Mixed.

Senator

in addressing hi9

the South divided and

An Inquiry.

A Democrat from Sullivan county inquired at this office a day or two ago if "John T.

great party ever committed, this platform of the Democrats, unless Indeed they «Un war, seems to us the least SANE.

Although

the correspondence was publishod io out issue of Thursday, we give it again, as its insertion seems necessary, to preserve tbe continuity of the article:)

Were it necessary to adduce any evidence, in addition to the volumes which have already been offered, to prove the great weakness which characterizes the Democratic ticket, the utter instability of platform upon which the nominees have been placed, and tbe feeling of hopelessness in the success of their cause which hangs like an incubus upon the Demo* cratic leaders, that evidence is now furnished by "tho tall Sycamore, of the Wabash."

Only a little while ago the Democratic papers were "taking the flattering unction to their souls" that, while Mr. Voorhees was willing, nay anxious, to canvass tbe Sixth District with his political competi tor, the latter would decline, through fear of being unable to cope with go powerful an adversary. But Major Carter is made of sterner stuff than wind can dissipate.— Conscious of the moral strength which right principles always furnish the possessor believing that the discussion of political questions when addressed to Reason is more potent than when addressed to Passion and knowing full well that his opponent was addicted rather to tbe display of "empty rhetoric, which tick le3 the oar, than to the delivery of argu ments, which convince tho mind Major Carter made the following proposition to 31 r. Dear Sir:—Favoring

a free and full

discussion, before tho people, of the groat questions involved iuthis political contest, I rospectfully propose, that we, as oppo sing candidates for Congress, in this District, mako a joint canvas? of tho same,

I will be pleased to moot, and confer with you, at any timo and place you may designate, for the purpose of perfecting an arrangement for the canvass.

You will please transmit your answer to this, through tho gentleman who hands you the same. Very truly yours,

"Ofcours*

the proposition wss at once accepted!" wo hoar conceited Democrats say. "Surely the great champion of unadulterated Do mooracy iu Indiana, tho idol of the party, will soizrtbts opportunity to "put, out the light" of his pigmy opponent I' Alas for these victims of delusion. That

light

beams with liberty and equality and knowledge it is the light which burns the mask from treason^facn, and leaves an ineffaceable brand upon its wearer it is the light which melts the fetters of slavery and of ignorance, sweeps away the barriers to human progress, and illumines the forma of Liberty, Education and Equality with glory it js tho light which, though it may for a time be smothered, will rise again, like a phoenix from its ash es, renewed in bfilliincy and jiower, Mr. Voorhees knows this, and with all his acknowledged ability, he fears the effects of that light when thrown upon the corrupt and treasonable acts of tbe party whose cause be' espouses. But It is not he alone that entertains this l'oar, for we find that tbe Gteene county Democratic Central Committee, some two weeks since, passed a resolution "requesting the Con gressional Committee'to use its influence to prevent Mr. Voorhees from entering upon ajoint canvass—the reason assignee, for suoh a novel proceeding was that "it was not desirable that Mr. Voorhees should draw crowds for Major Carter to speak to -r which is oae of the best com pliments that tbe latter could possibly re Odive. Under thet# circumetancee, it Ii nil -surprising that the "tall Sycamore" should indite the following auswor to tbe Major's proposition:

Your letter of the

yesterday, in relation to a joint canvass wasreoeived. I leave, this morning, on the early train, accompanied by my family pbysi cian to attend the bed-side of a sick daughter, who is absent from her home.

When I can return to the District is in volved in doubt and uncertainty. You have already canvtssed a portion of the District.

The time left me till the election is limited, and my canvass must neces sarily be brief and irregular. Un der the circumstances should I enter into an agreement for a joint canvass, I would be liable to be called away—and unable to fill some of the appointments therefore, decline the offer—and beg of you to receive, this as final upon the sivSject.

It will be observed that while sickness in the family is made the ostensible reason of Mr. Voorheen1 declination, the whole tenor of the letter indicates unmis takubly that other and more weighty con sideration influenced the gentleman's action for the declination is absolute and unqualified. Doe? Mr. Voorhees consider that the defeat of his party, is a foregone conclusion, and it is therefore ureless to labor for its success Doei he think the party platform tob frail to stand the broadsides from its enemy's batteries Has he given up the race in this district as hopeless? Wo believe that if the secret recesses of Mr. Voorhees' heart could be penetrated, there would be found an aflirtnativeanswer.to all of these questions.

Mr. Voorhees declines to enter into free and fair discussion of the great political questions which aro now agitatingthe public mind and it will naturally bo concluded that tho gentleman, being engaged in a bad cause, under bad leaders, and upon slippery ground, dreads tbe elimination of truth, and desires to better the fortunes of his party by pmoticing deception on the people
