WHEAT.—Mr. D. C. Stunkard, of the Buntia House, has laid on our table set' eral sample heads of thr^e different varieties of wheat gathered by him during a drive this country yesterday. COUNTY TREASURER, Snepherd, en Thursday drew from the State Treasury this county's portion of the School Fund, amounting to $21,644 39. He had previ. ou?ly paid into the Treasury the State taxes due from this county, amounting to $77,550 71, including $24,771 84 on account of sohool tax. ST. LOUIS, VANDALIA AND TERSE HAUTE R. R.—The Marshall Messenger was in error last week in stating that "the surveyors on the different routes have handed in their reports to headquarters and the company has decided to build ofrfreekoaed the Rice line. No such thing has transpired. ..

Wo are reliably informed that none of tho surveys are yet completed, and that the line of location will not be announceduntil they are all finished. The object of the company is to get the best and cheapest line between Terre Haute and St. Louis and this, of course, cannot be determined without full and accurate estimates, and a careful comparison of the different lines.

The friends of the Darwin line boast that they have much better and cheaper line than ours and are quite sanguine that they will get the road. The Marshall people admit this, but claim thmt local efforts, together with the directness of that route will more than compensate for the difference in construction. A lively competition exists between the people on the two proposed rootW

WALT** WA*WK*,or A feUow giving that name, was sent to jail yeaterday by the Mayor under bonds of $1,000, for obtaining goods under false pretenses. On Thursday evening he visited Erlanger'e clothing store and selected about $30 worth of clothing. He stated he had a large drove of cattle just across the river to bring in next morning—hadn't suffident money to pay for the clothing, "but would leave a draft on McKeen & Minsball's Bank for 1,150, payable to Walter Warwick and signed by Wm, Alexander, as security ftr payment. He was allowed to take the clothing. Yesterday morning wheh the B«nk opened the draft was found worthless, and a few hoars after

Warwick was arrested. He is a middle aged man of good appearance, and we INTO endeavored to play die same game at other houses. vf.a-4

R*v. BLACKTOBD CONDIT, of this city^ delivered at Orawfordsville, on Tuesday last, the annual addrees before the Associated Allummi of Wabash College. The theme he selected for his address was ••The Growing Distaste for Humor." A correspondent of tfae lndianapolis

Journal

says it was very racy and piquant dis course on the great tendency of the present age to cast aside the humor of those rare men, Ben. Johnson, Lamb, Hood and others of the same class in the wild and precipitate rush of the, age for practical facts. Humor, the spice of human, ex. istence, which has been so well defined as "thought at play," haB come to be trampled upon, spurned and disregarded because wis eminently practical, matter-of-fact age has come to regard it as something too lpw for its notice. The man who can leave home in the morning in a grumbling mood and return in the evening froijn his business in, even, a Worse state, should not be allowed to exercise the privilege of a ,.free agent. For such there should "be" a Bofise of correction, where they could be taught to laugh. The present tendency to caitftig asidr"Mother

Goose's Melodies," '"Robinson Crusoe/' and other books of a similar character, which have been the very life of the child* reny and placing-in -their stead children's histories of kings, and the like, came in for a very fair share of his attention. The whole address was listened to'wfth groat pleasure and the closest attention, and Sir Condit received the unanimous thanks Of the'AIutohTforftspT^ntatiolf

There were several State prosecutions before Dennehie during the Fair. Wbeth. er Mr. Holden ajjfjfeiffed or not, I do not know.
