THE RUMOR that Jobn T. Scott has been tendered the Professorship of Mathematics in Asbury TTniversity lacks confirmation.

IT is supposed that the services of E. I. Holden of Vigo will not be required at the approaching State Fair, to issue "indulgences" to "gay gamboliers,'' guaranteeing immunity from arrest.

IT is understood that the next vacancy in theprofessorship of M&theruatics in our State University will be promptly filled by the appointment of .lohn T. Scott, his recent exploits in figures having attracted the favorable notice o[ the Board of Trim tees.

J. R. PHILLIES would have no show for the Democratic nomination for Superintenant of Public Instruction had the Sullivan mathematical genius of John T. Scott boen developed prior to the Eighth of January Convention.

THE DEMOCRACY had a fair sieod audience at the Court House last night. CaptEd. Harlan, an imported youth from Marshal), Illinois, atnbled through the usual topics of a Democratic speech, without startling his audience with any very new or particularly brilliant idea.

THE TANKER CLUB of Paris, Ills, extends an invitation to the Tanner Clubs, Fighting Boys in Blue and all supporters of the Grant and Colfax ticket in Terre Haute to meet with them at Paris on Friday the 4th of September. Addresses will bo made by General Palmer and others. They want a band of music and all tho torches that can be furnished.

FILL your baskets with provisions— take tbem to the Baptist Sabbath School Picnic to-morrow, enjoy yourself in rambling through the woods awhile, and get some of those splendid peaches they raise down in Sullivan county and sell for 50 cents a bushel.

A ROCKVILLE correspondent says it took Voorhees half an heur, in his recent speech at 'that place, to explain a single paragraph of his Greencastle speech and inquires: How long, at this rate would it take him to explain his entire anti-war record As we have not time for extensive mathematical calculations, we beg leave to refer the question to John T. Scott. His figures on wheat might approximate tho number of years which Daniel would require to perform the Herculean task suggested.

CHILD CHOKED TO

Mr. N. H. Harper, residing on North Third street, jnst above the Cemetery) was choked to death Sunday afternoon by a grain of coffee lodging in its windpipe. The child was about one year old and wae playing with a small quantity of cofl'ee. It lived only twenty minutes after swallowing the coffee. It is a terrible warning to mothers to keep such article out of the reach of small children.

PROMINENT among the works in our State library are the writings of the different Scotts who have embelished modern literature. The many fascinating volumes of Sir Walter's prose and poetry and the autobiography of Winfield have heretofore drawn largely on the honors pertaining to the name, but the new work entitled "John T. Scott on the National Debt" will in future eclipse the writings of all his predecessors who have borne that honored patronymic. It is understood that another volume, ''Scott on the Fish Law," will soon be issued, a .»•

THE MEETING) of the German Grant and Colfax Club, Monday evening was by far the largest and most enthusiastic of any yet held. It was resolved that, at the next public demonstration the club march in a body, and a Committee was appointed to secure Cuqua's Brass Band. The following names were added to the Ward Committees:

First Ward—H. F. Reiners, Frederick Goetz, Wm. Ramme, Daniel Herzel, Ja cob Seicrest.

Second Ward—C. F. Wittenberg, Nich. Katzenbach, C. Reichert Third Ward—Frank Julien, William Scbatz, Hugo Duenveg.

"A GREAT DEMOCRATIC MEETING."— A notice of long standing in the

vK-v.-" -V

Journal's

local columns, has informed the faithful that, by order of the County Central Committee, the Democratic county candi dates would address the people of Kevins Township, at Green's Chapel, on the first of September, (yesterday.) The long looked for day arrived. Ditto the candidates, or at least a portion of them, and a strong reinforcement of the small fry among the Democratic stump orators of our favored city.

John T. Scott was there big with figures! and in travail with logic I There, too, was S. C. Davis, boiling over with Cicer. onean eloquence! Daugherty was on hand, swollen with the sublimity of hi, own conceit. And Doctor Daugherty added the lustre of his name to

tthe

tillating array! But "the dear people" were

not

there.

Cruel as it may seem they obstinately staid at home, in appreciation of the groat moral show" that had been prepar fid for their political, moral and intellectual elevation and delectation. When our informant arrived upon the scene, the "demonstration'' was in full blast Scott had been delivered and Daugherty was accouched. Ten women and girls, about fifteen men and boys, mostly dealorr in beer and other refreshments intended for "the orow.l." composed the audience. These were scattered over an area of not less than an acre. When Daugherty essayed to speak, there was no andience within ordinary hearing distance but, not discouraged, he called to some small boys, who were standing about a wator-melon wagon in the back-ground, saying "Come here boys, I'm going to make a speech." A few of them kindly lent their immediate presence and the diarrhetic flow went on. -wwji

Our informant is a perfectly reliable gentleman and vouches for the absolute truth of this report.

ABOOT ten'dayB ago Mr. Nicholas Miller of New Albany, run a nail into one of his feet. ^The wound healed up as be thdught, but on Thursday last it caused him great pain, resulting in lockjaw.— The unfortuate man lived until Saturday morning, when death put an end to his sufferings.

A FEW nights ago the house of a Mr. Wood, of Decatur, Ind., was entered by burglars, and $1,200 taken from under his head, where he had placed it for safe keeping. Mr. Wood had been East and sold a lot of horses. He had just returned, and this money was the proceeds of I the sales. No clue has been obtained as to who committed the robbery.

As MR. JOHN A. BRENTS, of Dubois county, was riding in company with another man, on the Leavenworth road, last Friday, engaged in conversation and apparently in good health, he suddenly fell from his horse, and upon his companion getting down to help him, he was found to be-dead. The Jasper

Courier

says a Coroner's inquest was held, and the finding was that he died from an apo« plectic stroke.|~

A DISPATCH from Butler, DeKalb county, dated 31st ult., gives the following report of a, mass meeting at that .place:

The people of DeKalb county are fully awake, as their demonstration fully proves, and they will make their votes tell for Grant and Colfax this fall.

General Kimball's speech was brief, but the points were mostly new, and told upon his numerous and intelligent audience.

General Hascall has many good hits, peculiarly his own, and be was listened to with profound attention.

The demonstration here to-day, it is conceded, has given us at least a hundred votes in this part of the State.
