COL. R. W- THOMPSON made two speeches at New Albany last Friday, one in tho aftornoon and one in the evening. The
Commercial
of the 30th says
Thospoech of Col. R. W. Thompson last night was one of the ablest of his lifo. It was a masterpiece of solid argument and burning eloquenco. It is worthy to be printed as a campaign document for general circulation among the people. Never was a speech delivered in this city received with mora hearty, more rapturous applause.
The Hall was literally packed full of people—dress circle, parquetto, and galleries being crowded. Hundreds of tho fairest ladies of the city were in attendance, and quite as enthusiastic in their applause of the eloquent words of the speaker as any of tho voting sex.
Col. Thompson Las over beeu a favorite with our people, but his speech last night added largely to tho number of his admirers here.
ODD FELLOWS' FESTIVAL.—The Odd Fellows will hold a Strawberry Fostival on Friday evening next, the Oth of June, at Dowling Hall, tho proceed? to be applied to furnishing their new Hall now being fitted up on Third street. A committee of ladies connected with tho Order will wait upon the public for donations of cash, cakes, cream, berries, or whatever the donor may have to contribute. Our people have always responded liberally on such occasions, especially when for charitable purpose#, ana the mission of Odd Fellowship being benevolence and charity, wo bespeak for them a liberal response to tho call. To the Odd Fellows is this community indebted for the establishment of tho benevolent Society for the benefit of tho poor. In the Fall of the year 185" they hold a festival, gotten up under their management, by which a large sum of money was raised, which they handed over to a committee of citizens outside of the Order, to bo by them distributed to the poor of the city. The Benevolent Society was organized at that time and has been in operation ever sitico. This i= the Grit time since the organization of the Order in this city that they have come before the public asking anything for their benefit. They have been buying and fitting up a Hall at a heavy expense for their means, and aSk a liberal rosponso from tho public in the entertainment' offered on next Friday evening at Dowling Hall. 4

Judy is in the suds, the second girl in the sulks, because it is her day to do the work, and madame is making the pastry, but an imperative Ting at the door-bell shakes her out of her equanimity, and hastily wiping her bands and answering the door'herself, she finds a peddler, or a man who wants to buy old clothes, or a gentlemanly-looking person who thrusts a small packet into her hands and hurries off, with the announcement that it will be called for next day.
