Never within ibo recollection*tif -the oldest inhabitant "or.Any,,other m^n"lhas, our city witnessed f»o transccnd'cntly grand, §q superlaAiy^ly .gj.oripus ^.demonstration, as .that which greeted the gallant General John J^L.. It'was-a surprise to liiose^ ^ven who -had-been® most active in iqaki^g the brief and hurried preparations, which tho short notice of General l'almer's expected vi^it, perniitted.to be made lor bis reception. And if it surprised them, what shall be sara 'of its" effect upon the Democracy? They had looked for a few "Lincoln Dogs" to turn out in honor of "the butcher," as their refined organ styles him, lut when tho entire Union-loving portion of the inhabitants of our city poured out, fin masHc, to welcome the brave, hones* Clmmpipn of loyalty, thny fell back in in* expressible amazement and intensified disgust. They Elunk away to their accustomed haunts, ieoliug and talking as many of them were wont to feol and talk when tho souls of Union men were elated with the news of Ftderal victories oyer armies of Southern Democrats. On tho loft of the Fighting Boys th Tanners of tho several Wards, with full ranks, and carrying lanterns and trahp parenoios, took np their position. The' had l^oou hastily organized, but turne out with that hearty zeal which is .thi sure guaranty of success in a.good caustf.

Along tho line were the transparencies and mottoes on lamps, as exhibited on the .night of the Carter demonstration, with tho addition of many others. A CiSifi elseVrhere raises a question of veracity between John T. Scott and the Sullivan Union. On such a question our readers will, probably, havelittlo hesitancy in deciding in .favor of the latter.— Generally, the word of one true Union man, in relation to political matters, should stand against the assertions of any number of men of the opposite character.

Wo know nothing of the'merits of this case. We think, however, that can didatos lor judicial offices ought not to make political speeches. It is not expected by the community, %nd thej|can accomplUli no good. Mr. Scott' had no..right to, a&k us to publish, his card. He ought to have s&rit it to the Sullivan Union for publication, or to his organ the Journal, but we givejit|as ajniatter of courtesy' to a citizen, and leave the fight between him£and the Union with the opinion that the Union can take care of itself on a quositon of veracity.
