It is said that, on application being mado to ANDY JOHNSON for pardons for a large number of Southern delegates to the Now York Democratic Convention, he curtly replied, "It is not necessary they will be mora influential in that Convention without pardons than with them." THE Brazil Miner gives an illustration of Democratic love for union soldiers which had a counterpart iu our Democratic county convention. As far as we know but two soldiers (unless Dr.

could be termed one) were soliciting a po sition on the Clay county ticket. Those two were JOHN LUCAS, who was for several months in the priBon-pen at Andersonville, and is a worthy young man, and 3. T' CROMWELL, who waBfor three years an excellent soldier, and is of unexceptionable character, both aspiring for the nomination for Sherifl. Mr. Lucas, seeing that he was about to be slaughter eii ''in tbo house of hisfriends," withdrew hia name before any ballot was had but Mr.CROMWEj.L suffered his name to go belore the convention, and did not receive one vote.

A Valuable Admission.

The

This is a valuable admission and will be likely to set the readers of that paper to thinking very seriously upon matters vrhicb mu3t nearly and vitally effect their interests. When the Journal a

readers see"that the Republican

party of Indiana has taken a debt of twelve millions complicated and made almost unmanageable by Democratic imeompeteaey and rascality, and so persevered in the determination to remove the ourdon. that to-day the entire indebtedness, outside of the School Fund, does not exceed throe millions,'' and when oa the other hand, they sea that a singlo session of a Democratic legislature in our neighboring Stato of Ohio has doubled the expenies of Legislation,

they will accept

these great home truths,aa conclusive proof that the howling of tha Democratic press about "Radical extravagance" is merely a party campaign cry baring no tangible foundation. "When they learn that the Democracy of Indiana through their fleeted and appointed officers have robbed the people, stolen the children's school money, forged certificates of State indeb* todness and in overy way and on every hand accomplished their utmost towards effecting the financial ruin of the State, and that Republican financiering has re« versed all this, they will hardly need to turn to Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York for similar illustrations. Tax unhappy Democracy are halting, not between two, but between two thousand opinions. For instance, they are not absolutely clear in their own minds which they will pay, the Five-twenty se curities in gold, in greenbacks, or refuse to pay them in anything, the last proposition being decidedly the most popular with the mass of the party in the South and "West. They are equally undecided whether they will follow up recent advances towards indorsing and embracing the colored conservative, or continue their ancient but Unprofitable occupation of cursing and damning "the nigger" for a century to come. They are halting between a "white man's government' and afr9$ njaa'g government, between elevating the colored Union soldiers to be sharers in those political privileges epjoyed by

FOBBEBT,

Wants lo Change the Subject. The debt of the State of Indiana is but aj drop in the bucket compared to the ehormous public debt of the United States, counted as it is by iillions.

This is not to bfc Wondered at. So disgraceful has been the conduct «f Democratic financial officers in this State that no member or organ of the party can contemplate the subject with equanimity. The credit and good name of the State were reduced to the lowest obb when the democratic thieving grip was loosed from the remnant of the children's school fund, and a Republican administration began the great work of restoring! the credit by honorably paying the debt of the State. From this subject, so eternally disgraceful to the Democracy, and so honorable to the Republican party, the Journal

turns in deeply intensified dis

gust, and utters its oft-repeated wail of "Republicahl extrivagancrf' jj» national affairs.

Beyond these beginnings nothing has been accomplished. Once scattered from school there are no re-organizations

In Chicago there are 200 boot-blacks and 500 news-boys. These boys'are all grouped in clans as instinctively as sheep in flocks, or fish in schools. There are thousands of sewing girls, bhop girls, waitresses, and the like in the city—of twice and thrice the age, and certainly of far superior intelligence—but I suppose there is not a single club, clan or society of any kind among them all!

It is worth ile to note, in passingJ the reason and the result of clubbing. Democratic Opposition to reconstruction is re •ponsible for the greater portion of our governmental expenditures since the Democratic rebellion was crushed. Correspondence T^aily Express.] BLOOMINGTON, INI., July 1, 1868. I wrote you last Monday giving an ac count of the address of Major Gordon and ®f the Baccalaureate sermon on Sab bath by Rov. Dr. Parsons, of Portland Kentucky.

Monday evening at 7J o'clock, the Sigma Chi Fraternity, was addressed by Mr. Charles Evans, of Springfield, Ohio Ho had no subject. The address was a floral basket of reminiscences. It abounded in beautiful isolations, but was destitute of cohesion. This address was followed by a Poem read bv one J. W Jackson, of Wilmington, Delaware. It was a satire on Impeachment, Alta el a1 Intolerance, Battles, Shows, Swinging Round the Circle, &c, and was as pungent as some of the satires of Horace. The hit at the transactions in relation to Alta Vela was an admirable piec8 of ridicule or irony in the way of exaggeration.— Alta Vela was transformed into one of the blessed isles—a fit abode for the Gods— but, O my Muse! shamefully converted into a pigeon roost.

The peroration was an apostrophe to our country, and was happy in concep' tion, felicitous in arrangement, beautiful in diction, and noble in sentiment, and was delivered with a feeling and pathos that secured for the speaker the profound est attention.

Lasteveing an address was delivered before the Alumni by Rev. Jos. Jenckes of Louisville, Kentucky. His theme was "Winds," but his was not a windy address. He began by a beautiful classical allusion to the sacks of winds delivered by King Menelaus to Ulysses, thence ad*, vanced to an inquiry into the origin, cause, philosophy anddisturbanc.es of the winds.

He concluded that. Western people do not study the winds enough—that they are precursors of "weather, foul or fair,' according to the direction whence they come, the strength with which they blow and the manner in which they blow.' These ideas were elaborated somewhat fully, but I have not time to pursue them further.

This address was followed with an address by Governor Conrad Baker on "True Manhood.'' His address was the gem of commencement week, but as it will be published by defection of the Board of Trustees, I will give it no further notice-

To-night a suppar will be given to the Alumni, and to-morrow the exhibition of the graduating class will take place, jlli

The Board of Trustees have elected George W. Hoss, Professor of the Theory and Practice of Teaching and English Literature have appropriated $3,000 for increase of tho library $1,250 for the purchase of chemical and philosophical apparatus $1,200 for re-seating the chapel and putting shutters to the touth and west sides of University building, and have directed the purchases and improvements to be made immediately. They have furthermore had a large Jbarometer and an aerometer placed out' aide the window in the north of the second itory of the east wing of the University building from which meteorological observations are taken three times a day a register thereof made in a record kept for that purpose, and a copy of such register sent to the Smitheonian Institute once per month.

A large marble sun-dial enclosed by a beautiful iron fence has been erected in the campus by direction ot the Board. All these last named scientiilc improvements weremade under the supervision of Frofessbj M^g^fbr
