt and CplfauE.

I must not close without mentioning the ftfaosville Journal.. 'Under the tttfageii£nt of Mr. F. M. Thayer, formerly of iHtjiiinapolis, and Colonel John W. Fosit has grown to be a newspaper of no

ble front building adjoining the new opi house, on Locust street and Second, wh would do credit to anypublishing establishment in the West. The Journal deals no faint blows at the Lost Cause, and .when the returns come in from the Pocket its 'political influence will be acknowledged.
