THERE
is a grest deal of truth ig the
remark of a metropolitan colemporary that all respectable people make it a point to show tb^ir disgust for such moral exhibitions as the
Was to have been, but at the same time the first they look for in the daily press is a report of the affair. Every decont person bewails it as an indication of a very low state of morals, but at the same time he knows how to appreciate thv excellence of the daily journal that gives the moat complete account of it.
Wb
heartily agree with the Albany
Evening Journal, whose opinions on all subjects are to be respected, that the Chicago Journal is one of the best Republican newspapers in the North-west.
Always true and loyal, it preserves a happy medium between destructive ultra* ism on the one hand and false conservat ism on the other. Since the inexplicable defection of the Chicago Tribune, it is the leading organ of a vast body of K®publicans in Illinois, Iowa and Basterii Missouri.
Does
the Express agree with the Chi
cago Tribune, and the other great organs of tho Radical party, that the Chicago platform demands the payment of tbje government bonds in gold.—Journal.
The Ex

party would gladly get rid of its
bloody and criminal record if it could, mado in four years of relentloss and savage sways, by casting it upon the shoulders of the Democracy.—Journal.
No sir. Tho Republican* party glories in its record as the grandest and proimost over mado by any party in any a^e or in any country. No doubt tho Jotiarval really thinks it was "criminal" |to suppress the robollion which its own pacty commoncod and prosecuted for sevei monSji^ during tho administration of "tpe saintlyu'Sago of Wheatland." No doubt tho Journ a I holds to tho old Domocrafcic doctrine uf State sovereignty and find no more authority in the Constitu., tion for coercing rebels than could Ja%$ES

All this is sound Dei

tlm Journal is not satisfied with that tloment because Democrats and Dei cratio principles were subjugated and feated. The Republican party has So sire to cast anything "upon the shoul( of the Democracy,'' for their self assui load of infamy is greater than any paity can bogr and will cry to Heaven for vengeance so long as the worldjs cursed ^th a remnant of thut organization.

We learn from the Indianapolis Jcj rial that the newly elected Grand ter, Mr. Rio?, on Thursday, appointedjthe following, which completes the roster of officers:
George B. Engle, Grand Chaplain, Wm. JJ. Hollingaworth, Senior Dead W. H. Smith, Junior Deacon. Isaac M. Stackhouse, Grand Lecti|rer.
A.
Foote, Grand Marshal.
Frederick Hauisen, Grand Tyler. The Lodgo was engaged during th^entiro day with the Grand Hall busines.— The report of the Trustees was commuted tea special committeo, and the report of this committee was made the special older for tho afternoon sesgion.
Tho Trustees say that they had not sufficient funds at command to enter lipon any practicablS plan of improvement^
Tho special committee reported that the Trustees neglected tho duty they frere called upon to perform, and entered into plans and calculations which they jrere not aut^oriy.ed to do that the/ proposed a new building instead of the imptfovemeot and remodeling of the present flail.
Tho special committee stated that unless tho repairs were mado at once the pall will be untenable by next year. II recommends the closing up of the portico^ the raising of the floors, and the addition of a story, making elegant storerooms, a capacious public hall, and convenient and large Lodge rooms. "This may be done by calling lit the loans of the Lodge and selling the ioath end of the lot to within thirty feet of the rear of the Hall.

laiFsesdMh oF"the Gelm-al Assembly of the State of New York, a member of the House, Mr. GLENN, made some very severe charges against certain other members, involving accusations of bribery in the matter of the Erie Railroad bill.— This effort ltf^te member elicitedthe utcaopt excitement, and Guupi was (bullied and worried up to such a degree that, not being able to stand up against the combination formed by the parties interested in preventing an examination into their derelictione, he was compelled to resign his position. The New York law in relation to bribery is so framed that it prevents the teoepfiodj of evidence from the person to whom the bribe is offered, as well as from him that tenders it, so that the rWull'really is, to shuj out all testi mony. Mr. GLENN was unable to sus tain his allegations by direct evidence, but, believing himself to be justified in h» declarations, although he could not prove them, he set himself at work te collect evidence, and seems to have obtained enough to justify a grand jury in finding a bill of indictment against the person who offered a bribe Jo Mr. GLENN himself.
The presentment has been accompanied with others, thl teontents of which are notyetmadepublic, but which it is believed concern the interests ol some other members of the Legislature whose susceptibility to pecuniary arguments as to how their votes should be cast has caused them to yield to inducements of an improper nature. It iitobe hoped that the efforts of Mr. GLENN will '.be successful. The character of the last Legislature of New York

diana believe that the "Chicago platform demands'' just what our State platform asserts, to-wit: that the public debt having been made necessary by. the Democratic robolJion "should be honestly paid and all the bonds issued therefor should ho paid in legal tenders, commonly called grconbnclcs, cxcopt whore, by their express torms, they provide otherwise and paid in such quantities as will make tie circulation commensurate with the com mercial wants of the country, and io to avoid too gTeat inflation of currency, and an increaso in the price of golc|'»
#o infamous that in bad reputa
tion it exceeded .any body of that charac* ter which has ever been convened in the United States. The quarrel between Dhet* and Vankerbilt was one which it is not believed was settled according to justice, but merely in reference to the compensation paid for votes. Both parties "bled" plentifully, but the New York and Erie Railroad men seem to have had the most riroriey to spend. At least such is the legitimate inference, as they succeeded in getting the passage of laws which suited them, not because the "set tlement" on that platform was such as the interests of the Commonwealth of Now York required, but because the "arrangements" to obtain the passage of such laws were the most perfect.

The nominations will be made by delegate convention, pursuant to the call published heretofore. It is therefore expected that the townships will select their dele gates for that purpose, the same as if this call for a Mass Convention had not been issued.

Progress of the Union Pacific Railroad. A brief dispatch a few days since informed the public that "Mile Post No. 600," had been reached by the track-lay-ers, and that the cars were running to that point. This makes six hundred miles of rail laid beyond Omaha, on the great highway across the Continent. The distance has been accomplished by the energetic managers of the road within two years. Three hundred additional miles are now in progress of construction, and by the first of November next will be finished and in working trim, the material being now on the ground, and the grading rapidly approaching completion. Ten thousand tons of iron lately purchased, will be delivered during the present season, and we should not be surprised if five hundred, instead of three hundred, additional miles of track would be finished before the year closes, which would bring the the road to the Great Salt Lake region. This, however, must depend, to a large extent, upon the sale of the mortgage bonds, which, should they meet with as much favor as they did in the last year, will undoubtedly insure the the completion of the road to Great Salt Lake during the present year. It is now believed by those having the enterprise in charge, that the whole line of road can be opened for traffic by the end of 1869, instead of 1875, the time fixed by the Government in its grant. The bonds hitherto have found ready sale at par, and in a short time it is firmly believed that they will command a premium, as the principal and interest, are both
payable in gold. =====
