M. Taine, the well 'krfo^ft' on English literature, was married not many days since, and iii church—in spite of his sarcastic remarks on marriages in general in his witty book, "Notes de Frederick Thomas Graindorge," where, after exposing the mercantile nature of marriages, he describes tho religious ceremony as imposing in the highest degree and strongly resembling the fifth act in "Rob« ert ie Diablo," only the latter, remarks M. Taine, has a more religious character

A singular story is told by a Western paper. A steamboat received a passenger at Burlington, Iowa, who proved to be sick and penniless. Efforts were made to have him taken into one of the hospitals along the river, but they would not receive him. He was therefore carried up and down the river for two or three weeks until he died, and then a gang was sent ashore one night at Drury's Landing, near Rock Island, to bury him. The farmers saw the operation, but suspected murder, and did not dare to interfere. The mystery has just been explained. ---<>---

Josh Billings on Bed-Bugs.

I never see eutij

9u'l|vbodj it tut what de

spised bed-bugs. They are the meanest ov awl crawling, creeping, hopping or biting animals.

Tbadassent tackle a man by daylite, but sneak in after dark and ch«w him while he is asleep.

1

A musketo will fite you in broad dalite at abort range, and give you a chance to nodr*t"hiB sides. The flea is-a game bug and will make a dash at you eveu in Broadway, but thebed-bngis a gaTrator who waits till you strip, and then picks out a mellow place to eat you. If I was ever in the habbit ov swaring, I would not hesitate to dam a bed-bug to his face.

Bed-bugs are uncommonly smart in one way-—one pair ov them will stock a hair mattress in to weeks with bugs enuff to lai a ctnall family a whole year.

It don't do enny good taw pray when bed-bugs are in season the only way. to get rid of them is to bile up tho whole bed in aquafortis and then heave it away and bny a new one.

Bed-bugs when tha have grown awl tha intend to, are about the size ov a blue jay1* eye, and hav a brown complection, when they start out to garrote, tha are as fiat as a greeae spot but when the get through garrottisg, they are swelled up like a blister. it takes three days to get the swelling out ov them.

If bed-bufcS have enny destiny to fill it must be thar stummucks, but it seems to me that tha must have been mado by aokaident, just as slivers are tew stick into somebody.

If tha Wus got up for some wire purpose tha must have taken the wrong track, for tha kant be onny wisdum in chawing a man awl night long and raising a family besides to follow the samo trade-

If there Is tome wisdum in awl this, I hope the bugs will chaw them folks who can see it, and let me bo, because I am one of tbe hereticks.
