NOAMOUKI of specious pretense
pecial pleading and can avert from the
heads of the seven Republican Senator*, who betrayed their trust by voting for the acquittal of ASDBEW JOHXSOW, the terrible indignation of an outraged neo' pie. I 'rbey have lent their servicos and their votes to su-t tin the moBt corrupt man that has htldpower ia modern timet,
They have given new strength to latent rebellion. Th«y havo given new license to the criminal in tbe White House to impede law, set the Sonats itself at defiance ard usurp tyranical power.
They have increased the perils of South em Unionista a thousand fold, and opened the fljod-gates of crime by their own warrant,
Thoy have stultified their own record written themselves down as heavy brained men who cannot see the truth they havo themselves a?serted, or as bad men who havo been fiiithleBB to their trusts.
Thoy, and they alone, have given war rant to keop the nation in a state of ruinous excitement, and to palsy every energy of the people.
For these feurful responslbilties they are answerable to the country and to the World, and in spite of the nonsensical and ridiculous pleadings which their apologists set up, tbe wrath of the people will follow them and *miu them with the lightning' of their contempt, and pursue them with the thundor-bolts of their execration There is no punishment so terrible as the wrath of an outraged people. These men have earned it and need sot complain that they receive it. It may be a whole* some medicine for their moral natures a Warning against further acts in the same direction.
The Vexed Question in ENGLAND. The taoatinij of the high dignitaries of the English Church, held in London a few days ago, proved what interest tho roguJar clorgy ia England feci in the impor tant subject of the unioh'of Church and State ia Iroluud. Tho principle that the Church mustsuppsrt itself, being once established in that part cf the kingdom the chances of an-invasion of tho ancient perquinitos of English churchmen assumes importance Precedent must be carefully guarded from invasion, especially in Great Britain, where precedent is supremo and of great power. The enoouragement of the English prelates has given confidence to the Irish churchmen, who, fearing the blow menaced against them, have petitioned the Queen to relieve them of danger. Her Majesty might throw herself into this controversy with all the weight of the Boyal prerogative, and perhaps postpone the impending revolution. But if she were to do so, it would be at tshe expense of her popularity, and with certainty that Bhe would earn the ill-w^ll of the majority in the House of Commons, and of a respectable minority, at least,'in the House of Lords. Sbe would probably produce no effect upon the party, whibh is bent upon reform, and if the bill for the Disestablishment of the Irish Chareh is passed, she wonid not dare to veto|it. In fact, tho Royal veto not having befen used in England for one hundred atd fifty years, at least, may be considered obsoleto. The Queen could accomplish nothing by revolving to stand in tho way of progress, and she might, by opposition, complicate the affair rather than improve the bUuatioQ eha baa, therefore, to die representation of the Irish ehurohmen returned a vague and genorel answer .iThev want her to promise that sbo will interfere to preserve to them their titties and continue them in thoir benefices, wrung from a people who are not in sympathy with the doctrines which thiy teach. Tho Queen has listened to what they have have had to say, and she has avoided dednito reply, Tho effort to ehgttgo her to net in opposition to the Parlistoent hu», therefore, been a failure She avoids any direct collision with the muj.rity. The Irish Church question must ihcreii.ro stand or fall upon its own merits,'and substantially the liberal party hns triumphed by the adoption of the policy ceieruiiued upon by tho Quoon,

IKDIAKAP.)LI8, May 21, 1888.
Notwithstanding Jhe Chicago Convention cailed away a large number of our "men about town", tto sun continues to riss and fet as if nothing had happenedt busines is lively, and people seem to be as deeply interested in the price of wheat and the prospect, of the corn crop, as in President-making and impeachment. Del gatM to tbe Convention, mere spectators and outside-presure people, left, and passed through tbe city, on every train from Thursday of last week until Wednesday morning of this, when travel had visibly subsided.
The Indiana delegation-!*—full, and made up of real, live representative aeo* Tbey will exercise, ss Indiana men have, in tbe past three or four National Conventions, a pctsat and generally acknowledged influence. Settlement WITH COUNTY
TBSASUREBB-
County Treasurers are coming up and settling promptly with the State authori-
ties, and consequently business is mere than lively In tho offices of the Auditor and Treasurer of State. The reports show that the taxes of 1867, although heavy in every county, have been paid up as WfU^-as ever before. The average de» linquency will not exceed fifteen per cent, of the layiad*e and a good part of that will be paid before the October settlement. There are some very suggestive facts and figures in relation to tbe rate of taxation in the several counties that will get attention in another letter.
THX ODD FELLOWS.
Tho meeting of the Grand Lodge 0. O.F. w^m exceedingly well attended The O&er is represented to be in a healthy and prosperous condition, as it deserves to be. It is certanly doing a noble work when it distributes for relief, and charitable purport*,'over twenty thousand dollars in one year. 1" MBLANCHOLY LEVITY
When it became known, on Saturday last, that the President was acquitted by the vote on the 11th article, the White JloyMn £148, and their Demooratic advisers and overseers, determined at once to celebrate something, Accordingly when night came a few solemn guns were fired, If RabjgHjr Mooting crowd assembled at Waihington H*ll, and scattering speeches were made in tbe effort to glorify Jobnsou, and applaud men who are making treason as respoctafele as possible. Men who, during the war, bad no regrets for a Union defeat, and no cheers for a Union victory, oh this occasion somehow found it convenient to become really jolly, Many of the "White Boys in Blue" if thoy had their eyes and ears open, doubtless saw and heard some strange sights and noises—in short, found themeelves In remarkable set of men. If they find the situation agreeable they rati stand most anything.
A 8AJTD O* GYPSIES."
