Riot in Manchester. ..

London Times on the Annexation

England.

LONDON, Sept. 7.—Mr. Murphy, champion of Protestantism in Manchester, is a candidate for the House of Common*, to represent Manchester.

Several thousand people were present at a meeting in his interest Saturday, at which the conduct of magistrates towards Murphv in the Ashton riots last May was severely denounced.

The meeting was attacked by a mob of Irish Catfeolifs who drove off the speaker* and a sanguinary fight ensued.

The police^finally succeeded in quelling the riot knd arresting several

OF

the lead

ers subsequently. There were several minor disturbances during Saturday night and Sunday, several persons were badly injured.

There is much excitement in the city. The Times to-day says the annexation of Mexico to the United States is desirable, but conld not be accomplished at present without needless expenditures of money and blood.

The Daily News commenting on the mission of the new American Minister, Mr. Johnson, says diffieult questions are to be treated but England has given abundant proof of her good faith.

In sending-Mr. Johnson to this country the United States Government shows its desire to settle pending disputes, and such disposition is the best guarantee that negotions will be brought to a satisfactory conclusion.

Rev. Mr. Bellows, of New York, haa written a letter to th* London Times on the Irish Church question. He says dieeitablisment of the Irish Church is a measure of even more importance to the foreign relations than to the internal interest of Great Britain. The accomplishment of this reform would be a great step toward the removal of those grievances whieh seeme powerfully to inflame the feelings of Irishmen in America against the British Government, and which, while they continue to exist to make war, provoked by the persistent efforts of leaders, at any time possible between England and America.

MANCHESTER, Sept. 7.—Thirty-seven persona have been arrested for taking part in both sides in the riot on Sunday, and brought before the police Magistrates to-day, and after a short preliminary investigation were remanded for furthei examination. Exoitetneot still runs high, and a renewal of disturbance is feared. Every precaution haa been taken to prefj Ut CS serve order.- i. 4 iw j'tm
