THE PUBLIC MARKET is indoed a genuine democratic institution. The poor washerwoman and the '"wealthy^ nabob may bo eoon any moraine side by side diving into tho same pile of rousting cars, or deciding with the eyo of a connoisseur on tho relative merits of the various artiste composing their daily ration:'. "GOT ANY BUTTER? '—IS tho cry constantly ringing In the earn of thogrocorvrnon of our city, and the prevailing answer has been "cot any."' Good butter has beon very scarce, tho warm weather and prosa of work in tho country rendering it impossible that a full supply should be fnrnisbed. The market, however, is now looking up in theso particulars and wo may soon look for a supply commensurate with the demand.
SKIFF AND QAYLORD'S MINSTRELS drow a good audience last evening at Dowling's Hall, and their pleasing melange of mirth, music and comedy created the most smiling state of affairs. This troupe always has a kindly greeting from oar people, and for the good reason that With each return wo lind their music improved, tho comic richer, the jokes better, the wit keener, tho conceits happier and tho performors more animated. The company appears again to-night in & varied programme of sparkling wit and extravagant humor, mingled with the sweet music of plaintive ballads and the lively air« of comic ditties. DR. SMITH'S BIBLE DICTIONARY.— This work we esteem to be the most va). liable addition to Biblical learning for the common .people that has been presented to tho public through the American press in modern times. This is substantially the testimony that over a hundred of the most eminent scholars and Divines of our country have given, as is scon from the prospectus which Mr. Mitchell, the agent for it, who is now canvassing our cityi fullv shows.
PERIODICALS.—Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, for August 15tb, containing an almost infinite variety of pleasant reading, and finely executed en gravings Harper's Bazaar, for August 22d, with its irrosittiblo charms for ladies of taste Harper's Weekly, for August 15th, one of tho most elegant and valuable numbers yet issued "Pleasant Hours,' for September, beautifully illustrated, and rich in good things fur the home circie, and Ballou's Monthly, for Soptomlor filled with excellent material to sandwich in between layers of more solid reading have been placed on our table, by O'Uonnell, who has them all in unlimited supply, with many other periodicals that cannot fail to d. light the literary connoisseur.
LINTON TOWNSHIP REPUBLICAN MOWING.—The meeting appointed yesler day afternoon at tho School House ii. Hartforil was attended by fiftv or moru o. tho voters of Linton Township besides a number front other localities. Hnn. M. Meredith mado a short but. stirring and offer live speech. The initiatory steps worn taken for the organization of a Cluo of "Tanner?," and a Committee was appointed to make the necesssary arrangements for such an organization and was instructed to report at an adjourned meeting, to be held On Saturday tho 22d inst, at 4 o'clock P. M., at which time Hon. E. Hamilton will deliver an address.
The following gentlemen constitute tbo Committee: Fred. F. Cornell, Joseph Smith, Phillip Randolph, Ephraim Kester, Samuel Hook and Simpson Bitcher.
THE FIRST BATTALION OF FIGHTING BOYS IN BLUE met at G. A. R. Hall last evening, Lieut. Col. Gilmore in the Chair. The commanding officer appointed the non-commissiened staff a? follows:
Jacob E. Voorhees, Sergt. Major A. W. Madison, Q. M. Sergeant Robert Linn, Color Sergeant .r R. H. Stephens, Fife Major Henry Richardson, Drum Sergeant Frank Blything, Chief Bugler. Several important committees wore appointed and properly instructed. A resolution was adopted guaranteeing to the Republicans of Vigo county the hearty and active support of the Fighting Boys in Blue throughout the canvass.
The officers of the battalion wcro authorized, by a resolution, to wear the regulation uniform with the usual insignia of rank.
Other business was transacted which need not be mentioned here, and a most enthusiastic spirit pervaded the meeting, a firm determination to fight out the campaign, with the weapons of peace, on "the good old Union line." Tho hall was crowded, throughout the entire eveningi with earnest, ardent workers in the Union cause.
At the close of the business, Comrado Isaac N. Pierce was invited to Address the meeting and responded in one of the happiest efforts to which we have listened during this canvass. He was frequently interrupted with cheers and other mani. festations of applause, and at the close of his remarks "The Boys" gave him a round of cheors which shook the building "from turret to foundation stone." It was a good meeting iu the best sense of the word and we expoot to aee many more such during the next three months.— "The Boys:: foel that they hava tho old enemy, in a new guise, to fight, and they are "going in for Grant and victory.

Tho audience then disperaed.
A. M. ADVICE THAT SHOULD BE HEEDXD.— We desire to call tbe attention of the afflicted to the merits of Roback's Blood Pills a purely vegetable cathartic, free from mercury and all mineral poisons, and undoubtedly the best remedy extant for the radical cure of nervous and sich headache, bilious disorders and all affections of the Liver and Blood. They are, as their name indicates, a
Blood Pill
they
search the blood for disease and strike at the very root, thereby effecting not temporary but permanent cures. As a purga* tive, they are all that can be desired, being mild and safe in their operation and unquestionably one of our most satisfactory Cathartic Pills, and should bo kept in every household, and, when taken in conjunction with Roback's Blood Purifier, are unequaled for curing Scrofula, Skin Disease, Old Sores, Salt Rheum, Dyspepsia, Erysipelas, Tumors, Eruptions, and all diseases arising from a disordered state of the system. Try these medicines and you will never regret it. Ask those who have used them, and they will tell you they are tbe best of medicines. mpll-dwlm
