The District-was Whig at the time Davis was premised the Speakership by tho Democracy of Congress, if he could make a successful run in his District. He went to work among Whig triecds, and through the argument of a little pride fo_ a Speaker from thsJSeventh District, EUC ceeded in cecuring his election, and the Speakership, which was giver him accord ing to promise.

This Congressional District is likely to become the great' thpater of political ac tion in tho State of Indiana. It is markel by Copperhead Democracy as the

to win, tor effect, at tbo Novemjr election. Major W. W. Carter, of Bowling Green, Clay county, was early placed in nomination by a Republican Uonvontion of the District, and is making a handsome canvass. Ho is able and eloquent, with a great, abundance of en ergy and spirit. Tho nomination was long delayed on the part of Democracy. They hacf a'pot man, holding in reserve until it was liaown what, might happen at the New York Convention. This pot Was Dan. W. Voorhee?, sometimes cal the tall Sycamore of the Wabash, and sometimes the Young Giant, of tho West This Young Giant was known to have as. pirationti for tbo Vico Presidency or something equivalent, at the hands of thn

Convention. He deserted Pendleton and rent over to Hendricks. This created reat dissatisfaction in the Sixth District ut partial a^ly in Vigo, Voorhees' own junty. Ic b'ecamo almost irreconcilable, ut the District Convention was held and 'an. W. Voorhees placed in nomination. belonged to the Democracy of the •ate to do this, and it must be done for ,ate effect. So strong still was the feelagainst Voorhee3 for his course in the ew York Convention, that Vigo, his vn county, gave a divided vote, sevon

Mr. Hanna, and seven for Voorhees. Every means in the power of Copper adism is to be used to secure the eiecin tho Sixth District. It is believed at thousands of dollars, from abroad, til be placed in the power of Voorhees, operate in the election—and all this effect on.the November election. This party spirit, and party pride. For, to 11 the real truth, neither Seymour nor lair is popular with the Democracy of jdiana- Certainly in the Terre Haute ction there is an undercurrent of sent! ent against both the men. This old district was a long time known as warm, old-fashioned Whig and Demo cratic political debating ground—always sharply and warmly contested son.eimes one and sometimes the other party predominating and carrying into Congress a representative to vote in accordance with the majority.
