Lippmcott's for August has a clever paper on "Smoking,'' in which Parton's Atlantic article is neatly reviewed. In answer to thelatter's point., that smokiDg tends to keep its votaries from the society of women, the former boldly claims that the number of cultivated men is indisputably larger than the number of cultivated women, and that in general society the number of cultivated women is very small hence, as a rule, cultivated men do not go thore. A Young Lady Shot by Hor LoverSnlride of the Latter.

Thomas Merklein, of Meehanicsburgh, was employed in the Pennesylvania Railroad shops at Altoona, where he labored for a considerable time. He there mado the acquaintance of a young lady named Seiberl, to whom ho became devotedly attached, and finally the two wero bethrothed, but from cause Miss S. recently saw proper to break tho engagement. Merklein made repeated efforts since to obtain berconset to a union, but withoat avail. On Friday evening last he quit work as usual, but did not return next morning, Daring the forenoon (Saturday) he visited the residence of the Seibert iaraily, and obtained a private interview with Miss S. He again endeavored to gain her consent to marry him. She refused, at the same time stating her causo for so doing, whereupon Merklein drew a pistol, and pointing it to her heart, fired, at the same time declairing that she should not become tho wife of any one. Immediately after liring, he turned the pistol toward his own head and shot nimself, producing instant death. Fortunately Miss Seibert was not fatally wounded the bullet entered her arm near the shoulder. The tradgedy produced great excitement among the people of Altoona, where the parties

were well known. It (aid that Merk lein bad been intoxicated teveral days before he performed the deed that stamped him ft murderer and a suicide.
