SMITH'S ILLUSTRATED DICTIONARY OF THE BIBLE, AND

DEVOTIONAL

AND PRACTICAL FAMILY BIBLE.—We wore favored yesterday with a call from the Rov. Mr. Mitchell, who is now in our city for the purpose of canvassing it for the abovo works. And, after an examination of the fac simile prospectuses, which give a clear idea of what the works really are, we heartily commend them to tbo consideration of the intelligent public. Tho Dictionary is already well known in all literary circles and only needs to be known, in its present form, to the general reading public in order to create a desire to possess it. It has received the unqualified approbation of the most profound scholars and divines of all denominations ia our land. W« quote what tho clergy of our city unite in saying of it. "We know of no moro valuable help to the ordinary reader of the Bible than Dr. 6mith'a Biblo dictionary."— Signed by all the ministers now at home in the city. Tho Family Biblo poscosses many usoful and attractive features that deserve attention. And as Mr. proposes to canvass the city as rapidly as possible and as a Family Biblo it a thing no one has' need to purchase but once in a generation or two, we advise our friends to see this before purchasing elsnwhore. ..... of "cow in tho yard.'' But than thcro is a heap o' difference in cow& I don't consider any cow ill-mannered that walks into an open gate and goes to cropping tho luxuriant green grass on the lawn. She accepts tho invitation and no doubt regards it a* exceeding ill-mannered, if not bad usage, when she is pelted and drove out with brick bats. It ia the malicious, burglarious animal that I complain of. One that can take a common ^ate clear off its hinges if it don't yield to gentle manipulation, and goes toJmtting and goring the rose bushes and the arbor vitaes. The sooner that cow's bide is in the possession of Burnett & Ross the better for community. Whole neighborhoods have been dupciled of their beautiful gra?s plats and choice shrubbery by tho nocturnal visits of tbose wicked female bovines. Thero is no mistake but what a cow that will give down cheeriully and don't kick the bucket is a blessing and a comfort to the owner. Democracy have "i -.en, aud went,

and gone, and done it." The "ratification" egg over which they have so long been incubating brought forth to-day, and a desperately lame chicken it turned out to be. We have no desire to misreprepresent the facts in the case, but really, if, after three weeks of energetic blowing and drumming, our "unterrified" friends cannot get up a bettor mass meeting than to-day has witnessed, we advise them to sell out. Everything went wrong with the affair from the word go. The "reception" with which thedistingulshedspeakers were to have been greeted on their arrival fizzled, the excursion traina were a fizzle, and the procession which, after two hours of hard labor, they finally arranged, was the worst fizzle of all.

It had been intended that there should be a very imposing display in the way of flags, etc. A largo and small banner, fastened together, and suspended across Columbia street, below Third, comprised tho cntiro display in this direction. Tho saloons all had flags out, bearing tho names of Seymour & Blair, and they wero the only buildings decorated.—LaFayetie. Courier, 30//t. 1

They combine the proper

RohaeKx Blood Pills,

are the

safest and surest preventative against all billious derangements, thoroughly regulating the whole system and giving tono to the digestive organs. ^They are highly recommended as an invigorating tonic to mothers nursing, increasing the flow of milk, and for convalescents, to restore the prostration which always follows long-continued sickness they are unsurpassed.
