Professor Tyndali concludes his memoir of Faraday with the sentence Tou might not credit me were to tell, you bow lightly I value the honor of being Faraday's successor compared with honor of having been Faraday's friend. His friendship was energy and inspiration his mantle is a Jrarden almost too heavy to be borne."

The famous author of the Schonberg Cotta Family manages to put ideas ana sentiments into the mouth of her speakers which af good for many of us, and worth remembering. As for instance, in her last book the remark is made "la the language of meni many lives are said to be wasted on the battle-field. I am not sure, but in the language of angels, lives are said to be wasted in easy and luzuri* ous homes.

Yeu remarked that some people are very squeamish about the manner Of a clergyman in preaching, but yoil then added, 'Supposing one is hearing a will read, expecting to receive a legacy, would you employ the time In orltwlsine the lawyer's manner while reading it? No you would give all your interest to ascertain if anything were left to yourself, and how much. Let that, then, be the Tray in which you listen to the Gospel.'^

The town ofSatnarcand, which has recently fallen into the hands of the Russians, has long ceased to be the residence of great rulers like Tamerlane, and the celebrated High School of the Mohammedan world. In the Middle Ages it had some 160,000 inhabitant*, and its fame reached the remotst countries. Large literary treasures, it is said are still to be found there: but otherwise its glory has departed. It Is now a town of about 10, 000 inhabitants, belonging to the Khan? ate of Bokhara. ..

Sawing wood on tke bottom of a pond, thirty-five feet below the surface, is rathera novel feat, whioh was performed in WoonBocket. A professional dtver mado a through and successful examination thirty feet below the surface of an out of order mill dam, and during one of them sawed off a stick of timber to enter tbe gateway. This examination divulged the difficulty. The gate and granite walls were found in perfect condition, the only trouble being that the iron frame of the gate had become so rusted as to cause the gate to slide hard. -1
