THE RAILROAD EXCURSIONISTS.—We mentioned yesterday the passage through this city of an excursion train, making unusual fast time, and the expectation of the party to make the run from St. Louis to Columbus, 450 miles, inside of twelve hours. We learn the feat was accomplished in ten hours and forty-five minutes. In going west the run from Pittsburg to Chigago, four hundred and fiftyone miles, was made in twelve hours, which fact developed a rivalry among our own roads here, over which they returned, to beat that time from St Louis to Columbus. From yesterday's Indianapolis <Journal> we have the result of the trip:
The party started from St. Louis yesterday morning, and arrived in Terre Haute, a distance of one hundred and thirty-nine miles, in five hours and one minute. At Terre Haute engine No. 12, "Orion," was placed in front of the two Pennsylvania cars, in which the entire trip has been made, and with William Sherburne for engineer, and John

REVENUE MATTERS.—In
and thirty-one minutes actual running time. President McKeen and Superintendent Peddle came over as far as Bridgeport, where they got on the noon train west and returned to Terre Haute.
We are much gratified at the success of both the Terre Haute and Central roads in this feat of railroading, which will serve to show to these Eastern gentlemen and capitalists that the West is not a whit behind thorn in anything. When they come again we can promise them breakfast in St. Louis and supper in New York. The quick time and the pleasant trip is a gratifying evidence of the condition of the two roads, as well as the ability of the management. =====

Ryan came up to the group, and, after speaking to the General and passiBg tho usual salutations, wanted to know if tho General did not feel afraid in such a crowd as that? Tho General replied that he had spent four or live years fighting just such a set of fellows, and did not feel in the least alarmed.

others of our well kept Depot Dining Hall. Dinner over, engine No. 42 of the Central Road buckled on to the cars, with Amos Kellogg as engineer and Mr. Harry Dodd as conductor. Mr. President Smith and Superintendent Lunt joined the party, and the train moved out of the depot at twelve minutes past two o'clock, with the excitement as to time at about fever heat, leaving behind a crowd of a hundred or two railroad men, each with a watch in their hands, determined to stay there until their arrival at Columbus was announced. Mr. Scott had expressed himself completely surprised with the track and the time of the Terre Haute Road, and while the Central really did not expect to outdo it, the officers hoped to be able to sustain the reputation of their line. How handsomely they have done, it can be told when the fact is known that the running time over one hundred and eighty-eight miles was four hours, twelve minutes, and thirty seconds; the whole trip, including stoppages, occupying four hours and twentyseven minutes. The dispatch announcing the arrival at Columbus says everybody is enthusiastic over the result. The run from St. Louis to Columbus, four hundred and fifty-one miles, was made in ten hours and forty-five minutes, an average of forty miles an hour for the entire distance.

The proceedings, we learn from some of the most respectable Democrats present, were disorderly to an extent that humiliated and disgusted them. Considerable drunkenness was displayed, and one or two personal difficulties were °®ly prevented bv the interference of third parties. Some of tho delegates made public exhibitions of themselves upon the streets of our city not at nil creditable) and such as, under other circumstances, would have insured them quiet quarters in tho city lock-up. But the police kindly considered the occasion of the offense and
politics of the offenders, anil let them go freo.
A HORRIBLE double murder was committed at Mound City, Illinoii, on the 20th inst., by a man named Adamson, a citizen of New Albany, and formerly a soldier in the Sixty-Bixth Indiana regiment.
The victims of this awful tragedy were David Soutbwicfc and Asa Hodge, both residents of New Albany, and well known here, the former as a striker in one of the foundries, tho latter as a paifiter.
We have no particulars as to the incentives of Adamson to commit this terrible crime. He stabbed Southwick sev oral times while tho latter was asleep on a boat, and then knocked Hodges in the head with an axe, and threw him overboard.
All the parties, together with Southwick's wfie, were living or working on the flatboat. After the commission of the crime, Adamson made his escape in a skiff, threatening to kill Mrs. Southwick if she gave the alarm. No trace of the murderer has yet. boen gained.—New Albany Cammercial.