A roving band of gypsies, which has been encamped for some time past near tho city, yesterday took up the line of ma$h and departed. The procenion of dilapidated bipeds and quadrupeds, crazy. looking people.and vehicles, was a strange spectacle as it moved slowly through the streets. They have been a great annoy, ance, a positive nuisance, since they first made their appearauce. Their ostensible occupation is fortune-telling, palmistry, astrology and the like. It is safe to conjecture, however that some of the recant burglaries, robberies, and petty stealing is the result of their maneuvers. •3 £UTCHS«»' pic-HIC.^
The Butchers association, a large and well-organised body of stalwart, healthy looking men, had a pic-nic in a grove •outh of the city yesterday. Before pro tiitding to the ground selected for tbe days recreation, the members of the association, on horseback, preceded by band of music, marched through Borne of the pfineipaiatreets. The men were in full dress, with the exception of coats, the rules of the association requiring them to go in their shirt sleeves, as if they wero at their accustomed work, and each had blue or crimson scarf, which gave the turroqut very pretty appearance. Butch er-shops during the day were kept olosed and the man who had neglected to send up his little two or threo pounds of meat for dinner had to go without. It was sad to think in spite of the beautiful display —and the pensive countenances of many spectators, doubtless heads of large and rapidly increasing families, indicated that they were musing upon the same subject it was sad to reflect, in spite of the exhilerating strains of music, and tho pleasantly sedate and^measured stepping of the horses—that baef is tw enty-flve cents a pound.

THE school trustees of Paoli have ask ed the Town Board tor $10,000 worth of bonds to tjuild a seminary with.
portion of the wholesale houses of Evansville report aggregate sales for March amounting to $668,108.
THE United States Circuit and District Courts adjourned Tuesday morning hither unceremoniously, after disposing of a few minor matters, until next Monday. It is said that the absence and lethargy of attorneys may have had something to do with the matter.
WE learn from the Madison Courier that General W. M'Kee Dunn, for sever-, al years a member of Congress from the Madison District (the Third) of this State and during a portion of tbe war Jndge Advocate for the Department of Missouri is quite sick at Atlanta, Georgia.
THE Laporte SereUd says that a man named John Kline killed a Mr. HenrLayman near the Village of Kingsbury, last week, by striking him with a "whiiBetrte." The quarrel grew out of business disagreements. Kline was discharged upon his preliminary examination before a justice. Self-defence, as usual, was the motive of the homieide.. we suppose.
THE Supreme Judges will not meat again until Friday. The regular May term begins next Tuesday.
JOHN WILLIAMS, a well-known citizen, of New Albany, attempted to "shuffle off this mortal coil" on Friday night by hanging himself. He remained suspended until bis tongue lolled out an inch or two, when he was discovered and cut down, and the Coroner thus cheated out of a five dollar fee. .. 1
WE learn from the Evansville Journal that on Monday night, at a late hour, a band of five outlaws, fully armed, went to the bouse of a Mr. Morris, in Union Township, and demanded admission Being refused admittance, they buret down the door, and took from his bed a young man named Dorsner, and carried him off in his night clothes.
Sheriff Miller being informed of the outrage, started in pursuit of the scoundrels, but no trace of them could be discovered, and the fate of the young man is involved in mystery.
Tbe Tribune on "The Yerdict." Tbe vote exhibits at least a remarkably nice adjustment of means to ends. Nine~ tern were needed to acquit in a vote of fifty-four and the exact number required was bad. The coincidence ia as striking as that related by Sam Weller of his father's upsetting a load of voters on their way to election.
Of course, nobody imagines that such men as Messrs Fessenden, Grimes, Trumbull and Van JWinkle, voted otherwise than they believed just. Warped by personal antipathy or prejudice their Judgments may have been—we think they were—but thoy are above tbe suspicion of yielding to any more sordid temptation Mr. Van Winkle did not determine on which side to cast his vote until two days before the verdict.
Of Messrs. Fessenden, Grimes, and Trumbull, wo think the Republican party have great reason to complain. ITot that they voted as they did—we concede the right and tbe duty of each Senator to vote (howovit mistakenly) as be saw fit. But tnese Senators understood .the case at an early day and it seems to us the least that they could fairly have done was to ttdvisu their Republican brethren that tbey should probably feel constrained to vote for acquittal. Yet the leading Copperheads of Chicago were fully apprised that Senator Trumbull would vote to ao quit long before his Republican brethren representing Illinois in the House were aware of it. So of tbe others. Of Mr. Fowler, wc have already slated that he was an early and apparently oar nest advocate of Impeachment—that he fuund fault with the failure of the House to impeach in December—that, on the 10th of January last, at a meeting of the Republican Committed at Senator Morgan's, he saw fit, without being in any manner incited to do so, to declars that there was little use in Republican effort so long as Andrew Johnson was allowed to remain in the White House, and that the blood ot loyal men in tbe South, daily slain by implacable Rebels, would rest on the souls of those Members of Congress who should persist in obstructing the impeachment and. removal of said Johnson, There may be some way of reconciling this speech with honesty in tho vote given by Mr. Fowler on Saturday, but it has not occurred nor been suggested to us Mr. Fowler, too, kept his purpose to vote as he did from the knowledge of Repub. licans so long as he could.
Of Mr. Henderson, we forbear to speak for the present. Mr. Ross succeeded in deceiving even his colleague to the last. Ho attended a meeting of tbe earnest supporters of Impeachment at that colleague's house the evening before the verdict, and was apparently one of them. He has repeatedly declared that he should vote Guilty on the eleventh and several other articles. Yet Gen. Thomas Ewing, jr., we learn, knew, days ago, that he would vote not guilty if it should be necessary. No doubt, Mr Ross has an explanation of his course ready and we are sure his most partial friend will agree with us that it is badly needed.
